Sometimes I played tag with my friends in the garden.
There were many beautiful butterflies in the garden. My friends often
chased them, or ran after them but we did not harm them.
There were also all kinds of insects, big and small. My aunt explained that
some insects were harmful and some were not. She got rid of the harmful ones with
some soap water and some insect repellent.

The Bee
Bees live in a house that is called a hive. There are three kinds of bees:
workers, drones, and queens. Only one queen bee can live in each hive. If she is
lost or dead, the other bees will stop their work.
Bees are very wise and busy little creatures. They all join together to build
cells of wax for their honey. Each bee takes its proper place, and does its own work.
Some go out and gather honey from the flowers; others stay at home and work
inside the hive.
The cells which they build, are all of one shape and size, and no room is
left between them. The cells are not round, but have six sides.
Did you ever look into a glass hive to see the bees while at work? It is
pleasant to see how busy they always are. But the drones do not work. Before
winter comes, all the drones are driven from the hive so that they may not eat the
honey which they did not gather.
It is not quite safe for children to handle bees. They have sharp stings
that they use in their defense.

Mom’s Chicken Curry

Ingredients

Serves: 6

1 chicken, about 1.5kg, cut into 6 pieces

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 large onions, finely chopped
3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
2 tablespoons curry powder or paste
500ml chicken stock
1 tablespoon tomato purée
1/2 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons yoghurt
salt and freshly ground black pepper
chopped fresh coriander to garnish

Method

Prep:20min › Cook:45min › Ready in:1hr5min

Remove the skin from the chicken joints, if preferred, and season them with
salt and pepper.
Heat the oil in a deep frying pan or flameproof casserole. Add the chicken and
brown it on all sides for 6–8 minutes over a medium heat. Remove and set
aside on a plate.
Cook the onions in the pan for 5 minutes until golden brown, stirring regularly. Add
the garlic and curry powder or paste and cook, stirring, for 1 minute.
Add the stock, tomato purée, sugar and seasoning. Mix well and add the chicken.
Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 45 minutes or
until tender, turning the chicken pieces halfway through cooking.
Remove the chicken to a serving dish using a draining spoon. Heat the sauce
