The Mediterranean City Portraits Project, initiated by the Izmir Mediterranean Academy, aims to
consider the historical port cities of the Mediterranean from a comparative perspective.
The project dwells on the historical port cities of the Mediterranean in their own pecularities and
from a comparative perspective, focusing on their socio-economic structures, their transformations
through history and their relations with each other. The project was launched with an international
workshop in 2016, which focused on Salonica and Izmir. The idea of an exhibition that emerged from
this workshop was realized with the opening on 4 October 2019 of the “Oh My Sister Selanico Izmir
Exhibition” at the Historical Gas Factory Exhibition Gallery.* The topic of this panel discussion will be
the transformations that Selanico and Izmir went through in the nineteenth century.
The panel will be chaired by Dr. Dilek Akyalçın Kaya. The panel participants and the topics are as
follows:
*Ah Kardeşim Selanik İzmir Sergisi, 30 Kasım 2019 tarihine kadar Tarihi Havagazı Fabrikası Sergi Galerisi’nde gezilebilir.
*Oh My Sister Salonica-Izmir Exhibition will be open to public viewing between 4 October and 30 November 2019 at the His-
toric Gas Factory Exhibition Gallery.
MEDITERRANEAN URBAN PORTRAITS
Günümüzün İzmir’i ve Selanik’i, ziyaretçilerine parçalanmış bir resim sunar. Geleneksel ticari
Modern-day Smyrna and Thessaloniki present a fragmented picture to the visitor. Moving from the
traditional commercial center to the upper city, and from there to “Pounta” or the “Campagnes”–
embarking on a journey through time and space– one discovers within the discontinuity of the urban
space the absence of their last historical nucleus; there is a void at the heart of the city, redolent of
departure, absence and loss… It is only the waterfront and the creation of a new ‘Quais’ or ‘para-
lia’ which unifies and re-creates, through the element of water, the identity of these ex-cosmopolitan

Mediterranean port-cities, projecting their image like a palimpsest just discernible beneath the mo-
dern ‘megapolis’, forever indelible, for ever magical.
Only the seafront, this archetypal image of both Smyrna and Thessaloniki, continued to provide the
same vista of the sea, while the harmonious balance between the sea and the built environment rema-
ins the eternal symbol in the cities’ iconography.
Bizans kulesi, XVI. Yüzyılda
Bizans surlarına eklenen Osmanlı surlarına entegre edilmiş ve 1870-73 yıllarında deniz surları
ile birlikte yıkılışına kadar bozulmadan varlığını korumuştur.
Using rare photographic material, this presentation demonstrates how a Roman axis and a Byzantine
edifice survived all through Ottoman Thessaloniki till the late 19th and the early 20th centuries respe-
ctively. First it focuses on the Ottoman Bank Street which followed up an important late Roman axis
that connected the Constantine port of the 4th century with what was probably the administrative
centre of the city at that time. The Yilan Mermer stele that survives today is evident to the existence of
this street that was prominent till the Hebrard Plan had it vanished after the Great Fire of 1917. Second-
ly it focuses on the White Tower, Ottoman symbol of today’s city, which was believed to have replaced
a pre-existing Byzantine tower on the same site. Photos and maps show that this was not the case; the
Byzantine tower had been rather incorporated into the Ottoman fortification added to the Byzantine
walls in early 16th century and survived intact till its demolition along the sea walls in 1870-73.
