Course Title Interactive English 1
Course Credit Units (hrs/wk 7 3 units, 3 hours per week

Course Description This one-semester course equips students with skills for interacting with English speakers in their community and
beyond. These will be for the most part, taught using CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) utilizing software
from DynEd International. This course will not only foster the development of a functional command of spoken and
written English; this course also equips the students the necessary skills to be able to cope with their academic tasks.
Additional emphasis is placed on the development of the basic reading skills, the study and the use of the library, the
recognition and use of course and clear language structure in the sentence, paragraph, and longer forms of discourse
namely: narration, exposition, description and argumentation.

Course Objectives At the end of the course, the student must be able to:

1) read and approach critically various types of reading materials;


2) write clear, unified, and coherent paragraphs in the different modes of paragraph development;
3) recognize the significance of reading, writing, and speaking in English for personal, academic and
professional development;
4) develop an awareness of social issues that exist in the community;
5) demonstrate a functional level of English proficiency developed through CALL;
6) relate their learning experiences in this course to personal, academic, and professional improvement;
7) relate their learning experiences in this course to the mission and vision of the MSU System and
particularly to the ideals of cultural pluralism, humanism, nationalism, and to the achievement of peace.

Specific Objectives: At the end of the course, the student must be able to:

Reading, Grammar, and Study Skills

1.read reading texts in different fields, determine the organizational structure, interpret, make inferences and
predictions, draw conclusions and make critical reactions;
2. find and interpret information on maps, indexes, charts, tables, graphs, and similar materials;
3. apply strategies to comprehend specialized vocabulary used in reading texts
4. use correctly the different grammatical structures used in realizing different communicative functions;
5. develop study and basic research skills.

Writing

1. discuss and apply the principles of paragraph writing;


2. write paragraphs that narrate, describe, and expound in order to express their understanding, opinions, and
reactions to various issues that exist in the community and in the region as a whole;

Speaking/Listening

1. distinguish the differences between American and British English and Philippine English;
2. distinguish and produce the sounds of English accurately;
3. develop and confidence in speaking in English.
4. listen for the main ideas or for specific information in a presentation.
5. follow verbal instructions involving conditions and sequences.
6. develop initiative and confidence in asking questions, in expressing and defending their opinions, and
participating in all learning activities;
7. develop an openness to the opinions of others and toward feedback about themselves and their
performance.
