COIL SPRING SUSPENSION SYSTEM REPORT
1. INTRODUCTION:
A coil spring is a mechanical device which is typically used to store energy and
subsequently release it, to absorb shock, or to maintain a force between contacting surfaces.
They are made of an elastic material formed into the shape of a helix which returns to its
natural length when unloaded.
Under tension or compression, the material (wire) of a coil spring undergoes torsion. The
spring characteristics therefore depend on the shear modulus, not Young's Modulus.

2. MODELLING:
 This report has Modelling, Analysis and Simulation of Coil spring suspension system.
 Modeling of Coil spring suspension system is done in CATIA (Computer Aided Three-
Dimensional Interactive Application) by two dimensions (i.e. Sketcher workbench and
3D work bench) and is imported to ANSYS workbench.

Fig 1. Coil spring model

 Common commands used in Sketcher workbench include Line, Constraints, circle,

Arc, Profile, Fillet, Constraint Dialogue box, etc. Pad, pocket, hole, Shaft, Rib, 3D
Fillet are the operations performed in CATIA 3D Workbench (Part Design).
 Each and every component assembled in Assembly Workbench by using Contact,
Coincidence, Fix and Offset constrains.
 The command “C: HELIX” is used to get the helical coil in the spring.
 Above image has been modeled but the following model is used in Ansys for
Simulation and Analysis using Ansys Software. For using the model in Ansys the
CAT product file is converted to “igs” file and then it is imported in Ansys.

3. SUSPENSION SYSTEM ANALYSIS

Static structural analysis is carried out to study in details of deformation, stress and
strain acting on the spring.
Steps Performed during the analysis
 A new workbench is opened from File > New option.
 From the various options available on the left pane, Static structural option is
selected.
 Double click on the engineering material data option to enter the various material that
is needed for the analysis.
 Now double click on geometry and a new design modeler window will open up.
 In the click File > Import external geometry and navigate to the part file in igs format
(coil spring.igs) previously created using Catia V5.
 Then click on generate option to generate the image to the design modeler.
 Named the parts individually for the proper identification of which part we are going
to analyse.
 Now double click on the Model step to open the Ansys Mechanical window.
 Here we have lot of options like meshing and Analysis settings.
 Click on the mesh option > Sizing > choose medium for relevance centre.
 Right click on the mesh > click on update mesh option, to generate the mesh for the
object
 Left click the Static structural > Insert > Fixed support and select the surface that is
needed to be fixed and click apply.
 Again, left click the Static structural > Insert > Force and select the surface where
force is to be acted on the spring. Click apply and define the area where the force is
to be applied by components. Then select the respective axis where force acts and
give the force value in Newton (Force = -50N).
 Now pick the solution option. Our solution options are deformation, strain and stress.
 Deformation > Total
 Strain > Equivalent (Von – Mises)
 Stress > Equivalent (Von – Mises)
 Now solve it.
 Click the graphics on that window. You can see the animation of deformation in the
screen.
 Then right click on the image to store the result.

4. Journal Paper
Topic: Design and Analysis of a Suspension Coil Spring for Automotive Vehicle
The study stated optimum design and analysis of a suspension spring for motor vehicle subjected
to static analysis of helical spring the work shows the strain and strain response of spring behavior
will be observed under prescribed or expected loads and the induced stress and strains values for
low carbon structural steel is less compared to chrome vanadium material also it enhances the
cyclic fatigue of helical spring. The following points are drawn from the analyses results.
i. The vonmises stress induced in chromo vanadium steel is 12201MPa and for low carbon
structural steel is 11059MPa.
ii. The vonmises strains induced in chromo vanadium steel is 0.05891 and for low carbon
structural steel is 0.055852.
iii. The stress intensity in chromo vanadium steel is 13649MPa and for low carbon structural steel
is 12135MPa.
iv. The total mechanical strain induced in chromo vanadium is 0.090332 and for low carbon
structural steel is 0.055852.

Based on the modeling and analyses conclude that the low carbon structural steel material is best
suitable for production of helical spring’s compared to chromo vanadium steel materials which are
used in motor vehicles.
5. Result
Thus, the static structural analysis of the coil spring is carried out and the solutions
were obtained.
