How to identify the most suitable replacement for Mr. Ashok, General Shift In Charge, before he

retires in the next three months.

Terms of Reference

-To discover a swap for Mr. Ashok who is right now the General Shift In Charge for Sparkling

Glass Ltd. before he resigns in the following three months.

-To resolve the severe working condition issues for the workers.

Procedure

- Setting up a committee for resume shortlisting of potential candidates within the SGL limited

headed by plant superintendent

-A gist a discussions with the four potential candidates were also shared by the plant superintendent

with the committee.

- Inviting applicants from Open market to join SGL Limited and work for the growth of the
company.

Findings

INTERVIEW WITH FOUR POTENTIAL CANDIDATES

1. Interview with Mr. Khanna.

PROS
- He holds a diploma in glass technology and also 1 year diploma which he acquired from a local

institution offering correspondence courses.

- He has been part of SGL for over three years now and has also worked in another organization

in a similar job for a period of two years.

-He is enrolled in production planning and management which is an evening course.

- He is very good with his communication skills and can easily put forward any case very

efficiently

CONS

-Recently, he had developed a negative attitude which made it difficult for the workers as well as

the union to collaborate and work with him

-In the recent time, he was not able to dedicate to extra hours as earlier which led to deterioration

in his productivity level .

DISCUSSION WITH SUPERINTENDENT

-He was facing certain difficulty in checking in the evening because of his wife as she was scared

of being alone .

-He also complained that the workers do not listen to him, they are obstinate, refused to understand

and do not adhere to whatever he proposes.

1. Interview with Mr. Punjabi

PROS
-He has been working for the organisation with SGL since past 12 years.

-He hold a diploma in glass technology and is very good at handling , production planning and

scheduling.

-With sheer hardwork, reached the level of junior shift incharge.

-Established loyal relationship with the management by giving accurate feedbacks.

-Maintains a very healthy relationship with the workers and is respected amongst them.

CONS

-He often gets confused with numbers

-He finds hard to understand them during production, planning and scheduling.

DISCUSSION WITH SUPREINTENDENT

-He confesses that he is aware of his lack of knowledge with numbers and is trying his best to

overcome this problem.

-He understands the business very well as he has been associated with the organization since last

12 years.

2 Interview with Mr. Gupta.

PROS

-He has been working with SGL past 3 years and acts as a Junior Shift Incharge and he has been

reporting to Mr. Ashok directly.


-He is a trained glass technologist and has been assisting Mr. Ashok in production planning ,

scheduling and costing for a decent amount of time now.

- Mr. Ashok considered him to be his right hand.

-He has a healthy relation and has been able to work with workers and union very efficiently

- He happen to mention that he has been doing most of the planning and scheduling job for general

shift which was under Mr. Ashok.

- He also informed that he has been able to pick up the job well enough without any help from Mr.

Ashok.

- He also assured the superintendent that he could handle to job of planning, scheduling and costing

on his own.

3 Interview with Mr. Gulati.

PROS

-He has a working experience of working in another glass technology company prior to joining

SGL and has acquired his qualifications on supervisory behavior through correspondence courses.

-He is able to handle any kind of situations very well on personal level .

-He willingly put extra hours across different shifts.

DISCUSSION WITH SUPREINTENDENT


-He pointed out that he’s other looked after the job of other colleagues when they were late or

failed to show up.

- He was able to handle the job according to the norms in the absence of the plant superintendent.

Conclusion

Above findings lead to the following conclusions about Mr. Gulati :

-He will be a suitable candidate to takeover Mr. Ashok’s position after his retirement because he

knows the organization pretty well and has the right amount of experience that is required .

-He also has a good reputation among the workers and even union finds it easy to work with him.

-He has been working as Mr. Ashok’s right hand which means he is a very good candidate for the

required position.

Recommendations

-The company should build a proper strategy on how they can reduce the cost of production

and should also do a extensive market research and competitor analysis in order to be updated

with the current market scenarios and prices

-The new recruits should work on improving the difficult working conditions for workers

which will lead to increase in the overall productivity.
