ate the tremendous events of the First World War and Through this we get a multi-dimensional view of the
war as they move through the world-shaking dramas
of the First World War, the Russian Revolution, and
BY LENORE the struggle for women’s suffrage. It moves seamlessly
VELCOFF from Washington to St. Petersburg, from the dirt and
danger of the coal mines to the glittering chandeliers of
a palace, from the corridors of power to the bedrooms
of the mighty.
Through the various characters—and there are quite
a few—we witness the First World War in the trenches
and in the halls of government, from each side. Their
stories all connect at some point. While you invest
in the characters, the story is plot driven and moves
pretty swiftly through the years. There are times that
a character may be left for a year before we hear from
him again. But you don’t feel like you’re missing any
crucial information.
To cover so many years in any decent amount of depth
was a great challenge, to which Follett rises well. I sim-
ply raced through the pages, unable to put this book
down even though it was a hefty nearly 1000 pages. I
love books that can incorporate history with fiction
and not make the reader feel bogged down with facts
but yet you come away with a little more knowledge
than you started with. This is an astounding historical
epic.
I hope to read book #2 - Winter of the World - by next
month.
