Location – Tinian is rural island a few miles south of
Saipan. Flights are $40 (with local ID) each way from Saipan and run daily. Goat Island is an uninhabited island south of Tinian that is part of the municipality.
Hospital – The modest hospital/clinic serves 3500 people.
There are inpatient rooms, an ER / procedure room and a private office for seeing clinic patients. Occasional specialties like pediatrics and OB visit. The Saipan Emergency Department is available 24/7 for consultation, and at any time you can send patients to Saipan for more definitive treatment.
Resources – Other expats (teachers and pilots) live on
Tinian so there are various places to rent from. There are grocery stores, laundry facilities, restaurants, an ACE hardware store, a US Post Office, and Public Library.
Entertainment –Annual festivals, like the Pika Fest,
which celebrates the island’s indigenous hot pepper, help bring people together. There is an active biking community on Tinian, they are called BAT. Historical sites (pictured) are spread through the island as Tinian played a major role in WWII, including as the launching point for the atomic bombs. Most of the entertainment can be found in the natural beauty of the island in the form of hiking, snorkeling, swimming, fishing, boating etc.
Work / Call – Clinic Runs 8 hours per day 5 days a week.
The daily patient load is light as the population is low. Nurses staff the hospital 24/7. If they receive a patient after clinic hours they will call you based on the parameters you have established with them. The current set up is one week of 24/7 clinic/call as the sole provider and one week off. Being so close to Saipan, it is feasible to work in Tinian and live on Saipan during alternate weeks.
