Martina Boquero is a 93-year old woman who has a marvelous ability in making cradle made of sacks
she originally produced. The story behind her doing this was when they arrived in Hernani from Dolores
to permanently live in the town for good, and when he puts his son named Domeng in the cradle made
of rattan, her son accidentally fell from it so she decided to make a cradle made of sacks and starts
asking sacks from her neighbors. But as time goes by, there are a lot of people who appreciates her
works and already start buying it so she already bought materials in the other town. As of today, the
sacks that she is using cost 10-15 pesos depending on its size. 15 pesos and 10 pesos if it is large or small,
respectively. She starts making it in 1995 where she produced her first cradle made of sacks (photo
shown above). It has been 24 years already since she starts making cradles. She said that the hardest
part of doing it is making the lanyards because it takes her a month just to make it and doing it to be a
cradle only takes a week or five days. Before, she solds it for 500 pesos only whether the cradle is big or
small in size because the materials were not that expensive but today the price up to 800-900 pesos
because the cost of the materials were increased as well. As of now, she rarely produced one because
she does not have enough capital to buy materials and also because she's already aging and were too old
that's why her body couldn't take to work in a long period of time anymore but according to her, as long
as she can produce cradles made of sacks, despite of her old age, she will continue to do so because this
is the Lord God's gift to her.
