Fr om Pr iya Gahtr aj, Bor der Staff

My name is Priya Gahtraj. I started working for Rescue EveryDAY in January 2018 as a
Border Counsellor/ Inspector at the Mahespur Border to India. I work from 8 am till 6
pm, six days a week. Every day, I check over 100 vehicles including cars, trucks, pick-ups,
rickshaws, three wheeler tempos and motorcycles. I get very tired physically, but I am
committed to ensure that when I am there, no brokers will cross the border with our
innocent girls. Checking every person is very challenging as most people become angry at
me for stopping them and asking about their purpose of
going to India.
One day, I stopped a pick-up truck at the border, and
asked the 2 girls inside to get down out of the truck.
The driver - a broker - told me he knows me very well
and that one day he would throw acid over my face so
that I will never again show my face to anyone.
Another time, another broker offered me a percentage
of the money he makes every month if I helped him to
cross girls to India. Another example of my job is that
one evening, I was at my booth counselling a girl and a
group of 4 men came and pulled the girl out of the booth. Then they started to hit the
booth. They were going to attack me but I called the police and they left.
Of course it is challenging and high risk work but my heart rejoices when I see gratitude
tears in the eyes of the girls whom we stop as they realise they were saved from being sold
into Brothels if we have not stopped them.

I am Aliya BK. I have worked with RESCUE EveryDAY since 2016. My work is to
rescue girls directly from Indian Brothels and Red Light areas in co-operation with
Indian and Nepalese Police. I have many enemies who have targeted me to kill me
because I cause their businesses to go down. I have received many death threats, and I
have police protection to an extent, but in September 2019, as I was coming home by
motorbike, a brick was thrown at me, causing me to come off my bike. I injured my
chest and my left eye was badly injured by the brick, and now I cannot see with my left
eye.

A stor y of a Rescue Gir l and How
Her Life W as Tr ansfor med

My name is Parbati BK. At the age of 12, I married a man who was 30 years old. My husband
told me he had a job in Delhi, India, so I went with him. I did not know what his work was in
India, but nearby our room there was a house. My husband asked me to go and work there
doing housework, washing dishes and clothes. I started working there. There was only a man
with no wife in the house. I felt very uncomfortable in his presence. Every day when I went
there I saw how he was looking at me with a very bad look in his eyes. One day, in the early
evening, he caught me and raped me. I shouted at him but I could not escape from him.
W hen I came home that night, I told my husband. He threatened me and told me not to tell
anyone but instead to serve him. I was very upset and sad and I stopped going to work. One
morning, my husband hit me and threatened to kill me if I did not go back to work. The next
morning, I went to work. There were several people there drinking, and they got very drunk.
As I was there, they group raped me. I thought of killing myself but later I found out I was
pregnant. I told my husband I was pregnant and he said it?s not his. He stopped caring for me.
I wanted to go back to Nepal but I did not know how to escape from this hell. I shared my
situation with my neighbor and she gave me some money, enough to get me to Nepal by bus.
W hen I came home, my relatives, villagers and even my parents didn't want to accept me into
the village. I wanted to kill myself but I could not. I had lost all hope so I decided to go back
to brothels but I met Pastor Ruben on the Border. He wiped my tear from my eye and he said I
will be his daughter. He took me in to the Safe Home. Here, I got to live in a family
environment. I learned Sewing and Embroidery. Six months later Ruben bought me a sewing
machine and helped me to start a sewing shop. Today, I have a shop and I have son whom I
take very good care of. I am no longer a prostitute, but a skillful woman. More than this, I got
to know Christ and I am water baptized.
