DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION


REAR SUSPENSION

CAUTION: Do not lubricate the stabilizer bar bushings for any reason.

The rear suspension system consists of the following components:

 Shock absorber
 A semi-elliptic leaf-type rear spring
 Wheel and tire assembly
 Rear axle jounce bumpers

For additional information on the rear wheel and tire assembly, refer to WHEELS & TIRES .

SHOCK ABSORBER

SPECIAL TOOL(S) CHART


Hi-Lift Jack
014-00942 or equivalent

CAUTION: Suspension fasteners are critical parts because they affect performance of
vital components and systems and their failure can result in major service
expense. New fasteners must be installed with the same part number or an
equivalent part if installation is necessary. Do not use a replacement part
of lesser quality or substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of these
parts. Orientation of the fasteners is also important. Make sure the
fasteners are installed in the same direction as they were in when
removed.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to JACKING &
LIFTING .

WARNING: Lower the rear axle only enough to gain access to the rear spring.

2. Use the jack to support and lower the rear axle housing assembly.

CAUTION: Do not allow the brake caliper to hang from the brake hose.

3. Remove the 2 brake caliper bolts and the brake caliper. Position the brake caliper aside using mechanic's
wire.
4. Remove the upper shock absorber bolt.
 To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

5. Remove the lower shock absorber bolt.


 To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

6. Remove the shock absorber.


7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

2. If removing the left rear spring, lower the fuel tank to gain access to the spring shackle bolt. For
additional information, refer to FUEL SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION .
 To install, tighten to 300 Nm (222 lb-ft).

WARNING: Lower the rear axle only enough to gain access to the rear spring.

3. Use the jack to support and lower the rear axle housing assembly.
4. Remove the lower shock absorber bolt.
 To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

5. If removing the right rear spring, remove the muffler to gain access to the spring shackle bolt. For
additional information, refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM .
 To install, tighten to 300 Nm (222 lb-ft).

6. Remove the rear spring shackle bolt.


 To install, tighten to 133 Nm (98 lb-ft).

7. Remove the 4 U-bolt nuts and the U-bolt plate.


 Tighten in a cross pattern to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) in 3 steps.

 Light duty: To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 lb-ft).

 Heavy duty: To install, tighten to 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).

8. Remove the spring and the U-bolts.


9. On 4WD vehicles, make sure the spacer is correctly seated between the axle and spring stack, with the
nose pointed inward.
10. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
