Project description: Ovation Control System Upgrade

Lifting & Hoisting Services for Unit DCS Upgrade

1.0 Methodology

The ability to move DCS equipment safely from ground level to turbine house is necessary for many site
activities in MPPCL facilities. Heavy hoists, cranes and cage equipment will be used on materials that are
too bulky or heavy to be moved manually.

While hoisting and rigging plays an important role in transporting such heavy and delicate items, proper
rigging methods and correct choice of equipment can avert physical impairments, serious injuries, and
fatalities.

All EISSS site personnel and contractors have been instructed on the potential dangers of equipment
handling, and have received equipment handling training. Staff and contractors will not lift items of
equipment beyond their capabilities.

The following are the control measures to be followed during supervision on transporting of fragile
equipment to central control room:

1. Cage equipment provided must be certified with valid inspection certificate.

a. Visual checking is necessary to ensure that there are no signs of damages prior to lifting.
b. Check the load capacity of cage equipment before loading the crates into it.
2. All lifting shackles must be third party certified with valid certificate.
a. Visual checking is necessary to ensure that there are no any signs of damage.
b. Correct capacity of slings and shackles must be used for lifting as per weight of the load.
3. Check the swing radius of the crane and ensure that it is unobstructed by any facility. Ensure that
crane is positioned correctly.
4. Calculate the weight of lifting and hoisting of load not to overload of crane. Correct lifting angle
must be used for lifting. 60 degree is the best lifting angle.
5. Tag line must be used to control the load and avoid hitting any plant facility such as pipelines and
other unit equipment.
6. Check wind speed and do not lift when it exceeds 25 knots.
7. Use cage equipment to distribute the load of each crate to be lifted.
8. Wooden mats shall be used under crane outriggers to distribute the load.
9. Crane outriggers must not be placed near any drain line otherwise there is a chance of sinking of
these outriggers resulting in crane tripping over.
10. Trained banksmen must guide the crane when moving inside the plant. (2) – Two riggers shall be
assigned, one guiding at the front and the other at the back.
11. Crane positioning must be checked via site visit and marked on the plot plan of the plant to
ensure that ground is stable for bearing crane weight.
12. Barricades and proper signage will be provided to keep unauthorized personnel away from the
lifting area.

Heavy or awkward items will be broken down into smaller units or dual lifted where this is not possible. It
is the responsibility of the site supervisor to identify and control potentially dangerous handling situations
as they occur on site on a day to day basis.
