CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Garbage has become a social problem. Most of the waste is burned or

discarded, resulting in contamination of the air, water and soil. Sorting waste is

an effective way to reduce the amount of waste that is deposited into our landfills.

By using separate containers for each form of waste.

Rapid population growth has led to insufficient waste management in

metro cities and urban areas, leading to disease spread. It is estimated that in

2006, 2.02 billion tons of solid municipal waste were produced universally. To

minimize the risks to the public and the community, the collection, storage,

processing and disposal of waste must be properly managed. In our plan, "auto

waste segregator and monitoring system," an effective method for disposing the

waste has been developed. This paper proposes an automated waste segregator

for a household segregation system which is a simple, easy-to-use solution, so

that the waste can be sent directly for processing. Automatic waste segregator is

designed to classify the waste into three main categories: biodegradable, non-

biodegradable and recyclable, making waste management more effective. To

track the process of collecting waste, ultrasonic sensors are installed. It would

position the sensors in the inlet. When the garbage hits the sensor point, a

mechanical flap that releases the garbage into the bin will be given the warning.

An efficient waste singularization and sorting system is given by the

Automatic Garbage Sorting Bin.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Rapid population growth in metro towns and urban areas has led to

inadequate waste management leading to disease spread. It is estimated that

2,02 billion tons of municipal solid waste were produced universally in 2006. In

order to minimize risks to the public and the community, the collection, storage,

processing and disposal of waste must be properly managed. In our "Auto Waste

Segregator and Monitoring System" plan, an effective waste disposal method has

been developed. This document offers an automated waste segregator, which is

an easy-to-use, cheap solution for a household separation system, allowing

waste to be sent to processing directly. Automatic waste segregator is designed

to classify the waste into three main categories: metallic, organic and plastic,

making waste management more effective. To track the process of collecting

waste, ultrasonic sensors are installed. It would position the sensors in the inlet.

When the garbage hits the sensor point, a mechanical flap that releases the

garbage into the bin will be given the warning.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study focuses on the automation of sorting garbage bins using Arduino

technology.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. How many grams of garbage can the automatic garbage sorting bin sort or

segregate?

2. What is the purpose of the automatic garbage sorting bin?

3. What is the significant difference in the automation of sorting garbage bins

in control and experimental group?

HYPOTHESIS

There is no significant difference in the automation of sorting garbage bins in

the control and experimental group.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will be significant to the following groups and individuals:

For the Janitors, to help them sort garbage easily.

For the Locality, to help people sort garbage easily.

For Future Researchers, to serve as their guide for their research.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study will use Arduino Technology in making an automatic garbage

sorting bin. This study will be conducted in one of the researcher’s houses, and

will be conducted on January 2020.

CHAPTER II

RELATED LITERATURE

With economic developments the globally generated wastes are

increasing. The current global Municipal solid waste generation levels are

approximately 1.3 billion tons per year and are expected to increase to

approximately 2.2 billion tons per year by 2025. India with a population of 1.35

billion has per capita waste generation ranging from 0.12 to 5.1 kg per person

and an average of 0.45kg/ capita/ day. Segregation of waste helps increase the

recyclable materials and control unwanted degradation, which might result in

emission of harmful gasses. In India the segregation of domestic waste is done

at the municipal factories, where huge machinery are used for separating

recyclable materials. Implementation of separate bins for collection of waste

materials is done, but it does not yield its purpose due to lack of awareness,

ignorance and negligence. The existing system for collection of municipal solid

waste does have any means to verify the proper disposal or its timely

maintenance. Paper contaminated with food cannot be recycled, since the paper

is mixed with water in a large churner, the oil eventually separates from the

paper. The oil does not dissolve in water, instead it mixes in with the paper

during the production, leading to formation of an oily layer over the paper, making

unusable.
RELATED STUDY

In India, 60 million tons of waste is being generated every year. Ten

million tons of garbage is generated in metropolitan cities. The landfills of most of

these cities are overflowing with no space for fresh garbage waste. The

philosophy of “waste management hierarchy” has been adopted by most nations

as the step for developing municipal solid waste management strategies.

According to centre of science and environment, innovative disposal and

recycling methods must be introduced instead of landfill sites. Thus, we have

proposed a cost effective “Automatic waste segregator and monitoring system”

for proper management of waste. Automatic waste segregator categorizes the

waste as plastic, metallic or organic. The monitoring system helps to monitor the

waste collection process. The common method of waste disposal is by

unplanned and uncontrolled dumping at landfill areas. This method is hazardous

to human health, plant and animal life. When the waste is segregated into basic

streams such as plastic, metallic and organic, the waste has a higher potential of

recovery, and then, recycled and reused. The organic waste is converted either

into compost or methane-gas or both. Compost can replace demand for chemical

fertilizers, and biogas can be used as a source of energy. The metal waste could

be reused or recycled. Even if there are large scale industrial waste segregators

present, it is always feasible to separate the waste at the source itself. The

benefit of doing so is that the occupational hazard for waste workers is reduced.

Also, the separated waste could be directly sent to the recycling and processing

plant instead of sending it to the segregation plant then to the recycling plant.
SYNTHESIS/SYNOPSIS

In this study that we will make is the different properties in automation in

sorting garbage. The main materials in making an automatic garbage sorting bin

are detachable bins, mechanical flap, user interface, stepper motor and a battery.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Detachable Bins - these rotate to allow the garbage to enter the correct bin.

Mechanical Flap - it opens when the garbage item has been detected, thus

directing it to the bin.

User Interface - it provides the instructions on how to use the system i.e. user

friendly.

Stepper Motor - it provides the rotation required by the bin.

Battery - it provides the power required.

METHODOLOGY

This section shows the materials/equipment and the procedures that will

be used in the research study.

MATERIALS

The materials and equipment that are needed in this research are detachable

bins, mechanical flap, user interface, stepper motor, and battery for the

automation of sorting garbage bins.

PROCEDURES

1. Gather your equipment and materials that you’ll need in your study.

Get the materials, but before using it, make sure all materials work for the

preparation of the activity.

2. Build the bin holder.

Build a holder for the bin to not let the bin let loose.

3. Place the materials in the correct place.

Place the materials in the correct place. The inlet should be next to the user

interface, the user interface should be next to the inlet, the sensors should be

in the inlet, the stepper motor should be placed on the floor of the bin holder,

the detachable bins should be located over the plate of the stepper motor

and the battery should be located on the bottom of the whole contraption.
