IDENTIFICATION OF METAL PARTICLES − INSPECTION/CHECK−00

Task 70−34−00−280−100:

1. General − Identification Of Metal Particles

A. General

(1) When unidentified particles of metal are found, they


may be steel, titanium, tin, aluminum, magnesium,
silver, bronze, or cadmium. In some cases type of
metal may be determined by color and hardness of
pieces. However, when particles cannot be positively
identified by visual inspection and knowledge of
exact character of metal is desired as an aid to
troubleshooting, a few simple tests will help determine
kind of metal present.

WARNING: USE EXTREME CARE IN HANDLING THE ACIDS.

(2) The equipment and chemicals that follow are necessary


for these tests.

(a) A Source Of Open Flame

(b) A Permanent Magnet

(c) Two Ounces Of Aqueous Solution That Contains Ten


Percent Ammonium Nitrate

(d) An Electric Soldering Iron

(e) Two Ounces Each Of 50 Percent By Volume


Hydrochloric Acid And Concentrated Nitric Acid

(f) Sodium Hydroxide Pellets

(g) A Watch Glass

(h) A White Porcelain Spot Plate

(i) Ammonium Bifluoride Crystals

(j) Five To Ten Percent Hydrofluoric Acid Or


Concentrated Sulfuric Acid

(k) Three To Ten Percent Hydrogen Peroxide

(l) Concentrated Phosphoric Acid.
