Nanette Tote
artsy-crafty babe sewing patterns by Rebeka Lambert

Materials:

• 1/2 yard fabric for the Exterior body

• 1/2 yard fabric for the Lining
• 1/2 yard accent fabric for Top, Straps, and
Pocket
• 1 1/4 yard **20” heavy weight sew-in
interfacing (see notes below)
• 1/2 yard décor bond fusible interfacing
for the straps and interior top pieces
• magnetic snap
Finished Size: 13.5” wide x 13” tall x 4” deep
Notes:

In order for this pattern to fit on standard 8.5 x 11 paper, various pieces of this
pattern need to be taped together to make full size pieces. Follow the mark-
ings on the pattern pieces for proper placement.
Make sure that your printer page scaling is set to “none” or printing is set at
“100%”. A scale is included on the pattern page .
These instructions are written for making the bag out of three coordinating 44”
wide quilting cottons. All illustrations use the boxed bottom option. There is a
section (Bag Body—***rounded bottom) explaining how to make the round
bottom option.
**I personally use a sew-in interfacing between the lining and exterior of all my
bags to add durability and structure. My interfacing of choice is HTCW Ultra
Firm Stabilizer or Pellon 926 Extra Firm Stabilizer. Fusible Fleece, mid-heavy
weight fusible interfacings, or canvas will work just as well, the choice is yours.
All Seam Allowances are 1/2” and are included on the pattern pieces.

Instructions:
right side wrong side

Cut out all paper pattern pieces and tape together where necessary. Next,
cut out pieces from fabrics and interfacing.
• exterior body - 2 from exterior fabric

• top – 4 from accent fabric, 2 from sew-in interfacing, 2 from fusible inter-
facing
• strap – 2 from accent fabric, 2 from fusible interfacing

• lining - 2 from lining fabric, 2 from sew-in interfacing

• pocket – 2 from accent fabric

Baste, pin, or fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of the lining, the 4 top
pieces, and the straps (interfacing the pocket is optional).

Straps

Make the straps by first folding one in half lengthwise, with the right side out.
Press to make a crease. Open the strap up, then fold the outside edges of the
strap to the center, using the crease as a guide (fig. a). Press the folds. Fold
the strap in along the first crease bringing the outer folds together (fig. b). Press
and pin in place, then sew along the folded lines (fig. c). Repeat for the sec-
ond strap.

Tops

On the wrong side of the bag tops lined with fusi-

ble interfacing, mark the placement of the mag-
netic snap, 2” from the top edge at the top cen-
ter. You could insert the snap now, but I prefer to
insert the snap after the top has been sewn.
With the right side of a bag top facing up, pin a
strap to both side of the top edge, 1/2” from the
outside edge (top photo). Next, layer another
top, right side down. The strap should be sand-
wiched between two top pieces, right sides to-
gether. If using both the fusible & sew-in interfac-
ing, use one of each for each bag top.
Next, sew along the sides and top of the bag
top, sewing all layers together.
Flip the top right side out, then topstitch along
the sides and top of the bag top.
Insert the magnetic snap if not done so already.
Repeat for second set of bag tops.
Interior Pocket

Using the two pocket pieces, place them right

sides together, then sew around all 4 sides of the
pocket, leaving about a 3” opening on either a
side or the bottom of the pocket. Clip the cor-
ners of the pocket to reduce bulk after turning.
Turn the pocket right side out using the 3” open-
ing, then press.
Position the pocket at the center of a lining
piece, 2 1/2” from the top edge. Sew in place
around the sides and bottom of the pocket. Sew
an additional seam at the center of the pocket.
Be sure to back stitch at all beginning and end-
ing seams. If desired, you can make an addi-
tional pocket on the other lining piece following these same steps.

Pleats
Transfer the pleat dots from the exterior body
pattern piece to the exterior body pieces.
Create the pleats by matching up the two large
dots at either side of an exterior body piece.
Fold the excess fabric behind the pleat towards
the outside of the body. Pin each pleat in place.
Repeat for all pleats on both exterior body
pieces.

Bag Body—boxed bottom

Place the two exterior body pieces right sides to-

gether, lining up all the edges. Sew each side
and the bottom of the bag. At this point the cor-
ners of the bag are not sewn.

To “box” the corners, you’ll start by opening up

one corner so that the un-sewn edge forms a
straight line while the side seam and bottom
seam are lined up and touching each other. This
will create a diagonal fold across both body
pieces. Sew along the straight edge from one
fold to the other, thus closing the opening at the
corner. Repeat for second corner.

Repeat this process for the lining, but leave a 4”-

5” opening at the bottom center of the lining.

Bag Body—***rounded bottom

Transfer dart markings from the pattern to the

wrong side of the fabric.

On the wrong side of the body, line up the legs

of the dart, creating a fold. Sew a straight line
from the end of the dart at the outer edge to the
point. Be sure to backstitch at each dart point to
secure the dart. Repeat this process for all darts
on both the exterior and lining.

With right sides together, ling up raw edges and

bottom darts of the bag exterior. Sew around
the sides and bottom of the bag.
Repeat this process for the lining, but leave a 4”-
5” opening at the bottom center of the lining.

leave gap open in lining

Join Exterior to the Lining

Turn the bag lining right side out. Pin the bag
tops to the lining, lining up the raw edges. The
top piece with the magnetic snap should be
facing the lining.

Overlap the edges of the bag tops where they

extend beyond the side seams of the lining
(once the bag is fully assembled, this won’t be
noticeable).

Turn the bag exterior wrong side out then insert
the lining into the exterior (right sides will be
touching and the bag tops will be sandwiched
between the two). Line up the side seams and
raw edges, adjust the pleats if necessary. Sew
all around the open edge of the bag, joining all
layers together. Trim the excess interfacing
along the seam allowance to reduce the bulk at
the seam.
Using the opening at the bottom of the lining,
pull the exterior through, turning the bag right
side out.

Finish
Stuff the lining into the exterior of the bag,
smooth out all the wrinkles and press if necessary.
(optional step) Topstitch along the seam joining
the top of the bag to the body for more durabil-
ity and a finished look.
Finally, sew the opening in the bottom of the lin-
ing closed.
Enjoy your new bag!
