Introduction

Welcome to the Dots Reader Expander!

In this third Drum eBook we will take an in-depth look at expanding our rhythmic
vocabulary. That’s one of the reasons I named this eBook, Dots Reader Expander.
We will start by looking at faster notation and rests using one and two bar exercises.
Then we will explore more rhythmic possibilities with rudiments. We will combine
notes we have looked at previously in the first and second eBook with some we haven’t
yet touched upon.
The Rhythm Expander section makes up the bulk of this eBook. It is an exploration of
many different tuplet note groupings.

The Reader Expander

Here we will explore sixteenth note triplets, thirty-second notes and odd note
tuplet groupings.

The Rudiments Expander

In the section we will explore many more Flam, Drag, Ruff, and Roll stickings. It is
essential for any drummer to have a good understanding of rudimental sticking patterns,
as these form the basis of improvisational technique. Spending time on developing
your hand technique will aid you in anything you attempt to play on the kit.

The Rhythm Expander

This section forms the body of the ebook. Some of these tuplet groupings are becoming
more and more common in diverse musical settings. This is one reason why you should
get to know these rhythms and feel confident that you can use them as and when your
musical ear indicates.

- Roll Notation
Ex 1 - We will start with the Quarter Note roll. Rolls can be played with open or closed sticking, depending on the type of music being played.
Play the rolls both as an open double stroke and as a closed buzz roll. You will count one sixteenth note for each double stroke.

a 5 or 7 stroke roll. It largely depends on the tempo of the piece and what musical direction is given.

Ex 3 - The general rule when playing rolls that are not tied over to the next note, is that you stop the roll short of the next note. This is not a
commandment, though. It largely depends on the musical situation and what kind kind of piece you are playing. The rolls below can
also take on the meaning of simple note repititions. In which case, you would play the roll through to the next note.

Rhythm Expander 11 - Triplet Roll/Fill-ins Beats

hi-hat & snare mix
These rhythms can be used as backbeat rhythms or as fill-ins. They are a series of stroke rolls played in triplet format. All the snare drum notes that are not
accented are to be played as ghost strokes. Of course, you can experiment as desired, but it would be good to start off playing unaccented notes as ghost
strokes. In order to concentrate on the hand patterns, we can play a simple quarter note rhythm on the kick drum throughout each exercise.

Rhythm Expander 12
- Triplet Beats & Fill-ins Mix
In this section we will use some of the triplet swing beats from the previous pages in a 4 bar sequence incorporating fill-ins.
The crash cymbal played on the first beat of the first bar of the sequence is not to be repeated on the second bar; play this note
on the hi-hat. First of all, I would work out the fill-in and practice it until you can play it without needing to read it. Then play
the two bars of rhythm together with the fill-in. Also, try creating your own dynamic contrasts on both the rhythms and fill-ins.

In this second section of FIVES, we can try out some rhythmic combinations bettween the hi-hat and snare. First, learn the sticking pattern
of each exercise on the snare drum only, then move your right hand to the hi-hat, leaving your left hand on the snare, and play the same sticking.

Ex 1 - FIVES played with one hand on the hi-hat. Ex 2 - FIVES played as single strokes on the hi-hat.

some Ten Note tuplet groupings. Here we play two notes to every quintuplet note count. Further down the

Here we will play a series of sixteenth note rhythms with septuplet fill-ins. You could also try playing a two beat
or three beat fill-in in the second bar. At first, practice the fill-in rhythm on the snare. Once you feel comfortable
with the sticking and rhythm, play the tom sequence as written.

- The Drum Chart
Here is an example of a drum chart. In writing this I have tried to use most of the musical chart symbols that we looked at in the Musical Symbols Expander.
If you are not sure of the meaning of a musical symbol, refer back to page 3. First, try reading through the chart to map out the route you are going to take.
Once you have a good sense of the road map, try playing through it, observing the dynamics and creating your own fill-ins.
