APPROACHES IN TEACHING ARALING PANLIPUNAN

1. DISCOVERY APPROACH

The teacher must allow the pupils to identify the problems or questions and then look for the answers
themselves. Creativity of the pupils is lost when the teacher reveals important facts about the subject matter to
be learned without the pupils researching for them. They have to do the discovery themselves.
According to Jerome Brunner, discovery teaching is:
a. Self-rewarding
b. Learning to learn
c. Active participation on the part of the learners
d. Is long lasting

2. THE PROCESS APPROACH

The purpose of this is to equip the pupils with necessary skills they need to solve problems they
encounter in life at present or in the future.

SINGLE PROCESS COMPLEX PROCESS

A. Observing A. Reporting
B. Classifying B. Analyzing
C. Listening C. Using original sources
D. Guessing D. Outlining
E. Using the dictionary E. Summarizing
F. Reading for details F. Taking notes
G. Recording G. Reading nd using maps
H. Grouping H. Planning
I. Others I. Using charts and graphs
J. Debating
K. Evaluating
L. Others

3. THE INQUIRY APPROACH

It is an approach to learning that involves a process of exploring the natural or material world that leads
to asking questions and making discoveries in the search for new understandings.
A hallmark of inquiry approach is student activity. Teachers facilitate student learning. Among the
advantages of inquiry teaching are: · Students generate their own knowledge; · Answers are discovered by
students and are, therefore, more memorable; · Divergent, creative thinking is encouraged; · Higher order
thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation) are emphasized; · Skills integrate with knowledge as students
organize and analyze their data in a variety of ways (maps, graphs, charts, etc.)

4. THE INTEGRATED APPROACH

Teaching and learning are more meaningful and further enriched if lesson is connected to other disciplines
(interdisciplinary) and is connected to real life experiences (transdisciplinary).

The subject itself is an integration of several interrelated disciplines-history, economics, geography, political
science, sociology, anthropology, archeology and psychology.
