Group Activity:
Group 1 : Hugot Line or Punch line
10 minutes Group 2 : Online Simulation
Group 3 : Writing Chemical Equation

4.3 Analysis
Ask
1. What is redox reaction?
2. What is oxidation? Reduction?
3. When is an atom oxidized? Reduced?
4. Explain how electrons are transferred from one atom to another?
10 minutes 5. What is an oxidizing agent? Reducing agent?
6. How to balanced redox equation?
7. How to determine the charge or oxidation numbers of the atoms involved in chemical
bonding?

4.4 Abstraction

Redox reaction deals with movement of electrons from one atom to another during a
chemical reaction.(Oxygen doesn’t have to be present).Oxidation: LOSS of one or more
electrons.Reduction: GAIN of one or more electrons. Oxidation & reduction always occur
together.Electrons travel from what is oxidized towards what is reduced.
Oxidizing Agent: substance reduced. Gains electrons.Reducing Agent: substance oxidized
Loses electrons.
Rules in assigning the oxidation number
1. Free metals have zero oxidation number ( those that are not involved in a chemical
bond)
2. Nonmetals in their molecular form have zero oxidation number. ( N2, O2, Cl2 )
3. Most transition metals can have different oxidation numbers
4. Oxygen in a chemical bond always have an oxidation number of -2. It has -1 oxidation
number in peroxide.
5. Hydrogen has a +1 oxidation number when bonded to a non metal; -1 when bonded to
a metal

4.5 Application

Why is understanding redox reaction significant? Cite real world examples of redox
10 minutes reactions that occur everyday.

4.6 Assessment
What is oxidized and reduced?
What are the oxidizing and reducing agents?
1) 3Br2 + 2AlI3 2AlBr3 + 3I2
Anlysis of Learners' 2) Mg + CuSO4 MgSO4 + Cu
10 minutes Products 3) 2K + Br2 2KBr
4) Cu + 2AgNO3 Cu(NO3)2 + 2Ag

4.7 Assignment Enhancing / improving Study in advance photosynthesis

10 minutes the day’s lesson
4.8 Concluding Activity Time is free but its priceless, You cant own it but you can use it, once you’ve lost it you can
10 minutes never get it back.
