PROJECT PROFILE | PROJECT TITLE: GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN CULTURAL EDUCATION 2. COMMITTEE AND PROJECT CATEGORY: PCEP 3. PROJECT BACKGROUND: ‘The NCCA-PCEP initiated in 2008 the offering of a credit-earning post-baccalaureate teacher enhancement program called Certificate Program on Cultural Education (CPCE) Currently, it formally known as the Graduate Diploma in Cultural Education (GDCE), Given the program objectives of the Philippine Cultural Education Program (PCEP), the 24-unit program offers scholarship opportunities for 35 region-based public elementary and high school teachers in the core subject areas (Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, English and Filipino Languages) and MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health) to undergo a two-summer intensive training. The GDCE covers a total of 432 hours of intensive training designed to integrate functional understanding of the local and national history, culture, heritage and the arts into the five core subjects areas ~ Social Sciences, Languages, Science, Math and MAPEH. Its requires the participants to produce researches on local history, reflection papers, and group and individual lesson ‘exemplars on culture-based basic education. ‘Taking into consideration the tremendous response and strong demand for continuing professional edueation ftom public school teachers, the NCCA-PCEP have embarked on a sustainable partnership with HEls- Teacher Ediication Institutions nationwide for an enhanced GDCE delivery, and expansion of the program into the snaster’s level The move is seen as a concrete step in furthering PCEP’s goals of providing continuing teacher's ‘materials for utilization in the basic education curriculum training and development of eulture-based instruct In this respect, the Northwest Samar State University (NwSSU) willingly offers partnership with the NCCA to serve a8 2 conduit HEI in order to reach out more recipients of said worthwhile program in Eastern Visayas who are in need of such continuing cultural education opportu NwSSU was able to produce graduates of GDCE for two batches (batch | -summer2014 - 2015 and summer 2016 ~ 2017). Teacher-participants were grateful for the opportunity provided to them and they are enthusiastic and in high-spicit in implementing the innovations and expertise gained from the exposure, Such experience was commendable since teacher-partiipants reflected the significance of the integration of culture- based education to their classes, 4. Project purpose ‘The comprehensive taining of elementary and secondary school teachers will expand their knowledge based in Philippine history, culture, heritaye and the arts. This will also help the teacher-participants develop knowledge structures, framework and information systems that integrate culture-based education into the eurriculum of basic education, This will harness capability to contribute deeper understanding and appreciation of focal history, culture, heritage and arts and likewise empower teachers through a lifelong learning of cultural education cc. Results/Outputs This project will benefit 35 teachers in Eastern Visayas, These teacher-participants will showease on how +o integrate culture-based education into their classes. They are expected 10 make innovations on their classroom {encounters by introducing local cultural icons, heritage, customs and traditions in order to develop best practices in the region. Such innovations will be reflected in the lesson exemplars where the teacher-participants will be developing as they complete the course. 4. Inputs!
