PROJECT PROPOSAL

I. PROGRAM TITLE: ORCHESTRATING EXPERTISE TOWARDS GLOCAL


EXCELLENCE

II. PROGRAM RATIONALE:


It has always been the goal of NORTHWEST SAMAR STATE
UNIVERSITY to develop the students wholly, not only to develop them
intellectually, morally, emotionally, but also physically, socially and
aesthetically.
In line with the celebration of the English month on the month of
November various events and competitions to be contested in order to learn
and appreciate language skills and proficiencies through relevant language
activities and competencies to cognitive domains. In other words, it is an
avenue and opportunity of the students to showcase their expertise in writing
and speaking.
The English Educators Association will be conducting the English month
celebration on November 25, 2019. The said event will be held at College of
Education grounds. It is a day-long celebration with various competition in line
with this year’s English month theme: “Upholding English expertise for
communicative competences. English major students are expected to
participate on the said events. Series of events will be held during this day,
this will enable students to create camaraderie at the same time gain
learnings on the said events.

III. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:


The English Educator Association will be conducting 2019 English Month
Celebration which Includes:

Photo Booth, where students can take a photo opportunity on the English
Month Wizardy Photo Booth located at CoEd Grounds.
Spoken Word Poetry, an activity where students deliver their original
literary pieces about the English Month Celebration.
Essay Writing, an activity where students compete for creating a piece of
a specific chosen topic in line with the English Month Celebration
Group Quiz Bee, an activity where every student will compete with each
other in same year level through a series of questions with regard to
history of English
Movie Review, an activity where every year level will choose five
representatives for the making a review of the chosen movie.
Poster Making, an activity where students will compete to showcase their
creativity in Poster Making.

Impromptu Speaking, an activity where students will compete for


answering an on the spot question about English Month Celebration.

GUIDELINES:
Spoken Word Poetry
 To enter the contest, you must be a registered student of NWSSU and taking Up
BSED Major in English.
 Your spoken word piece must be 3-5 minutes long. If it doesn't meet the 2-minute
minimum time duration, the performer will be ineligible to place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. If
it goes past 5 minutes, expect to be cut off.
 Spoken word is a piece of creative writing that is best delivered through
performance, so it can be a story or a free verse poetry. The piece must be your
own creative writing, but you can quote other writers. If you reference other
authors, your performance must include verbal citations.
 Your spoken word performance must connect to this year’s theme of Celebration.
 You may use costumes, props, music, and visual aids to share your spoken word
performance. You are also welcome to include dialogue and act out characters.

Essay Writing
 Student essayists shall write an argumentative essay on a topic given by the
facilitator
 Essay shall follow the five-paragraph structure (introduction, body, and
conclusion).
 Essay shall be written on the spot for one hour only
 Upon submission of the results to the committee, judges’ decision shall be
considered final and irrevocable.
CRITERIA PERCENTAGE
Communication
Essay should clearly communicate student essayist’s 40%
arguments on a given topic or theme in a logical and
concise manner.

Writing Mechanics
Essay should observe proper conventions of writing
such as grammar, punctuations, capitalizations, and 20%
word usage.

 Only three student writers shall be awarded as Champion, 1st Runner-Up, and
2nd Runner-Up.

Group Quiz Bee


 The coverage of the quiz bee includes English Literature.
 It is open to all members of EEA and will have three representatives per group.
 The group will write their answers at the black part of the illustration board.
 All groups will answer the same set of questions in writing. Before the question is
read, the group must raise their chalk.
 There will be three components in the competition namely: Elimination Round,
Semi-Final Round and the Final Round.
 The elimination round has seven questions worth 2 points each, the semi-final
round has nine questions worth 3 points each and in the final round has seven
questions worth 5 point each.
 In the elimination round, only the top 5 groups will qualify to the next (semi-final)
round.
 At the end of semi-final round, only the top three (3) groups will move to the final
round.
 The questions will be read by the quizmaster twice.
 After the second (2nd) reading, the Quizmaster shall say “go”, only then the
groups be allowed to write their answers. Automatically, the (10) second time-
limit will begin with the word “go” by the Quizmaster.
 After the time-limit, the whistle is blown by the time-keeper. The groups must
stop writing and must raise their answer boards.
 The Quizmaster shall read and verify the groups answer.
 The group who gets the highest number of points is automatically declared the
champion or the runner-up as the case may be.

Movie Review
 Each group should write a movie review within two hours, after then the movie
was viewed by all the participants.
 Every group should compose of five members.
 Each group is only allowed to bring three laptops for the making
 The review should be printed in an 8.5” x 11” bond paper in Arial font style,12
font size, 1” x 1” margin and 1.0 spacing.

Writing mechanics
Proper conventions of writing such as grammar,
punctuations, capitalization and word usage. Printing 10%
format is accurately observed.

Poster and Collage Making

 Participants must bring their own art materials including cartolina, oil pastel,
marker, pencil and eraser.
 participant must make poster according to the theme of program.
 The participants will be given 1 minutes for the making of their poster.
 The result will be announced after deliberations.

Impromptu Speaking
 Contestants will draw a topic from a fish bowl and will be expected to begin
speaking to that topic after 5 minutes.
 The length of the presentation should be between 4 and 7 minutes. 5. Hand
signals will be provided at the 5-, 3-, 2-, and 1-minute marks as well as at the 30-
second and final 10-second marks.
 The judges will take excess time into account in their scoring.
CRITERIA PERCENTAGE

Presentation
a. Vocal delivery - pronunciation, intonation, pitch, tone, 40%
projection, articulation and pace should be considered and
employed to convey the ideas, mood and argument of the speech.

b. Manner of speaking - the speaker should give the appearance of


relaxed self-assurance and conviction. Movement, gesture and
facial expression should reinforce the vocal delivery. Notes, when
used, should be handled unobtrusively.

Content
a. Originality /Evidence / Information - the judges will look
for the speaker’s ability to be original, to support arguments with 40%
evidence, and to supply information, with little preparation time.
b. Organization - the speech should have a clear beginning, middle,
and end. The judges will take into consideration whether the
speech is introduced in an original fashion, how well the subject
matter is organized, and whether it is brought to a logical
conclusion
Audience Response
Judges will consider the speaker’s effectiveness and persuasiveness
in conveying the spirit of the speech as well as stimulating audience 20%
response, gauging audience reaction, and adapting accordingly
