Benteng Pendem (Indonesian for "Buried Fort"; Dutch: Kustbatterij op de Landtong te
Tjilatjap) is an abandoned Dutch fortress in Cilacap Regency, Central Java.

Around the fortress there are 11 places where cannons were originally sited. The
fortress includes a prison, a two-story ammunition hold, a 113-metre long tunnel with
four entrances, a barracks building with fourteen chambers, a clinic, and 330 metres of
fortifications. These structures, constructed of brick which is covered in plaster, are
located under 1–3 metres of dirt, giving the fortress its popular name; from a distance,
the buildings resemble mounds. They are generally in poor condition owing to exposure
to the elements, particularly sea water and moisture.
The fort which is now known as Benteng Pendem, began construction in 1861. At the
time, the port of Cilacap was an important one for the transportation of goods
from Yogyakarta and Purworejo, and thus defended well for its strategic importance;
another fortification from this period can be found in Karang Bolong, Nusa
Kambangan.
The fortress began operations in 1879, and held numerous prisoners – both civilian
and military – while occupied by the Dutch. After 1965, Benteng Pendem was left
unused, and fell into disrepair and was covered in sand. Around this time the Pertamina
storage facilities were built, taking land which had belonged to the fortress. It was
excavated in 1986, and, after a year of preparations, the fort was opened to tourists by
the Cilacap regional government in 1987. In 2002 and 2005, dangerously dilapidated
areas of the fortress were fenced off. By 2013 Benteng Pendem had become the area's
prime tourist destination, as well as a Cultural Property of Indonesia.

Henry Ford was a famous American engineer and car manufacturer. He was born on a
farm in Dearborn in Michigan in 1863.
He was the first man to mass produce cars at a price which people could afford.
Although at first he made automobiles that only rich people could afford, he wanted to build
a car that was cheap enough for most families to own and in 1903 he succeeded.
Ford was very interested in horseless carriages. He decided to build one himself. He
began to experiment with engines until his first car was made in 1893. Night after night he

then ran it round the block. It went well. Finally, in 1903 the motor company was founded.
The thing that made his company famous was his mass production line. Instead of

 Computer with CD or DVD writer drive.
 Optical media authoring programme.
 Blank recordable CD or DVD.
Steps:
1. Determine the type of movie output that you would like. The burning process for a
CD movie output is different from that of a DVD.

DVD drives, it is still advisable to copy it to the hard drive for faster and more stable
data transfer rates during the burning process.
4. Since DVD movie formats use different streams for the audio, video and even the
subtitle, the raw movie must first be converted to a DVD format before it can be
burned.
5. Launch the video converter programme and convert the raw movie file into a DVD
format.
6. Open your authoring programme and select the option to burn a movie.
7. Click on the burn button to begin authoring process.
8. Once the burning procedure is completed and the disc is finalized, the application

ORANGUTAN

Orangutan, great ape of Southeast Asia. Its name means “man of the jungle” in
Malay, an Indonesian language. Orangutans live only on the island of Borneo and in the
northern corner of the island of Sumatra.
The orangutan spends most of its time in trees, using its long arms and hook-shaped
hands and feet for grasping branches and vines. It seldom ventures to the ground, but when
it does, it walks on all fours.
Orangutans are characterized by coarse, long, reddish-brown fur. Male orangutans
average about 95 cm in length and about 77 kg in weight. Females are smaller, reaching
about 78 cm in height and weighing only about 37 kg. The male has puffy cheeks and a
hanging throat-pouch. This pouch contains air sacks that help produce a groaning, bubbling
call, which can be heard at least 1 km away.
Half of the orangutan’s diet consists of fruit, but these animals also eat young leaves,
soft inner bark, termites, eggs, and occasionally monkeys. Orangutans accumulate fat in
winter to prepare for the monsoon season in April through October, when food is scarce.
Orangutans are solitary creatures. Except when mating, adults usually travel and
forage for food independently. When a female is ready to mate, she will seek out an adult
male. The pair will stay together for several days until the female is pregnant, then they will
solitary again. The gestational period for orangutans is just under nine months, nearly the
same as in human beings. Females give birth to a single infant about once every four to eight
years. Infants stay very close to their mothers for the first three years until they are weaned.
They spend the next three to five years becoming increasingly independent of their mother,
gaining complete independence at about eight years of age.

Bahasa Inggris/TPUN/1819
12

Although it is illegal to kill, own, or export orangutans, poaching continues. Also, the
orangutan habitat is rapidly diminishing as a result of large-scale logging and burning of
forests. The massive forest fires on Sumatra and Borneo in 1997 and 1998 killed thousands of
orangutans and destroyed the habitat of thousands more, endangering the survival of the
species.

(adapted from Encarta Encyclopedia)

A. By the help of the hanging throat-pouch they have.
