During my lifetime, like many of you, I have read many

books. And there have been countless that were forgetta-
ble, but there have been some that have inspired, moved,
and challenged me. But there have only been a few that I
would classify as life-changing. One of those treasures of
literature is The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri
Nouwen. Nouwen’s transparency, honesty, self-reflection, and love for
Christ come pouring out in this short but must read book! Many of Fa-
ther Nouwen’s thoughts moved me and it’s hard to pinpoint just one,
but this particular one spoke to the very depths of my soul and I believe
it will speak to you as well.

Nouwen wrote, ”I am the prodigal son every time I search for uncondi-
tional love where it cannot be found. Why do I keep ignoring the place of
true love and persist in looking for it elsewhere? Why do I keep leaving
home where I am called a child of God, the Beloved of my Father?”

As I read this I came under deep conviction with a deeper burden for the
lost and wayward Christian. My prayer is that instead of fellow men and
women leaving home, this will be a year when the people of Browns
Summit and of the world come home. They come home to Jesus! They
begin to realize that they are indeed the Beloved of the Father!

So please join me in your private prayer time to lift up those who have
left home and those who have never come home, that they will, as the
prodigal son did, come home. The Savior awaits with open arms and a
loving heart.

Blessings,
Pastor Greg

The Monticello UCC sanctuary renovation is complete and beautiful! Pictures can
show off the new carpet, choir chairs, refurbished pulpit, added greenery and
lovely paint work; but to fully capture the open, welcome feel to the new configura-
tion and special touches added by talented and loving hands, please come and
see - and feel - for yourself!
The narthex has been rearranged and redecorated too. The old organ, seating
and greenery add to the welcoming feel as you enter the church’s front doors. This area is also now “home” to a
display of Dot Lambeth’s extraordinary Chrismon of the Last Supper. Look for more about Dot’s beautiful and
fascinating Chrismon display in next month’s newsletter.

Much of the renovation work was done by contracted agencies, but there was a lot of work done by Monticello
members who graciously shared time, talent, and a devotion to this church. Their special touches are evident
everywhere. To name—and thank— a few:
Jerry Smothers: who built the handrail on the side of the old pulpit to help navigate the 3 steps up to the altar
area. He also cleaned each pew and Pastor Greg cleaned all pew cushions; they look great!
The beautiful silk flower arrangements were designed by Nancy Bouck and were donated anonymously!
Work continues by the Board of Trustees (Lewis Smith, Jerry Smothers, Jimmy Dixon) to finish up the little
things such as electrical and lighting issues.
Those helping to replace and arrange furnishings after the renovation include Lewis and Laura Smith, Pastor
Greg, Lavinia Combs, Jerry Smothers and Nancy Bouck.
Nancy oversaw rearranging of the narthex as well as painting the upper walls (above molding) in the alter area.

BIBLE QUIZ
Why did the Pharisees protest one day
when Jesus’ disciples plucked and ate
grain directly from the field?
A. Because a banquet was awaiting
them; they didn’t want the disciples to
spoil their appetites.
B. Because it wasn’t the disciples’ field; they had no
right to the grain.
C. Because it was the Sabbath and such “work” was
prohibited.
D. Because the grain wasn’t yet ripe.
Answer: C (See Matthew 12:1-2.)
