DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS IX

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, Grade-IX students are expected to attain the following with at least
80% level of proficiency:
a. illustrate the law of cosine;
b. find the missing parts of triangle in a SAS case by applying the law of cosine; and
c. relate the concepts of law of cosine to real-life situations.
II. Subject Matter:
A. Topic: The Law of Cosine (M9GE-IVf-g-1)
B. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Material 9, pp. 497-503
C. Materials: Illustrations of Triangle, activity cards, pentel pen
D. Methodology: Inductive Method
E. Concept:
To find the missing measures of a triangle in SAS Case by applying the Law of
Cosine.
III. Learning Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparatory Activities

1. Prayer

Class, please stand up and let us pray,

Our Father… Amen.
Our Father … Amen.
2. Checking of Attendance

Good morning class.

Good morning Sir.
Class, are there any absentees for
today?
None sir.

Very good.

3. Checking of Assignment
Class, kindly pass your assignment to
the front silently.
4. Review
Okay, let us have a short review on
what we have discussed last meeting.
What was the topic last meeting?

Very good. Last meeting we

discussed about how to derive the law
of cosine. Sir, about derivation of the law of cosine.
Class, considering this triangle:

I have here a solution but as you can

observe, it is incomplete. I need
volunteers to complete the solution.

Answer:
Class, what was the solution all
about?

Very good.
And what are the other formula?
Very good.
It seems that you already mastered the
previous topic.

5. Motivation
Class, I have here a picture:

Do you know who they are?

Good.
They are asking for help because
there is somebody who’s planning to
attack at their base. Are you willing to
help them?

Sir, how to derive the law of cosine.

Very good.
Because helping someone is a visible
manifestation that you are willing to
accept on somebody’s task or Sir,
obligation as a sign of being
accountable.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Introduction of the Lesson

For you to be able to help them, you
need to know first the law of cosine.
And you also need to attain our
learning objectives.
Let us read the objectives:

2. Discussion Yes sir.

Class, they will like us to measure
their base if it would be sufficient
enough to defend against their enemy.
And they also want to know if they
need some more reservation.
Class, I have here the illustration: Yes sir.

What can you observe about the

illustration?

Very good.
As you can see in the illustration there a. illustrate the law of cosine;
is a given measurements and has also b. find the missing parts of triangle in a SAS case
a missing part by applying the law of cosine; and
Using the law of cosine, we are going c. relate the concepts of law of cosine to real-life
to find the missing part of the situations.
triangle.
Class, considering the given value,
what formula are we going to use?

Okay, very good.

This time, I have a solution but as you
can see, it has missing parts. I need
some volunteers to complete the
solution.

(Students have varied answers)

Class, who will fill the missing parts?

Sir,

Kindly explain on how you came up

with that answer.

(Students will participate)

Fantastic.
Answer:
3. Activity
Aside from their wall, they have also
some structure that they need us to
measure.
This time, we are going to have an
activity. I will group the class in four
groups. Each group will be given an
envelope. Inside the envelope are
your task to be done. And for the
presentation, you will choose one
member of the group to present your
output.

(Student will explain his/her answer)

Green Group:

Blue Group:

Pink Group:

For rating your output, please be

guided with the rubric:

The distance from Spratly Island to

China is about 3,029km and the
distance from Philippines to China is
about 3,096km. Now, we are going to
find the distance between Philippines
to Spratly Island.
This time, you’ll go back to your
group during in our activity. Each
group will solve the problem then the
first group who’ll finish solving the
problem will show their solution on
the board. If the solution is correct,
members of the group will be given
an additional points in our quiz later.

Therefore, based on the solution that

we had, we now conclude that Spratly

Answer:

Yes sir.

Solution:

b 2=a2 +c 2−2 ac ( cosB )

b 2=(3,029)2 +¿
b 2=9174841+9585216−2 ( 9377784 ) cos ⁡( 40 °)
b 2=18760057−18755568 ¿
b 2=18760057−18755568( 0.766)
b 2=18760057−14366765.09
b 2=4393291.912
Yes sir.
