Apart from having great distinction of being most perfectly structured and computer friendly language and having rich and vast literature, Samskrit was also the lingua franca and medium of academic activities in India. As a result whatever Indian mind has conceived, deliberated and innovated, the same has been translated into expression through Samskrit language. For this reason, it contains tremendous amount of knowledge pertaining to several disciplines like mathematics, natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences and technology besides arts and Humanities. It has played the most important role in integrating India into one nation. Unfortunately, after English usurped the role of Samskrit the unbroken tradition of thousands of years became weak in its linkages. But fortunately enough it is still enjoying the love, concern and relevance in the minds of entire mass of population in India and abroad. In this background necessity arose to launch Samskrit learning through nonformal methods with a view to keep its tradition alive and also integrate the nation through it. Rashtriya Samskrit Sansthan has felt that itis its duty to bring out self-study material of Samskrit to meet the needs of people at a distance. A far reaching project of launching five-level Samskrit self-study programme is the result of the realisation of responsibility stated above. Thus Samskrita Svadhyaya Yojana came into existence. OBJECTIVES, First Level : At this level effort is made to make the students speak a few sentences which are useful in day to day context and also write Samskrit through Devanagari script. Ittakes care of elementary skill in learning Samskrit. Second Level : At this level emphasis is given to make the students able to express all : important ideas related to the world around and to improve his capacity to ‘express slightly complicated expressions. Third Level At this level attention is paid to improve the language learning skills towards greater perfection and to lead them to understand simple literary material. Fourth Level : Atthis level higher mode of learning is provided along with study of slightly higher level literary master pieces. Attempt also is made to make students to write literary Samskrit and idioms of literary expression. Fifth Level 1 At this level attempt is made to increase the abilities of students in understanding and expressing spoken as well as literary Samskrit from all its aspects. Necessary grammatical inputs have also been provided at this level. The students are expected to be thoroughly equipped to understand the Samskrit literature and other books with the help of commentaries at the end of this level. FIRST LEVEL : ELIGIBILITY This study material is designed to learn Samskrit without the help of a teacher. No prior ‘Samskrit knowledge is required at this level. STUDY MATERIAL OF FIRST LEVEL i is helps to learn Devnagari script. 2.The Main book :Vakyavyavaharah i ‘ ___ This book is designed as a distinct one from the point of view of its style, the number of exercises attached to every lesson, gradation of language components and also points of attention. This is the main book of the first level. It is designed to teach Samskrit through ‘Samskrit from the beginning with the help of pictures, diagrams and exercises. Itis totally | written ina communicative style. : 3. Supplementary Reading Material : Vakyavistarah While points of teaching introduced and taught on the basis of single and unconnected sentences in the main book, an attempt is made in this book to use the same points of teaching in narrative sentences with appropriate linkages. The students are given the advantage of additional vocabulary in this book. 4. Supplementary Reading Material : Sambhashanam While Vakyavistarah is supplementary reading material in the form of narration this is in the form of communicative dialogue pertaining to various episodes of day to day life. This is designed to impress the students with natural expression and also to improve their communicative skills. The advantage of introducing some new vocabulary is significant feature of this book 5. Appendices : Parisishtam i, Uttaradeepika-I (Key to the Main Book-Vakya Vyavaharah) i. Uttaradeepika -II (Key to the Supplementary Reading Material Vakya Vistarah) - iii, Shabda Kosha (Glossary of Words including Verbs in Hindi and English) iv. Dhatu Roop Talika (Chart showing the forms of verbs in four Lakaras along with some important Kridantas. Vv. __ Shabda Roopani (Paradigms of the nouns used) INSTRUCTIONS : The attention of the students is drawn to the following important factors:- Serious and concentrated attention may be given to every exercise that is given in Vakyavyavahara and Vakyavistara. You are required to answer all the exercises on your ‘own without taking the help of key. You may better use pencil in filing the blanks. You may compare your answers with the key provided and make self assessment. After consulting the key you may do the exercises once again on your own without referring the key. We feel that the package of this first level material would encourage the lovers of Samskr and those who are interested in Samskrit. The present material is the outcome of ser ‘ing and strenuous working. However, its utility and compatibiliy ito be judged iser-students.
