Liminality means the threshold, a condition between two period of active social participation, a

transitional state from a current letter grading system to a SALT (Student as Learner – Teacher )
initiative which works on the principal of equality and invites the members of the college
(faculty and students) to interact as teachers , learner and colleagues.

This initiative will invite the students and teachers to enter into a liminal state , to cross the
threshold among established parent teacher relationship and strive to support alternative methods
to current grading system and learning opportunities.

SALT will place students as consultants in the program where they can hold generative dialogue
about teaching and learning experience. It will be based on multidimensional feedback that
includes the feedback from students to teacher as well as teacher to students.

1. Students will be given multidimensional feedback about their strengths and weakness and
point out the areas that needs improvement and a process to improve the areas which are
weak.

2. Students will also be able to provide the teachers the multidimensional feedback for the
current teaching experience which will enhance the learning experience of student. For
eg: student can have dialogue with teacher to provide more emphasis on certain topics as
he is improving in that area.

3. This initiative will strengthen the basic conviction of student voice because they have
unique perspectives on learning and teaching they should be given opportunities to
reshape their education.

4. It will remove the conventional parent – teacher relationship where students are hesitant
to share their views with teacher about learning experience. Since students will be made
free of grading system, they will be more honest to their professors and the relationship
will be multidimensional instead of current one sided.

5. This will make classrooms more democratic, they will learn the importance of
recognizing powers and bringing different perspectives into more democratic dialogue, to
bring together the insights of learning experience and how they can improve it together.
6. Students will have to go through a more practical approach to improve their skills, like
they have to prove when they go for taking a driving license.
Changes in Teachers

1. Teachers will avoid the certain viewpoints they have developed over the time that certain
students are weak due to low grading.

2. They will indulge in generative dialogue with students on improving themselves and
learning about their teaching experiences

3. The course sessions will be more productive focusing on the feedback provided by the
students.

Changes in Students

1. Student will become more responsible towards their education. They will be indulged in
asking questions to their faculty about the weak areas and how they can improve and
more strengthen their strengths.

2. Students will become better students and start stretching themselves to learn more and
beyond their capacity, which will let them learn new topics and opportunities.

3. Students will have more respect for their professors and will build a strong relationship
instead on conventional Guru- Disciple relationship.
