Flag Chain

1.Grab a paperclip of
either red or white
paper.
2.Write your name on the
back of each piece in the
paper clip.
3.Each piece has a section
of the Pledge of
Allegiance written on it. You must put
them in the correct order.
4. Then you are going to glue the piece
together to create a chain with all the
pieces.

History of The Pledge
of Allegiance
Francis Bellamy
Francis Bellamy wrote The Pledge of
Allegiance for the 400th anniversary of
Columbus Day. The first appearance of the
Pledge was in The Youth’s Companion
magazine in 1892. The Pledge of Allegiance
was written to promote patriotism, which
means support for one’s country.

Changes to The Pledge


The Pledge of Allegiance was originally named the
“Bellamy Salute” after the writer. Also, the original words
were:
”I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for
which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and
justice for all.”
There were several other revisions, or changes, to the
wording and name of the Pledge until 1954, when it was
officially renamed and worded the way we know it today.
