Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the
student’s field of study.
While I agree that universities should require students to take courses that are not their major, the requirement is still a matter of debate. To take courses out of students’ field of study can not only broaden students’ horizon, but also help students to discover more potentials on their career path. For example, as an economic major student, it is not until I took an elective subject about creative industry that I found out I can also combine my profession with passion, which is movie, to work in film industry. Another advantage of requiring students to take courses outside their field of study is that it could help students to be multi- skilled and well-rounded, which can definitely facilitate the team work with their future colleges. For instance, if the students with computer science background have the basic knowledge about financial aspect, they can have a better cooperation with the colleges in accounting department. Being multi-skilled can further benefit the students’ career when they are promoted to management position, which requires executive ability. If the students are also familiar with the field out of their study, they can definitely make a more comprehensive decision. Some people might argue that requiring students to take a variety if courses outside their field of study will distract them from studying their major. As far as I’m concerned, this issue is simply the matter of requirement. If the schools only require students to take at least two courses outside of their field before graduation, it won’t be such a burden.
In my opinion, the universities should require students to take courses outside of
their field of study for the benefits mentioned above. However, the course requirement shouldn’t take up too much time of the students in order to provide them with much flexibility to learn what they want.
