ETHICS MOMENT
Attempted bribery
A complaint was received about attempted bribery at one of the project office in
India.

Who was involved?

The person involved in attempting the bribery is employed by a contractor working
on this project.

What exactly happened?

During a routine visit to the project site, the contractor employee attempted to bribe
our staff by offering cash.

Reason for bribery?

The employee who was approached is working on this project since considerable
period and he has undergone the Compliance & Ethics training. He is doing a great
job by flagging up poor workmanship by the contractor; which was resulting in re-
work for the contractor, ultimately leading to additional expenditure.

6
Attempted bribery
What was done right?

• Staff refused to get bribed

• Staff informed the Compliance & Ethics department
• Staff co-operated with the investigating team

How serious is this issue?

Since Louis Berger operates in USA and UK, we are obliged to adhere to Anti-
bribery regulations of both these countries. The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
(FCPA - USA) and the UK Bribery Act (UKBA – UK).

The above regulations prohibit all Louis Berger employees from indulging in any
acts of bribery, with a government of a private official.

Henan aur Main (हे नन और मैं)

• My story was based on a monologue by a 13

year old boy, it was based on the description of
his friendship with a girl living next door, named
Henan. The boy told the story of those
unfortunate days when My Lai became a victim
of atrocities by American Soldiers during the
Vietnam war.

• On 16th March 1968 American soldiers shot

down the entire My Lai village. To a hunch more
than 400 Men, Women and Children were
brutally murdered in this barbaric Massacre.

• The war broke out in 1954 and continued till

1975.

• More than 3 million people (including over

58,000 Americans) were killed in the Vietnam
War, and more than half of the dead were
Vietnamese civilians.

‘relationship category’.

• To my surprise it stood out first and I

was called by the organisers to read
out the same from BLF 2020 stage.

• I never imagined that the audience

and jury will love this sort of serious
tale but they did.

Business Etiquette – Emails at Work
Do’s of Email Etiquette
• Ensure that the “To” field includes only those to
whom the email is specifically addressed, who
would need to take specific action, who
particularly need to be appraised, etc.

• Only include those in the “cc” list who really

need to be included in the email conversation.
There is no need to copy the whole wide world
in the “cc” list

• The subject in the “subject” field should be

clear and pertinent

• Be concise and to the point.

• Use professional language throughout a

business email. For example, “Hey you guys“
should be avoided.

19
Do’s of Email Etiquette
• Standard Signature Format should be used, one for
new emails, the other (shorter) version for replies. This
is mandatory. Prashant emails this requirement on a
regular and frequent basis

• Use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation.

• Use standard fonts, avoiding “fancy” fonts

• If you receive an email that is addressed to you,

please respond in a prompt manner. If your reply is
expected to take longer, inform the sender accordingly

• Proof-read your email before you hit the “Send” button,

including the “To” and “cc” lists

• Include references in your email to any attachments,

clearly explaining why they are being attached

• When forwarding emails, provide a brief description of

the conversation so far, and the action expected

20
Don’ts of Email Etiquette
• Emails should not be used in place of face-to-face or
telephone conversations

• Avoid “bcc”ing people in emails. It is not in line with the

policy of open, transparent communication

• Never reply to an email in an impetuous, emotional

and harsh manner. In such situations, compose the
email, cool down, and then send it out in a cool and
level-headed manner, sticking to professional points

• Do not use abbreviations. An email is not an SMS

• Do not Forward confidential messages which are

addressed specifically to you.

• Do not introduce new topic in the middle of a existing

mail thread.

• Do not include personal email IDs of LB staff in any

official mails
• Do not forward official emails to personal email IDs.

• Do not use GC or Client specific email IDs for LB-

specific communication and vice-versa.
