 2001
o Aug. 26 - 7.9 earthquake in India; 20,000 people died
o Decline of natural resources and species in the Philippines
 2002
o May 30 - dynamite fishing in the Philippines which put the native coral reefs on
the verge of collapse.
o Nov. 19 – 1.02 million gallons of oil spill in Atlantic Ocean near Spain
 2004
o Earthquake causes large tsunamis in the Indian Ocean, killing nearly a quarter of
a million people.
 2005
o Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma cause widespread destruction and
environmental harm to coastal communities in the US Gulf Coast region
 2008
o Cyclone Nargis makes landfall over Myanmar, causing widespread destruction
and killing over 130,000 people.
o Mar 18 - NASA reported that the thickest Arctic ice is melting according to
satellite data.
 2010
o Earthquake in Haiti destroyed vital infrastructure and kills over 100,000 people.

across the world.

pollute the gulf.
 2011
o Tsunami in Japan An earthquake and later a tsunami hit the continent on March
11, 2011. After this disaster, nuclear power plants in Japan have been releasing
radiation due to damage from the earthquake.
o World human population reached the 7 billion mark.
o Tornadoes of 2011, a series of destructive and record-breaking tornado
outbreaks and tornado outbreak sequences strike the heartland of the United
States, killing hundreds of people
o May 29 - In the Philippines workers cleaned up more than 750 tons of fish that
have died and rotted on fish farms in Taal Lake near Taal volcano south of
Manila. Scientists said the onset of the rainy season led to a sharp drop in water
temperatures depleting oxygen levels.
 2012
o Hurricane Sandy devastates the eastern third of North America,
from Florida to Quebec, and from Michigan to Nova Scotia, as the largest Atlantic
basin hurricane in history.
o Aug 1 - In the Philippines a waste spillage at the Philippines' largest gold
threatened to contaminate one of the country's largest rivers. On Aug 3 the
government said the spillage at the Padcal mine has been contained.
 2013
o Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) ravages the central Philippines, with explosive
strengthening and a record-setting wind-speed at landfall of 195 miles per hour
(314 km/h).
o Bohol Earthquake
o A multivortex tornado touches down in El Reno, Oklahoma and grows to a
record-setting width of 2.6 miles (4.2 km).
o Minamata Convention on Mercury is signed, committing nations to reducing
mercury poisoning.
 2014
o Oct 24 - Philippines’ Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario said the US will pay the
Philippines 87 million pesos ($1.9 million) for damage caused by the USS
Guardian minesweeper that ran aground on a protected coral reef in January,
2013.
 2015
o A global climate change pact is agreed at the COP 21 summit, committing all
countries to reduce carbon emissions for the first time
o Oct 23 - Philippine aviation authorities said haze from Indonesian forest fires has
spread to the southern and central Philippines, disrupting air traffic and
prompting warnings for residents to wear face masks.
 2016
o 150 nations meeting at the UNEP summit in Rwanda agree to phase out
hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), as an extension to the Montreal Protocol.
o Jul 7 - The Philippines ordered the suspension of operations at two nickel ore
mines for environmental violations and halted the issuance of exploration
permits as a nationwide crackdown led by a new mining minister begins.
 2017
o Feb 3 - In the Philippines environment secretary Gina Lopez ordered 23 of the
country’s 41 mines to close permanently and another five to suspend operations
indefinitely for alleged environmental violations.
o Feb 12 - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said he would not stand in the way
of his minister's decision to close several mines in the southern Philippines after
he saw the damage they had done to the environment.
o Leyte Earthquake
o  Feb 14 - In the Philippines environment secretary Gina Lopez cancelled 75
mining projects on the grounds that they would harm ecologically sensitive
areas.
 2018
o Oct 26 - In the Philippines boatloads of tourists sailed to Boracay island, which
officials reopened to visitors after a six-month closure to clean waters the
president had called a "cesspool" due to years of overcrowding, partying and
neglect.
 2019
o May 22 - A spokesman said that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has moved
to have truckloads of garbage that Filipino officials say were illegally shipped to
the Philippines years ago be forcibly shipped back to Canada.
o  May 31 - The Philippines shipped 69 containers of what its officials called
illegally transported garbage back to Canada.
