ABSTRACT
Title: The Effects of Counterfeited Beauty Products
Researchers: Regencia, Rio, Ramos, Punzalan
Year: 2019
Adviser: Czarah Jane Miranda
The Problem
The study aimed to assess the effect of counterfeited beauty products to the
body when it is used.
Research Methodology
The sampling method used for this study is simple random sampling where
interviewing is its primary data gathering instrument. There were a total of 3
random respondents chosen from Cabuyao City, Laguna.
Findings
Based on the gathered data, counterfeited products attracts consumers
because of its affordable price and each respondents shows their own reasons such
as to show it off because of its imitated popular brand, it is accessible and it is the
only choice.
Conclusions
The study revealed that counterfeited beauty products are cheaper than the
original and it is accessible because it can be found and bought in many shops.
However, it has a lot of side effects that could harm the human body once it is used
Recommendations
Based on the conclusions made, the researchers kindly recommend to other
researchers to look at the other side of the story about counterfeited beauty
products. The researchers also recommend to not use fake or counterfeited
products because it is not advisable to use such product under any circumstances
due to its potential risks.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

STRUCTURE AND RATIONALE OF THE STUDY

Background of the Study

Counterfeited goods are found all around the world where some people buy
them without even knowing that they are fake. These goods pose risk to people’s
health where thousands of individuals die because of their effects each year.
(IRACM, n.d).

The researchers will show you a brief history of counterfeiting. One of the
earliest times where counterfeiting happened is in the 5th century A.D., where the
coin counterfeiter Alexander the Barber is caught and forced to work for the
Emperor (PBS, n.d). In 1690, the couple Thomas and Anne Rogers shave edges off
silver coins. In 1739 Benjamin Franklin printed counterfeit resistant bills. In 1865, in
the United States, one-third of the circulating money during the Civil War was
counterfeit. 2010, Peru became the world's number one counterfeit bill distributors.

Like money, cosmetics can also be counterfeited with the use of imitating
popular brands and to trick others with their looks.

One of the reasons why many people buy these products regardless of their
risks is because their prices are commonly cheap. It can be difficult to find these
products if people don't know what they are looking for. Some letters in the text or
the use of font styles may be shaped or spaced differently. However, they are
deliberately made to look genuine to fool or deceive their buyers.

When talking about cosmetics, people are referring to substances and

preparations other than medicines, and are intended for external use (UIBM, n.d).

1
Industries all around the world lose large amounts to counterfeiters. These
losses aren't only affecting the producers of authentic/genuine items, but they also
involve social costs. The consumers receive low-quality goods at an exceeded price
and are sometimes exposed to health and safety dangers. It is estimated that trade
in counterfeited goods is now worth more than five percent of worlds trade (OECD,
n.d).

Rationale

To spread awareness. People tolerate fake beauty products without

knowing their harmful effects. If the consumers will be aware of their damaging
outcome, they wouldn’t condone fake beauty products.

To inform the customer to be aware of the differences between the

original and fake beauty products. Most of the consumers today are blinded to
purchase these products because by comparing its prices, they have a huge
difference. The original beauty products are expensive while the fake products are
cheaper.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS AND OBJECTIVES

Statement of the problem

This study aims to answer the researchers’ questions: What are fake beauty
products and their effects? What are the differences between the counterfeited
products and the original products? Why do people still use these products
regardless of their risks?

Objectives of the study

The main objective of this study is to know the effects of using fake beauty
products. In addition, this study also aims:

 To know what fake beauty products are.

2
 To determine the differences between the fake and the original beauty
product.
 To find out the reason why people are still using fake beauty products.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

 To consumers. For them to spot the differences between the counterfeited

and original product. In addition, to help them be a smart consumer.
 To the millennials. To inform them about the harmful and dangerous effect
of fake products once they use it with their lack of awareness.
 To future researchers. To help them have references regarding this topic. In
addition to that, this paper can help them improve their work.

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS

This study will focus on counterfeit products and fake beauty products
excluding skin care products. The research also includes harmful effects to the
health of the consumers, to the economy, and the differences between the fake and
the original.

The researchers will only be conducting the study in Cabuyao City, Laguna.
The study will be limited in terms of its respondents. Researchers will interview only
three to five selected individuals in the area that is buying counterfeited products in
Divisoria. The study will also focus on all American fake beauty products sold only in
Divisoria.

4
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
WHAT IS A COUNTERFEITED PRODUCT?
According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, counterfeit means, ‘made to
look like an exact copy of something in order to trick people.'

In addition, counterfeits are illegal reproductions of a trademark or

registered brand, which are quite similar or identical to the authentic ones.
(Phau&Thea. 2009; Wilcox, Kim&Sen, 2008; Huynh, Giang&Wilson, Jonathan, 2014).
The counterfeit, identical in appearance, gives the impression of being the genuine
product from the real manufacturer. Of course, a fake or imitation is only
meaningful if the genuine article is well known and in demand. Most knockoffs are
luxury goods carrying a well-known trademark (Meyer, 2019). It also refers to an
intentional and calculated reproduction of a genuine article that has a purpose of
misleading the consumer into believing that he/she is buying the authentic product
itself (Barnier, 2014).

Counterfeiting is illegal, or a crime, involving the manufacturing or

distribution of goods under someone else's name, and without their permission.
These are generally made from lower quality components, in an attempt to sell a
cheap imitation of similar goods produced by brands consumers know and trust
(IACC, 2019).

According to Dunham (2017), there are top 10 products that are mostly
counterfeited, which are:

• Automotive and aerospace parts

• Labels and tags
• Computers and Accessories
• DVDs and CDs

5
• Pharmaceuticals
• Handbags and wallets
• Watches and jewelry
• Footwear
• Consumer electronics
• Apparel and accessories

What are the effects of counterfeited products on the economy?

Counterfeiting is a global phenomenon that has accompanied the rise to the

prominence of the acknowledged branded items. (Barnier, 2014). This will lead to
the economic decrease of the country such as:

• Lost tax revenue and economic activity

• Counterfeits support the wider black market
• Lost genuine employment
• Counterfeiting discourages innovation
• Lost foreign investment
• Staying safe against counterfeiting (Williams, 2018)

Counterfeited Products in the Philippines

In the Philippines, a counterfeited product is overrated even if they are not

produced locally; people keep on buying them because they are cheap more
practical.

As of 2017, there is P8.2 billion worth of counterfeit and pirated goods that
were seized by various agencies under the National Committee on Intellectual
Property Rights (NCIPR).

Compared to the P1.4 billion worth of pirated goods confiscated in the first
semester last year, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) said

6
this year's seizure value jumped by 530 percent. “Surpassing the full-year, 2017
seizure is a matter of course given Intellectual Property of the Philippines (IPOPHL)
and NCIPR's intensified campaign to restrain the spread of fake goods since the
beginning of the year. Any acts of piracy are damaging not only to the local economy
but also to the industries we cultivate. In addition, the investors with valuable
intellectual property, and the government which loses revenue because of these
fake goods,” IPOPHL director general Josephine Santiago said (Desiderio, 2018)

What will happen if you got caught selling counterfeited products in the
Philippines?

According to the Article 10 of the Republic Act No. 7394 or the Consumer Act
of the Philippines, when a consumer product is found to be injurious, unsafe or
dangerous, it shall, after due notice and hearing, make the appropriate order for its
prohibition, recall, or seizure from public sale or distribution. That is the sound
discretion of the department if it may declare a consumer product to be imminently
injurious, unsafe or dangerous. The order is an immediate recall, ban, or seizure
from public sale or distribution, in which case, the seller, distributor, manufacturer
or producer thereof will afford a hearing within forty-eight hours (P.A, 2017)

Counterfeited Beauty Products

Counterfeited beauty products are simply products that are sold in the
market with a very cheap price and contains beyond-harmful ingredients like
cyanide, arsenic, rat poison, urine and lead that are definitely shouldn’t be in your
household, much less your makeup. (Instyle Staff, 2017) These ingredients can cause
allergic reactions to your skin and health infections on your body. You may know the
differences between the counterfeit products and on the authentic one if you will
look closely at the quality and the packaging of the products.

7
What is Beauty Products?

According to Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, Cosmetics or beauty product

means, ‘a substance (such as cream, lotion, or powder) that you put on your face or
body to improve your appearance.

As indicated by Intertek (2016) Cosmetic products is subject to legislative

requirements in many countries, among which the European Union (EU) is
considered the most active in regulatory development.

American Beauty Products

1. COLOURPOP
Based on About Us (n.d), Colourpop was founded at the year 2014 by Seed
Beauty. This product prides to be a wallet-friendly and bunny approved.
2. URBAN DECAY
As eloquently stated by Yong S. (2018, January 23), Urban Decay is one of
those beauty brands that “inspires the kind of foaming at the mouth meltdown
reactions”. It started in 1996 from the brand’s co-founder Wende Zomnir. Now, the
global makeup brand is owned by L’Oréal. They started as a reaction to the safe
color-scape at the makeup counters, and they became known for their rebellious
colorful riot. In the past two decades, it expanded to redefining neutrals while
maintaining its edge in the beauty community and gained a league of social media
fanfare.

3. MAC COSMETICS

According to Our Story (n.d), MAC Cosmetics is the world's leading professional
makeup authority because of their unrivaled expertise in makeup artistry. This
brand is for all ages, all races, and all genders. This makeup started life in Toronto,

8
Canada owned by Estee Lauder Companies and founded by Frank Toskan and Frank
Angelo in 1994. This brand remained committed to developing new categories, new
products and over 58 collections per year. Mac Cosmetics will continue to serve the
demand of the consumers and professional makeup artists alike.

4. MAYBELLINE

As indicated by Maybelline (n.d) Maybelline is established in the US. This

brand’s products are primarily cult mascaras such as colossal, distinctive packaging,
which became this brand’s trademark. It also has cosmetics for different skin types
and all skin types. Maybelline introduces interesting new products and improves the
existing products that can make its popularity around the world.

5. KYLIE COSMETICS

As mentioned by Katsampiri A. (2018), Kylie cosmetics was created by Kylie

Jenner in 2015. In 2014, the owner signed up in Seed Beauty that could help the
brand ground up. The products were inspired by Kylie's childhood insecurity about
her lip size. In addition to that, Kylie Cosmetics is a cruelty-free company. Now, Kylie
is collaborating with Jordyn Wods. The headquarters of the company are in Oxnard,
California, United States.

Fake American Beauty Products

According to HM Team (2018), the majority of dangerous makeup products

are made in China, allowing vendors to ship those harmful cosmetics around the
globe through online sites like eBay and Amazon, etc. In the U.S., CBS News reports
that counterfeit products have been purchased from places like street markets in
downtown Los Angeles.

The market is becoming flooded with cheaper alternatives to name-brand

makeup that without close inspection, look the same at a fraction of the price.

9
A police department task force seized almost a million dollars worth of
counterfeit/fake cosmetics after raiding 21 locations in Los Angeles downtown’s
Fashion District. The bust in Santee Alley found fake makeups similar to popular
brands like Urban Decay, NARS, MAC, Kylie Cosmetics and others (Hernandez,
2017).

Fake American Beauty Products in the Philippines

The Ecowaste Coalition bought 27 different brands of Lipsticks in Divisoria

where 11 of them were found to contain lead content. The result of their
investigation confirmed that one of these lipsticks bought in this area were fake
MAC products (Faye Orellana, 2018).

Numerous stalls in Divisoria also sell Kylie lip kits, L'Oreal Anastasia, and
Urban Decay that is counterfeited or fake (Kate Alvarez, 2016)

The group goes to Baguio City and found toxic cosmetic products like
S’Zitang that are manufactured from China and sold by Pao-Pao Herbal and Beauty
products located at the Maharlika Livelihood Complex. Fake branded MAC Mariah
Carey lipsticks are also sold at the Maharlika Area by Jian Ling General Merchandise
(Maria Elena Catajan, 2018)

The group also listed adulterated and misbranded lipsticks that contain high
doses of lead and other substances that pose risk to human health. These products
are Qianxiu, MAC, Baby Lips, and Monaliza Series (Catalina Ricci S. Madarang, 2019)

The case looks a bit flat. The color is lighter and the case does not sparkle
when moved under the light. The font style also appears bolder and thicker than the
original.

Figure 2: Fake Urban Decay eyeshadow palette vs. Authentic Urban Decay
eyeshadow palette

The container of the original is a light metal while the container of the fake is
hard plastic. The brush of the original palette comes in flat and round, while the fake
brush is both round brushes. The most distinct difference is the shade of the
eyebrows.

11
Figure 3: Fake Anastacia Liquid Lipstick vs. Authentic Anastacia liquid lipstick

The font of the fake is a bit bolder than the original liquid lipstick. The
"Infinity" logo above the cap on the original tube is thinner while the logo on the
fake is rounder. The fake smells better than the original. The fake also dries quickly
and stays put while the original one smudge even after a few minutes of applying it.

EFFECTS OF COUNTERFEITED BEAUTY PRODUCTS

Counterfeit cosmetics contain dangerous ingredients and are manufactured

in unhygienic conditions and places that may result to skin allergic reactions and
health risks (NeuroTags, 2018).

According to Roberton (2017), these cosmetics may contain mercury,

cyanide, arsenic, paint-stripper, and feces which are very harmful to the body.
Which in some cases may result to rashes, eye irritation, or worse, a serious
poisoning that can affect your organs, causing heart problems, lungs infection and
nervous system failure (Magdy, 2017).

12
In addition, counterfeited beauty products can also cause; headaches, hair
Problems, acne, infertility, premature aging, hormonal imbalance, cancer, and skin
discoloration says Daily Hunt (2017)

Why do people use Counterfeited Products?

Chaudhary (2016) stated that low self-esteem, peer and social pressure and
stocking ego are some of the reason for the people to use counterfeited branded
goods.

Zavertailo (2018) also stated that people buy fake products because;
1. They are cheap
2. People have pressure or desire to follow the latest trends
3. They don’t actually care that the product is fake
4. They don’t even know that they bought a fake product

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
To establish the very framework of this study, two theories were cited - The
Theory of Reasoned action and The Assimilation Theory

According to the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), a person’s behavior is

determined by its behavioral intention to perform such action. This intention is itself
determined by the person’s attitudes and based on or influenced by personal
feelings, taste or opinions.

It also stated that the attitude of a person towards a behavior is determined

by his beliefs on the consequences of this behavior, multiplied by his evaluation of
these consequences. Beliefs are defined by the person’s subjective probability that
performing a particular behavior will produce stimuli influence attitudes by
modifying the structure of the person’s beliefs. Moreover, behavioral intention is

13
also determined by the subjective norms that are themselves determined by the
normative beliefs of an individual and by his motivation to comply with the norms.
(Huang, 2017)

The Assimilation Theory is based on Festinger's (1957) dissonance theory.

Dissonance theory proposes that consumers make some kinds of awareness
between expectations about the product and the perceived product performance.
According to Anderson (1973), consumers seek to avoid the tension of unsuitable
elements by adjusting the awareness of the consumer about the given product.
Consumers can also reduce the tension resulting from a lack of compatibility or
similarity between expectations and product performance. Or by raising the level of
satisfaction by minimizing the relative importance of the disconfirmation
experienced (Inflibnet, N.d)

With the use of the two theories, the researchers will discover the main
reason behind the individual’s action of buying a counterfeit or fake product
regardless of the imitated product’s untested and unknown used materials that
might put the person’s life at risk.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The approach of this study is Correlational Research wherein the researchers

will explain the cause and effects of using counterfeited cosmetics. It will be used in
the research because it can show the relationship between two variables. In
addition, it can show more reasons for the researcher to study the research even
more.

It is also qualitative research because it is a scientific method of study that

gathers non- numerical data. Moreover, it will not rely on numbers and percentages
to clarify the study. The researchers that conducted this study will also choose
people to interview. Nevertheless, the researchers will only take the data about the
people’s opinions, insights, and personal experiences regarding the research to be
studied.

Locale of the Study

This study will be conducted in Cabuyao City, Laguna. The researchers are
going to find respondents that are buying counterfeited products in Divisoria.
Because Divisoria sells a low-cost product than original price. Therefore, there are
many fake products are available in this area.

16
Figure 4: Physical map of Divisoria, located in Tondo Manila

Respondents and Sampling

The researchers will need 3-5 respondents from Cabuyao City, Laguna to
share their opinions, and experiences in using counterfeited beauty products that
they bought from Divisoria, located in Tondo, Manila. These experiences will help
the researchers for their study.

In gathering data from the respondents, the researchers will use the simple
random type of sampling where the researchers will choose 3-5 random
respondents in the area that has experience and opinions regarding the topic.

Research Instrument

The researchers are going to use two methods to collect data that the
researchers need to support in their study about “The Effects of Using Counterfeited
Beauty Products”. The two methods that the researchers will use are interviewing
and transcribing.

The first method is the interview where it is in a set of oral questions. The
researchers will collect data through oral and face-to-face talks with randomly
selected participants in Divisoria located in Tondo, Manila. The researchers will use
questions that will be based on the researchers’ question in this study.

17
The second method is transcribing wherein the data collected in the
interview will be recorded and directly transcribed so that there would be no details
and answers will be left that might damage the study. Since the Philippines’ mother
language is Filipino, the researchers are going to translate the data into a general
language, which is English so that it would be easier to understand the study.

Data Analysis

After gathering the data, the researchers are going to classify the reason of
why the respondent is buying counterfeited product and its effects after the
respondent used it. Then, the researchers are going to differentiate it from each
other by making a table that will identify the data that has been gathered.

CHAPTER V

RESEARCH IMPLICATIONS

The following chapter presents the summary of the research, the conclusions
based from the analyzed data, and the recommendations for future researchers and
consumers to help them to understand the effects of counterfeited beauty products

Summary

1. The effects of using counterfeited beauty products cause irritation

to the face, making the skin reddish and itchy. They also cause irritation to
the eyes and making it teary
2. Based on the gathered data by the researchers, one of the reasons
why consumers buy counterfeited beauty products is because they are
cheaper. The data also shows reasons such as buying them to show it off, it
is accessible, and lastly, it is the only choice of the consumer.
3. In the differences between the fake and the original makeup
products, fake products are sticky and not easy to apply. The fake product
also has foul smell and its color is different than the original product. The
original product is pigmented and glittery while the fake product does not
have such qualities.

22
Conclusion

Major findings of this study were based from the data analyzed in the
previous chapter, which presumes that the effects of the counterfeited products
affects the body of the consumers.

1. The researchers concluded that using counterfeited beauty products

could harm the consumer
2. The researchers concluded that counterfeited product are cheaper,
attracting consumers to buy them because of their price and because of their
imitated brand names.
3. The researchers concluded that there are many differences between
the fake and the genuine makeup products such as the fake product’s color,
pigment, glitter, packaging and smell that deceive the consumers.

Recommendations

1. The researchers kindly recommend to other researchers to look for the

procedure on making counterfeited beauty products.
2. The researchers kindly recommend to other researchers that will have
a topic to focus on products that are sold in MUMUSO since there are some
people that are saying that the products sold in MUMUSO is counterfeited.
3. The researchers recommend to make a research about counterfeited
Korean beauty products since they are in demand nowadays.

Interviewer: Good Day! May I borrow your time to have an interview with me about
you, using counterfeited make up that you bought from Divisoria?
Clarisse: Sure! Why not?
Interviewer: So, name and age please.

Clarisse: Clarisse Regencia, 19 years old from Cabuyao City, Laguna.

Interviewer: What are the effects of fake make up products that occurred after you
used it?

Clarisse: I used Kylie Cosmetics Liquid Foundation and my fake got irritated, it
became itchy and had some redness. Also, it has a foul smell.

Interviewer: What are the differences between the fake and original product that
you noticed?

Clarisse: The fake make up is sticky and it is hard to apply because it is tacky. And I
haven’t used the original one. Hehe

Interviewer: Last question, what is the reason that made you buy fake beauty
products?

Clarisse: Cheap, and I also have no choice and lastly, I really need make up that
time.

Interviewer: Okay. Thank you so much for your cooperation. That’s all the question
I got. HAHA!

Clarisse: No problem. I got you!
