SAFETY
RECOGNIZE SAFETY INFORMATION

• These are the SAFETY ALERT SYMBOLS.

• When you see these symbols on your machine or in

this manual, be alert to the potential for personal
injury.
• Follow recommended precautions and safe operating
practices.

SA-688

001-E01A-0001

UNDERSTAND SIGNAL WORDS

• On machine safety signs, signal words designating the

degree or level of hazard - DANGER, WARNING, or
CAUTION - are used with the safety alert symbol.

• DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation

which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious
injury.
• WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious
injury.
• CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation
which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate
injury.
• DANGER or WARNING safety signs are located
near specific hazards. General precautions are listed
on CAUTION safety signs.
• Some safety signs don’t use any of the designated
signal words above after the safety alert symbol are
occasionally used on this machine.
SA-1223

• CAUTION also calls attention to safety messages in this

manual.

• To avoid confusing machine protection with personal

safety messages, a signal word IMPORTANT indicates a
situation which, if not avoided, could result in damage to
the machine.

• NOTE indicates an additional explanation for an

element of information.

SAFETY
FOLLOW SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

• Carefully read and follow all safety signs on the machine

and all safety messages in this manual.

• Safety signs should be installed, maintained and

replaced when necessary.

• If a safety sign or this manual is damaged or missing,

order a replacement from your authorized dealer in the
same way you order other replacement parts (be sure
to state machine model and serial number when
ordering).
SA-003

• Learn how to operate the machine and its controls

correctly and safely.

• Allow only trained, qualified, authorized personnel to

operate the machine.

• Keep your machine in proper working condition.

• Unauthorized modifications of the machine may impair

its function and/or safety and affect machine life.

• The safety messages in this SAFETY chapter are

intended to illustrate basic safety procedures of
machines. However it is impossible for these safety
messages to cover every hazardous situation you may
encounter. If you have any questions, you should first
consult your supervisor and/or your authorized dealer
before operating or performing maintenance work on the
machine.

• This manual contains only the parts related to the Super

Long Arm operation. Be sure to thoroughly read and
understand the Operator’s Manual for the Standard
Machine (base machine) before operating this machine.

PRECAUTIONS FOR OPERATION

1. PRECAUTIONS FOR OPERATION

IMPORTANT: Beware of the following points when operating the machine.

1. This machine has been designed so that only the H22 super long front attachment can be installed. Don’t
replace the front attachment with the standard front attachment.
2. Never remove the additional counterweight installed on the counterweight.
3. Don’t apply this machine to general civil engineering works other than light duty work such as dredging rivers
and lakes, finishing slope surfaces, excavating heaped soil, etc.. (The density of excavation objects should be
3
1800 kg/m or less.)
4. Observe the instructions mentioned below. Failure to do so may result in damage to the base machine and
the front attachment.
• Avoid excavating gravel and compacted soil.
• Use a bucket as much as possible in excavation work. Never attempt to excavate ground using swing power
or to engage in grading work.
• Don’t allow the front attachment to come in contact with piled soil, trees and/or immovable objects during
swing operation.
• Never use the bucket to compact and/or demolish ground/ buildings.
• Be sure to travel the machine in the slow (turtle) mode over rough terrain.
• Avoid raising the machine off the ground using the front attachment, moving the front attachment quickly, or
traveling the machine with the arm cylinder fully extended (maximum length) or retracted (minimum length).
Jack-up Method: When raising the machine off the ground, keep the angle between the boom and arm at
90 to 110°.
Travel Method: Retract the arm cylinder more than 50mm from the fully extended position, or use the stay
for transportation when traveling the machine.
5. Operate the boom and the arm as slow as possible. Failure to do so may cause the machine to lose stability.
6. Avoid sudden swing operation, possibly creating safety hazards.
7. When the arm cylinder is fully extended, if the arm sways, the arm may come in contact with the boom.
Operate the arm as slow as possible when the arm is extended close to the stroke end.
8. Lubricate the pins to be dipped in water during operation every day after completing the day shift.
9. This machine has been designed to install only the super long front attachment. Therefore, even though the
power mode switch is turned to the H/P (High Power) mode position, the H/P mode is not activated. This is
not a machine trouble. (Even though the power mode switch is turned to the H/P mode position, the power
mode remains in the P mode.)

CAUTION: The front attachment speed is set when the machine is shipped. If re-adjustment is
required, contact your nearest HITACHI dealer.

When the front attachment is not removed:

WARNING: As the stay is suddenly lowered,
carefully remove the stay pin.

1. Fully extend the bucket cylinder and slowly stop

operation.
2. Lower the whole front attachment and lower the boom
until the link guide slightly comes in contact with the
ground.

IMPORTANT: Perform this operation on level ground

without any obstructions. If the bucket
cylinder comes in contact with any
obstructions, cylinder may be damaged.

3. Remove the pin at boom side from the stay installed Stay
on the boom bottom. Lower the stay and lower the
boom by inching the boom downward until the bottom
end pin hole aligns with the arm bracket hole.

4. When the pin holes align, install the pin removed in

step 3. into the arm side in order to secure the stay.

IMPORTANT: Load, transport, and unload the machine

under this condition. If the stay is not M1V4-SL-011

used, the front attachment may be

damaged due to impacts developed
while transporting the machine on a
trailer.

5. Before loading the machine on to the trailer, lay a

rubber sheet on the trailer deck at the position where
the link guide will come in contact in order to protect
the trailer deck surface.

NOTE: 1. Without bucket

2. Lifting capacity of the ZAXIS series dose not exceed 75% of tipping load with the machine on firm,
level ground or 87% full hydraulic capacity.
3. The load point is the center-line of the bucket pivot mounting pin on the arm.
4. ∗ Indicates load limited by hydraulic capacity.
5. 0 m = Ground.
