FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part 2) (First Revision) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 30 September 1985, after the draft finalized by the Power Cables Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council 0.2 Experience has shown that it is possible to use crosslinked poly= ethylene (XLPE) insulated cables for the class of voltages coveret! hy this standard, in place of armoured insulated lead-sheathed 0.3: Thi 4 was originally published in 1973 whi in the country about manufacture of these types of cables was limited Since then, a considerable progress has been made and a number of manufacturers have come up. This standard has been revised to take into account the experience gained during manufacture of these cables in the country. The opportunity has also been utilized to align the format of this specification with other specifications for different types of cables 0.4 Particular attention is drawn to the limitations of the short-circuit ratings of the types of cable covered by this standard owing to the absence af the metallic sheath and the possible loss of electrical contact between the strands of the armour as a result of corrosion or the presence of compound between them or both. A separate standard about recommended short-circuit ratings of these types of cables is under preparation, 0.5 Attention is also drawn to the fact that the current ratings of the types of cable covered by this standard are different from those of the 1S; 7098 ( Part 2) - 1985 paper-insulated metal-sheathed cables. This standard does not inclu any data on the current ratings, but information on this aspect will be covered ia a separate Indian Standard later. In the meanwhile, users fare acivised to consult the manufacturers for information on this aspect. 0.6 ‘The correct type of cables shoul:! be selected for the system ‘keeping in view whether the system is earthed or unearthed Not =f should be eelized that ia an electric system where an eneih-feul is not autoun ically an promptly eliminated, the rxiea-stfenes on the inwvlavion of (N0 elaring the earth Faul rece the life ofthe cable to.a certain extent. Therefore, ih in vepected to bs ojeeater Gusta sften with a prolonged extthcauleste Iavicile to select the cables suitable for unesrched sytem 0.7 In the preparation of this standard assistance has been derived from TEC Publication 502 { 1983 ) ‘Extruded solid dielectric insulated power cables for rated voltages from I kV t 30 kV", issued by the Injernational Electrotechnical Commission, 0.8 For the purpose of ceciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shali be rounded off in accor‘lance with 1S: 2-1960*, ‘The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value shou! the same as that of the specified value in this standard "SECTION 1 GENERAL 1, SCOPE.
