Today’s society is different than decades ago. As we
often hear, change is inevitable. No society remains
the same all throughout its history. However, we
cannot identify a single factors behind this change.
Some sociologists attribute social change with
innovation which is defined as the development of
something new, whether an idea, a practice or a
tool.

Karl Marx believed that conflict is

the greatest agent of change
throughout history.
Cultural change is the
modification of a society through
innovation, invention, discovery,
or conflict with other societies.

Social change is the alteration of mechanism within

the social structure, characterized by changes in
cultural symbols, rules of behavior social,
organizations, or value systems.
Political change refers to a subject matter that is
constant flux. It deals not only with the major
processes of growth, decay, and breakdown but also
with a ceaseless ferment of adaptation and
adjustment or political system.
Political change highlights the
magnitude and variety of the
changes that occurred in the
world’s political system.
INNOVATION
Is the invention of something
new – an idea, a process, a
practice, a device, or a tool.

Although all innovations build on existing knowledge

and materials, they also go beyond that which
already exists.
Innovation also include:

* discoveries
* Hidden
* Unnoticed
* undescribed
* Uncovering something
Anthropologists Leslie White maintains that the rate
of change is tied to the size of the cultural base, the
number of preexisting inventions.
Example:
* First Airplane
* Gasoline Engine
* Rudder
* Glider
* Wheel
Actions of Leaders
- represent a trigger to social change. In a
general sense, a leader is someone who has the
power to influence others or who is in charge or in
command of a social situation.

According to Max Weber defined power as the

probability that an individual can realize his or her
will even against the resistance of others.
“the influence of an individual on an organization is
the elements of social power”
The individual can change an organization only if he
or she has it. Power is the ability to achieve one’s will
in relation to others. One’s ability often arises from
one’s position in an organization, but it also arises
from attractiveness, large number of followers,
wealth, weapons, intelligence or persuasive ability.
CONFLICT – often Social Conflict is defined as the
struggle for agency or power in society.

Social conflict or group occurs when two or more

actors oppose each other in social interaction,
reciprocally exerting social power in an effort to
attain scarce or incompatible goals and prevent the
opponent from attaining them.
Conflict
* Involve violence clashes
* public debate
* constructive
* unresponsive
* inefficient
