TRACTATUS MYTHOLOGICUS
Theorie und Methodik zur Erforschung von Mythen als Grund-
legung einer allgemeinen, transmedialen und komparatistischen
Stoffwissenschaft
[Tractatus mythologicus: Theory and Methods for the Study
of Myths]
The volume is a programmatic manifesto for the new series MythoS. The
author develops new methods – the hyleme analysis and the stratification
analysis – and applies them on mythological materials, reconstructing
myths as “Stoffe” and making them understandable in their polymorphic
nature. In this groundbreaking work, the author sets the stage for a general
theory of myth based on a new comprehensive, transmedial and comparative
Stoff-research.

Comprehensive and unique study (4 vols.) on type scenes and structural elements
in Graeco-Roman epic
International collaboration of over 50 researchers from 10 countries
This compendium tests the hypothesis that recognizable structural patterns and elements in epic narratives undergo
diverse variations and are frequently embedded in different novel contexts to convey a new meaning. These only
seemingly traditional and fixed recurring elements, as this study shows, are the source of and subject to innovation,
variation, and generic shifts. As the overall structure is familiar to the recipients, they notice even small alterations
and deviations from the traditional concept, and even more so the overlapping and crossing of generic elements.
Essays on ancient epic poetry, which form the body of the discussion, are preceded by a thorough
introduction to the preconditions and the theory of epic poetry, especially intertextual and narratological theories.
Papers on the tradition of structural elements and type scenes in medieval and neo-Latin epic complete the study.
The compendium provides scholars and students of literary studies with a comprehensive overview of type scenes
and narrative patterns for a deeper understanding of the structures of epic narratives, especially their place in the epic
tradition, their flexibility, and the development they undergo from Homer to the Modern Era.

The study is devoted to the urban development of
Mediterranean port cities. Focusing on the Eastern
Mediterranean region between the early Hellenistic
era and the late Roman Empire, it addresses how
the coastal location of cities impacted their form
and appearance. The monograph makes a substan-

urban development in coastal areas.

The modern history of Egypt and the Sudan has radically impacted Nubian populations. Recognizing the danger to the
archeological record posed by various development projects, researchers have worked extensively in recent decades to
identify, secure, and record traces of Nubian culture, thus stimulating enormous growth in all areas of Nubian cultural
history. In addition to knowledge stemming from the vast geographical area historical occupied by Nubian populations,
various important discoveries have also been made at Egyptian archaeological sites and in neighboring regions.
The forty-two articles in this handbook consider cultural developments over time as well as their geographical compo-
nents. Commencing with Stone Age discoveries, the articles trace the development of pastoral settlements and the rise
of larger cultural agglomerations in the Nile flood plain. Following an examination of Bronze Age cultures, the discus-
sion moves to the Kingdoms of Napata and Meroe, the Christian Kingdoms, and the Islamic early modern period.
This edited volume aims to apprise cultural historians of the latest research insights while shedding new light on the
dynamic history of Nubian culture, which is a crucial intermediary between the Mediterranean region and Africa.
