1. Why did you choose your proposed course and institution ?

I am applying for a master's program in Civil Engineering. This course is related to my undergraduate
education background and also has a strong correlation with my current employment. My
motivation is to deepen my understanding related to the issues in order to resolve problems of
developing infrastructure in North Kalimantan province initially in border districts. The challenges
that we faced in the field of work are to build effective infrastructures that comprise the public
building, residential road, sanitation, and water resource management. As the youngest province in
Indonesia, North Kalimantan has to develop itself through many aspects specifically on the
infrastructure that also can support the community economic activities in order to encourage
regional economic growth.

Why I choose the University of South Australia is because of the high reputation and world rank that
they have (ranked 376th in the world and ranked 18th in Australia). This University has an award-
winning and quality teachers, and they provide state-of-the-art learning facilities. Also, the learning
is experienced-based with a practical focus, so it will be a good chance for me to improve my
knowledge and skill in the civil engineering field. As the second choice, I decided La Trobe University
because this University is in the top 1.2% of universities worldwide and also part of the Innovative
Research Universities group. With the world rank 403 and ranked 20th from universities in Australia,
La Trobe's Master of Engineering (Civil) will help me become a civil engineer who is adaptable,
innovative and prepared for the design, engineering and construction challenges of the 21st century.

2. How will your proposed study contribute your career ?

If I will be able to continue my study on a master’s program in civil engineering, this education will
assist me to improve my skill and understanding in the field of my work. I desire to be a professional
civil engineer that expert on the infrastructure planning to help Indonesia government managing the
sustainable infrastructure development program especially in North Kalimantan province.

In the future of, I also have a willing to be a lecturer in the University of North Kalimantan. Basicly, I
love learning and teaching, that is why I want to educate our young generation in Civil Engineering
course. Because for me education is also the best powerful influence that can affect the
improvement of community in a region.
3. How have you contributed to solving a challenge and to implementing change or reform ? (Be
specific and include : what aspect/s of your leadership knowledge , skills, and practice you
consider to be well established and effective; which people or organisations you worked with to
solve the problem; and what creative methods were used)

In 2018, I was involved in the planning and control team of settlement infrastructure programs
in the planning of the integrated infrastructure development in North Kalimantan. This team
was established in order to achieve the National Target of 100% clean water distribution, 0%
slum area, and 100% sanitation for the resident. One of the big projects that have been done
was turning the Selumit Pantai slum area of Tarakan city become a tourist village of fishermen.
This area is located on the seashore and has long been a slum area with a pile of garbage that
has been buried for years due to the habit of people throwing garbage into the sea. The waste
reduction project in this place will continue and the project also improves settlement roads, and
carry out painting and facade projects of people's homes so that it becomes an attractive place
to become a tourist village. It not only reduces the percentage of slum areas but also can
contribute to aspects of the economy and tourism where this place is expected to become an
interesting destination for tourists. This is certainly not easy, we must continue to socialize to
the community, especially regarding the maintenance of clean, orderly and garbage-free
environments. Initially, the people were less familiar with the habit changes in the
neighborhood, but now, this can be done slowly by local residents and the changes begin to be
real. Regarding waste reduction, we also made efforts by installing garbage nets. This is to
prevent trash in the sea from being carried away by the waves and into the area where
residents live and resulting in continuous accumulation of garbage.

4. Please : a) Give up to three practical examples of how you intend to use the knowledge, skills,
and connections you will gain from your scholarship. Possible tasks can be personal and/or
professional; and b) List any possible constrains you think may prevent you from achieving these
task.

After completing my study, firstly I will come back to my hometown and back to the government
agency where I have been worked and give a contribution to the infrastructure development
planning in my province. Secondly, I will concern the effective and green infrastructure
development planning in my province. I will develop the planning that refers to the condition of
community social and culture, considering the tourism potential of the district so that the
infrastructure built later will not only have an impact on fulfilling the needs of the community
but also on the economic growth of the community. Thirdly, years later I desire to involved in
university education in North Kalimantan. Using the knowledge and experience I have, I want to
contribute to the education field of my hometown.
All of the development planning will not work without the support of the local government and
community. The difficulty of the local community in land freeing is the case that most often
happened when the development projects are to be carried out. So it is not uncommon for
projects to be stopped. In the last, the development projects in an area obviously need enough
funding that supports the works. The restricted fund from government will inhibit the
development goal to be achieved.
