Choose The Correct Sentence
Bank Clerk exams are really tough and to win one should be prepared to answer all kinds of questions.
Sometimes new types of questions will be asked. Don't lose your presence of mind. Without panicking go
through the questions understand them well and try to answer them. In choosing the correct sentence five
sentences will be given with same theme. You are required to find the correct sentence. The error may be of
grammar or sentence order or structure of a sentence.
Solved Examples
Directions : Some sentences are given which are of the same theme. Choose the sentence which is correct
grammatically.
1.(1)If he came, I will pay him
(2) If he comes, I would pay him
(3) If he came, I would pay him
(4) If he has came, I would pay him
(5) If he came, I would have paid him
 In the second sentence present tense is given in conditional clause, then will/ shall + verb should be used
in the main clause. It is wrong. In the fifth one to correct the sentence in the conditional clause past perfect
tense should be used.
 When past tense is used in the conditional clause, 'should/would + verb' should be used in the main
clause. So, (3) is the answer.
2.(1)He is too young to climb the hill
(2) He is too young he cannot climb the hill
(3) He is so young to climb the hill
(4) He is so young that to climb the hill
(5) He is very young to climb the hill
 With 'too' negative is not used. So choice (2) is wrong. With 'so that' ---- 'not' should be used so (3) and
(4) are wrong. 'too --- to' is the correct usage. (1) is the answer.
3.(1)Since the dividend being declared than the notices were prepared for mailing
(2) Scarcely had the dividend been declared than the notices were sent out
(3) They had no sooner declared the dividend when they send the notices to the stockholders.
(4) No sooner had the dividend been declared than the notices were prepared for mailing.
(5) The company had hardly declared the dividend till the notices were prepared for mailing
 With 'No sooner' ........ the conjunction used is 'than'. With 'Scarcely', 'Hardly' – 'when' is used. So clearly
the correct sentence is (4)
4.(1)In thirty seven bomb-blasts, fortunately only five lives were lost
(2) In thirty seven bomb - blasts, only five lives were fortunately lost
(3) In fortunately thirty seven bomb- blasts only five lives were lost
(4) Fortunately, in thirty seven bomb- blasts, only five lives were lost.
(5) None of these
 Only sentence (4) has the correct order. So (4) is the answer.
5.(1)I was rather impressed by the manner of the speaker than by his matter
(2) I was impressed by the manner of the speaker rather than by his matter
(3) Rather was I impressed by the manner of the speaker than by his matter.
(4) I was impressed rather by the manner of the speaker than by his matter.
(5) None of these
 (2) is the answer.
