ENGS 24 – MECHANICS OF DEFORMABLE BODIES

First Semester A.Y. 2019-2020

Problem Set no. 1

(Simple Stress)

Instruction: Copy and answer the following problems below in CE Paper. Add the summation of the last two digits of
your student numbers to the given forces or allowable stresses and use as the given values to your solution.
Box your final answer. Use black ink for your solution and pencil/ black ink to any diagram. It will be
submitted on or before February 27, 2020 .

1. The specimen failed in a tension test at an angle of 52° when the axial load was 100 kN. If the
diameter of the specimen is 12mm, determine the average normal and average shear stress acting
on the area of the inclined failure plane. Also, what is the
average normal stress acting on the cross-section when failure
occurs.

2. If P = 20kN, determine the average shear stress developed in the pins at A and C. The pins are
subjected to double shear as shown, and each has a
diameter of 18mm.

3. The triangular blocks are glued along each side of the joint. A C-clamp placed between two of the
blocks is used to draw the joint tight. If the clamping force is F = 900 N, determine the average shear
stress developed in the glued shear plane.

4. Figure shows two views of the upper end of a bar B which is fastened to a fitting A by means of a pin of 5 cm
diameter. The force P = 32 kN. Determine:
a. the shearing stress induced in the pin, Ans._____________
b. the bearing stresses in A and B,Ans.____________
c. the maximum tensile stresses in A and B.* note that the reaction at fittings A is equal and opposite to the
applied force at bar B. Ans.____________

5. If the allowable bearing stress for the material under the supports at A and B ( σ b allow = 1.5 MPa,
determine the size of square bearing plates A’ and B’ required to support the load. Dimension the
plates to the nearest mm. The reaction at the supports are vertical. Take P = 100 kN.

6. The aluminum bracket A is used to support the centrally applied load of 40 kN. If it has constant
thickness of 12 mm, determine the smallest height h in order to prevent a shear failure. The failure
shear stress is τ f ail = 160 M P a. Use factor of safety for shear of F.S. = 2.5
τ ail
*Note τ allow = F f.S.

(stress-Strain Diagram)

1. The material for the 50-mm-long specimen has the stress-strain diagram shown. If P = 100 kN,
determine the elongation of the specimen. *Note if the stress is within the stress of proportional
limit then hooke’s law is applicable σ = E ε

2. The material for the 50-mm-long specimen has the stress-strain diagram shown. If P = 150 kN is
applied and released, determine the permanent elongation of the specimen.
