CHAPTER III

A. NARRATIVE REPORT ON DAILY ACTIVITIES

February 19, 2019

Today we officially started our OJT. First, we been oriented about the company

rules like respecting the staff’s, which I believe should always be observed by us, and

specially our attitudes towards other people in the workplace. We were also told to wear

our departmental or OJT uniforms and ID’s as much as possible for them to easily

identify us. After the orientation, the engineers were introduced to us namely, Engr.

Rolex Pimentel and Engr. Neil Anthony Sevilleja. Also, they have introduced Sir James,

he is the Mechanical Support. The first tasked they gave to us is to read the blueprint of

Electro Mechanic Chart, the Schematic Diagram of all the Machineries in Baligatan

Hydroelectric Power and the papers of Oil Pressure Equipment and Fire Protection

System which I enjoyed reading. After that at around 3PM they also toured us in

Baligatan Hydroelectric Power Plant and they taught us the uses and functions of the

tools and machineries that are present in there. I believed that it is very important for us

to be attentive with knowledge shared to us for this will help and contribute in widening

our knowledge.

February 20, 2019

This is our second day of training, which we started at early morning around

7:45AM because we had a meeting headed by Engr. Neil in the conference room with

all the staffs of EMS Group and after a while, we introduced our self to all the staff’s.

After the meeting, Engr. Rolex gave again the Power Plant Manual’s and I read the

Governor and Unit Automation, at first I was intimidated with the pictures because I am

not an Electronics Engineer yet so I was clueless about it, however thanks to Engr.

Rolex who showed us the upgraded equipment’s namely the new Governor Machines,

they showed us too the old Governor Machines and the Guard Gate 1 and Guard Gate

2. There are many significant differences between the two Governors machines like the

size and how it is operated, needless to say I believe that I prefer the new one since it is

much easier and efficient to use though of course they have the same use and function.

I believe again this will help and contribute in widening our knowledge.

We had our meeting again at 7:45AM headed by Engr. Rolex, we were reminded

that they always conduct a meeting every morning for the discussion and distribution of

the tasks today. After the meeting again, Engr. Rolex gave again the Power Plant

Manual’s and I read the Turbine Specifications and Turbine Installations, I watched

some videos to make me easily understand how it works in a dam and the turbine.

Suddenly, in the afternoon I was shocked and a little bit nervous because Engr. Francis

Francisco entered the room and greeted us, he told his story in life on why he became a

successful Professional Engineer and after that we introduced our self to him with our

name, age, address, and why I choose BSECE and my expectation’s as trainee in NIA.

After a while, he taught us how to understand and read the schematic diagram, sad to

say that I was not able to understand what he explained, but hoping to understand it

later on and I believed again this will help and contribute to widening our knowledge.

Today, Engr. Francis Francisco conducted a meeting to all his staff and asked for

an update of their projects, After the meeting, Engr. Francis told us that Engr. Rolex will

be handling us because they have an appointment together with Engr. Neil, that’s why

we read their manuals again. Around 10AM, Engr. Rolex said we were going to

Baligatan Hydroelectric Power Plant ordered by Engr. Francis to asked their operators,

we asked first the Electrical Operator Marlon Mangahas to help us in the schematic

diagram or a blueprint of unit automation but sad to say that it’s a bit messy to

understand. At around 3PM Sir Jatur Bacani a Plant Electrician and Sir Ellioterio Dela

Cruz a Registered Master Electrician came at the control room and thanks to Sir Zatur

because he helps us to understand the blueprint of automation, and Sir Ellioterio told us

how the generatos works on the Baligantan Dam. Thanks to the three Operators there

because I gained a little bit of knowledge in Hydroelectric Power Plant. I believe this will

help and contribute to widening our knowledge.

meeting Engr. Francis talked again about our reading of the blueprint and asked if we

can analyze that, we said, “not yet” because it’s so confusing, then he reminded us that

our presentation will be on march 15, 2019. Then after that, around 9AM Engr. Rolex

entered the room and talked about the history of the switchyard then he presented a

chart of the switchyard and we came to understand a little bit. In the afternoon, after

lunch break around 1PM we read again all the blueprint, operation and maintenance of

the system, the chart of all the machineries until five o’clock, and I believe again this will

help and contribute to widening our knowledge.

on their projects in the MARIIS dam, while the other is in Baligatan Hydroelectric Power

Plant because Engr. Erwin said they have a visitor from SN Aboitiz that will visit the

Baligatan Dam. After the meeting, Engr. Francis talked again about our presentation.

He said that we can go in the Baligatan Hydroelectric Power Plant tomorrow to asked

again their operators since we can’t go today because they have visitors there in the

Baligatan, he taught us how to understand again the blueprint, the chart, the automation

of generators on how can we shut down and turn on, and how to control the

hydroelectric power plant safely. After he taught us about that, he left us again in the

conference room and we read again the chart, we studied the block diagram of the

automation on how to close and how to open, we search in the internet, I watched a

video about how dam works so that i can understand a little bit. We studied until at five

o’clock in the afternoon. I believe this will help and contribute to widening our

knowledge.

routine to make an attendance and a group photo every day. After the meeting, we

talked to Engr. Francis about our presentation. Then we went to Baligatan Hydroelectric

Power Plant around 9AM. We rode on a huge vehicle, then we stop for a while at the

market to buy a food for our lunch and then we proceeded immediately to Baligatan

Hydroelectric Power Plant. When we arrived, we interviewed some of the operators

there and they gave us ideas on what to do. Thereafter, we studied what we need to do

on our presentation and we did our best. We went to the location of machineries from

elevation 158 to elevation 150. We took pictures each one of them and put its

corresponding explanations. I believe this will help and contribute to widening our

Plant to check with their Operating Maintenance which is in charge in the dam. After we

entered in the operating room, we met Sir Elliot Dela Cruz, RME and we asked him

about the sequences of automations, the schematic diagram, and the block diagram of

how the automation works. He taught us all about the automations, he oriented us and

we went to elevation 154 and 150. He discussed the butterfly valve on how it works, the

cooling water system, the generator and the shaft, all the electrical, mechanical and

electronics machineries there and many more, He teaches us until 3PM. After that,

there were two operators who shared their knowledge about mechanical and electrical

operations. I believe this will help and contribute to widening our knowledge.

other classmates who finished their OJT’s arrived in EMS office to pass our evaluation

B. CHALLENGES/DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED

The challenges/difficulties we encountered during our training were some of the

lessons we had were hard to understand for we have a little knowledge of it. Sometimes

when they were discussing the things and equipment’s/machines that we first met in our

life, it is very hard to understand what their work is in the power plant. Next, we lend to

be sleepy during the discussions and when studying the Manuals of all the

equipment/machines in the Powerplant because it is difficult to understand and apply in

our mind. Third, we need to behave at all times when going at Hydro Electric Power

Plant per elevations (158, 154 and 150) because all the controls, machines and wirings

there is too sensitive and it can cause trouble in any human. Fourth, we need to get up

very early in the morning so that the LTO can’t catch us and at the same time, we will

not be late in the Office.

C. PROBLEMS MET AND SOLUTION OFFERED.

The problems we encountered is to arrive at the office in the morning because it is

far and too deep from our place/home, and the solution they offered is having private

vehicle and motorcycle. The other problems we met again if we have a private vehicle

or motorcycle is, we have no drivers license and having a doubt at Land Transportation

offered is to drive safely going in the office and be careful on the road.
