1. Effective material storage and handling may help improve work flow and productivity in

a shipyard. As a shipyard manager you need to store a lot of raw materials such as ferrous and

non-ferrous platings, bars and rods, toxic chemicals such as acids, resins and catalyst, timber and

fiber glass materials in the stockyard of your shipyard. Develop safe methods and procedures for

storage and handling of these materials and discuss the reasons why you choose those methods in

a short report.

2. Your short report should be at least 5 pages, Font 12, Times New Roman, 1.5 spacing, in

English. Submit your report by next week’s lecture period.

INTRODUCTION

Handling and storing materials is conduct in every department, warehouse, or facility. The

efficient handling and storing of materials are important to our industry nowadays. In addition to

raw materials, these operations provide a continuous flow of parts and assemblies through the

workplace and ensure that materials are available when needed. Unfortunately, the improper

handling and storing of materials often result in costly injuries because injuries can occur in any

part of the operation, not limited to stockroom or warehouse. Handling of material accounts for

20% to 45% of all occupational injuries.

DEVELOP SAFE METHOD AND PROCEDURES FOR STORAGE

Storage of materials should be secure, neat, and orderly to eliminate hazards and conserve

space. Planning materials storage is important to make sure materials safe and in good condition.

A good plan for storing materials reduces the amount of handling needed both to bring materials

into production. It shall be necessary for to select the most optimum method taking into account

the nature, size and weight of materials and capacity of warehouse and open storage area.

 Storage method for metals

Metals may be classified as ferrous or non-ferrous metal. Main element of ferrous metal

is iron (cast iron, plain carbon steels and alloy steels). A non-ferrous metal contains no

iron or less iron (aluminium, copper, brass and bronze). Metals commonly used in

shipbuilding industry. All the metals need to store at specific storage to avoid corrosion.

Corrosion is big problem because it can cause metals gets thinner, and wastage of metals

because it useless. So in order to make sure metals in good condition, basic method of

storing are shown below:

Plate stacking

 This method commonly used in ship industry and

suitable for plates

Vertical plate storage

 The plates compactly in the racks

 Access to the plates is quick and easy (saving

time)

 Storage method for timber

Timber is commonly used in boat construction or building components in a steel ship.

Apart from its versatility and ease of use, it provides an attractive finish. There are 3

types of timber that used in boat buildings.

a. Hardwoods : its mainly in structural area of boat and difficult to work with

b. Softwoods : easy to work with and more lighter compare to hardwoods

c. Plywood : the bonding of thin layers of wood and provides good strength

So in order to make sure timber in good condition, basic methods of storing are shown

below:

Cross-wise stacking

 This method is suitable for square timbers or the like

to keep them stable and dry

 Allow airing of timber

 Limit chances of timber getting damaged

 Enable stock rotation

 Storage method for fibers

In marine terms, fibres basically known as GRP (glass reinforces plastics) and FRP (fibre

reinforced plastic) is widely used in boat construction as well as fittings. GRP and FRP is

replacing timber in ship construction because less production of timber nowadays. The main

features of GRP and FRP are versatility, strength, light weight and low maintenance compare

to metals and timber. So in order to make sure timber in good condition and in safe place,

basic methods of storing are shown below:

Rolled shape

 Easy to access and arrange

 Protect from highly reactive chemical

Material handling equipment is mechanical equipment used for the movement, storage,

control and protection of materials, goods and products throughout the process of manufacturing,

distribution, consumption and disposal. The different types of material handling equipment can

be classified into four major categories which are;

I. Transport equipment

II. Positioning equipment

III. Unit load formation equipment

IV. Storage equipment

DISCUSSION

As project manager, I should take care about safety and health in workplace. Improper

storage and handling will make harms to workers or it might be death. Safe storage and handling

materials will make work be more efficient because usually the work done properly without

exposed any hazard that will make accident. Next, project manager must exercise material

management in workplace because it important element in project planning and control. Poor

material management can lead to improper work and may cause business worse.

Lastly, all items must store at their specific place and arranged well. It because can saving

time and easy to access. For example, metals store in covered place with specific arrangement

that shelter from water and air to avoid rust or corrosion. That’s why I choose those storage

methods to avoid waste, injury and increase profit.
