15ARC 9.1 PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
The objective of this course is to offer students an opportunity to work in an
architect’s office and get acquainted with the demands of the profession,
including carrying out independent critical study of a building of architectural
importance, study of an innovative building material and study of observed and
drafted details.
Course contents:
The professional training shall be for duration of one year split in two semesters (as
mentioned above) in various aspects of architectural practice. During every
semester, the candidate shall produce four reports viz., Training Report, Building
Study Report, and Building Material Study & Building Details Report.
The Training Report shall consist of various drawings, observations, technical
graphic data, etc. worked on, during the process of training both at office and
sites.
The Building Study Report shall be a critical appraisal of one of the noted buildings
designed and supervised by the firm in which the candidate is undergoing his/her
training.
The Building Material Study Report shall include pertinent data, characteristics,
applications and constructional details of a contemporary building material based
on a thorough research.
The Building Details report shall consist of a wide range of innovative and unique
details with respect to construction, materials/finishes and aesthetics. The details
should cover aspects of interior design, construction detail, technical design,
product design, façade design etc.
A minimum of 8 details shall be done under each of the above aspects.
Professional training shall be carried out as per the prescribed professional training rules.
Students are required to go through the manual before commencement of
professional training.
1.0 PRELUDE

a) The training shall be under an Architect registered with Council of Architecture in
India or Equivalent Authority when working Abroad.
b) The candidate has to work for a minimum of 16 weeks as per the firm’s timings,
rules & procedures. These 16 weeks do not include any public holidays or leaves
taken by the student.
c) In case a student wants to change the office for any genuine reason, he/she
should follow the rules and regulations for changing office as per the training
manual.
d) If a student puts in extra time & work, it may be endorsed by the principal architect
and sent to the institution. The student will be benefitted in terms of knowledge,
exposure and experience.
2.0 FORMALITIES DURING TRAINING
a) A joining report through the Head of the Organization should reach the Training
Coordinator within one week of joining (Format 1)*
b) Students are expected to maintain a work diary and record day to day
activities during the training in the prescribed format 2*.This is very important for
constant monitoring of the work done.
c) Based on their work diary, students have to prepare monthly log sheets (duly
signed by the Principal Architect or authorized officer supervising the work with
official seal) and email the scanned copy of the same to the Training
coordinator within the first week of every calendar month, to

The log sheet should be in the prescribed format 3*only. Original monthly log sheets shall
be submitted at the end of the training period as a part of the Training Report.

d) On completion of training the student must obtain the Training
Completion Certificate, from the Principal Architect of the Office and
submit to school of Architecture, in original as prescribed in Format 4*
2.1 Regulations for change of office:

A student has to complete 16 weeks of training in one firm only.
In case of a genuine reason if the student has to change the firm in between the term,
he/she has to follow certain procedures as stated below
i) He/she has to inform the office and the training coordinators at least two
weeks in advance before changing a firm.
ii) He /she is required to submit the following documents to the training coordinator
● Copy of the mail sent to the office informing them of the change of firm with
genuine reason.
● Copy of the reply received by the student from their office stating that they
have no objections to the student leaving the firm in between the term.
iii) He/She is required to complete fresh 16 weeks of training in new firm. The old
firm in which the student has done part internship will not be considered.

4.0: COMPILATION OF REPORTS
4.1 Training Report
The training report will consist of:
● Copies of the drawings done by the student in the office duly signed by the
supervisor. Only those drawings worked on by the student should be
included in the report. It may also contain details of site visits, Photographs,
sketches and minutes of meetings prepared by the student.
● A minimum 2-page write-up about the experiences of the professional
training. The write up can have anecdotes and visuals of the firm and the
work environment.
● The report should be in minimum A3 format
● All sketches should be hand-drawn
● all the drawings of the training report must be signed by the Principal
Architect along with the seal and COA registration number.
4.2 Building Study Report
The building study report shall consist of:
● A complete study and appraisal of the building giving due considerations
to concept, function, form, construction technology, planning, structural
systems, services, materials, costing and project management. It should
include appropriate and adequate illustrations.
● The study should include wide range of construction and architectural
details. All details to be sketched. Minimum of 5 details to be provided.
Photographs, if used, should only be to reinforce sketches.
● The study should include the factors which influenced the design based on
the discussions with the architect who designed the building.
● The report should include a POST OCCUPANCY EVALUATION after speaking
to the users of the finished building.

● The report should be in A3 landscape format. The written matter should be
relevant with graphics and in Arial 12 font with 1.5 line spacing and 25 mm
margin all around.
4.3 Building Material Study
● A well-researched and exhaustive study of any interesting building material
used locally in the town/city where the student works.
● This must include physical characteristics, behavioral properties,
applications, scope and limitation of the use, and cost factors.
● The report should include samples of the material.
● The report should be in A3 landscape format. The written matter should be
done in Arial 12 font with 1.5 line spacing and 25mm margin all around.
● The report can have a summarized content from brochures and not the
brochures directly.
4.4 Building Details Report
The building Details report shall consist of a wide range of innovative and unique details
with respect to construction, materials/finishes and aesthetics. The details should
cover aspects of
● interior design
● construction detail
● technical design
● structural detail
● product design
● Façade design etc.
A minimum of 5 details shall be done under each of the above aspects. Each detail
should have a context with minimum, appropriate text and neat sketches. The
report should be in A3 landscape format. The details shall be in the form of 2d
and 3d proportionate sketches and neatly drafted to appropriate scale. No
colors should be used in the details.
4.5 Office Documents
● Original Joining Report on Letterhead of the Organization duly signed by
the Principal Architect along with the seal and COA registration number.

● Original Completion Certificate on letterhead of the organization duly
signed by the Principal Architect along with the seal and COA registration
number.
● The Work Dairy of the training period showing the works done on every
working day.
● Original Monthly Log sheets.

6.0 IMPORTANT REMINDERS
1. Joining report within a week of joining the office
a. Joining report shall be as per enclosed FORMAT

c. Original joining report to be submitted at the time of reporting back to the
institute.

Note:
1. If the Student fail to send the monthly log sheets within the first week of the
following month then they will be marked out of 50% for that particular log sheet
under procedural criteria.
2. Any document or drawing without signature of the principal architect and seal
will not be accepted.
