SPECIFICATION – STANDPIPE AND HOSE SYSTEMS

1.0 GENERAL

This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for a Standpipe and Hose System. The Standpipe and Hose System is to
assure the safety of the occupants in the building during a fire. The design of the Standpipe
and Hose System shall conform to this specification and the complete Standpipe and Hose
System shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.

This specification shall describe the requirements for a Class I, II, and III Fire Hose
Standpipe.

1.1 References
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the more stringent shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a
minimum guide. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment,
materials and processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

2.0 DEFINITIONS

3.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance
with the respective health and safety requirements established by the following:
 MARAFIQ Standards
 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.
In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.

Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.

4.0 SUBMITTALS

The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:

 Compliance Statement
Submit certificates from the manufacturer as evidence that the products meet these
Specifications and the referenced standards and codes.
 Statements of NFPA compliance and UL listing, as applicable.
 Contractor's Material and Test Certificate as described in NFPA 14.

 Hydraulic calculations
Hydraulic calculations shall be prepared on forms that include a summary sheet, detailed
worksheet and a graph sheet or by using computer program accepted by MARAFIQ.
 Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data for all hose valves, hoses, hose cabinets, isolation valves,
check valves, alarm valves and all other accessories and system components, including
but not limited to:
 Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
 Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 14.
Complete field detail, shop fabrication and installation drawings of supply piping, including
locations of hose valves, isolation valves, standpipe, showing routing of all piping,
location of hangers, supports, pipe restraints, inserts, sleeves, escutcheon plates,
inspector test valve, and other accessories.
Such plans shall be clear, legible and drawn to scale.
The plans shall also describe all system components.
The plans shall include an elevation diagram.
Define water service and connection with main supply.
Show drain locations on drawings.
 Submit Coordination Drawings
Coordinate the location, signage, keying and access of isolation valves, hose valves and
zone valves as required by Project Specifications.
Coordinate location of drains shown on plumbing drawings with requirements of fire hose
standpipe system.
 Hydraulic Calculations
The hydraulic calculations for the fire hose standpipe system shall be a computer
generated hydraulic calculation program, such as HASS, Elite, or Pipenet. The
calculations shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14 and shall be printed in a standard
NFPA format.
 As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate fire hose standpipe systems, locations and symbols on the Shop
Drawings and As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
 Maintenance and Operating Instructions

Submit data conforming to NFPA 14 for maintenance of a fire hose standpipe system.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
 Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
 Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
14.
Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and underground
piping.

5.0 QUALITY CONTROL

The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality to the
approval of MARAFIQ.

5.1 Regulatory Requirements


Comply with MARAFIQ Design Criteria.
Comply with the Saudi Arabian Standards, where applicable and where updated data
are available.
The system shall meet, at a minimum, the technical requirements of the local country
governing codes and recommended practices.
5.2 Products Quality
Products shall be free of defects in materials, fabrication, finish and installation.
Any fire equipment that incurs damage, is painted, or is sprayed with any obstructive
material shall not be accepted.
Each item of equipment shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and/or
approved by Factory Mutual (FM).
All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in
accordance with the best practices of the industry.
5.3 Electrical
All electrical work associated with the fire hose standpipe system shall be in
accordance with NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.

6.0 DESCRIPTION OF STANDPIPE AND HOSE SYSTEMS

6.1 General
A Standpipe and Hose System shall be provided as required by Project
Specifications. The Class type of Standpipe and Hose Systems to be provided shall
follow the requirements of the Project Specifications.

6.2 Class I Standpipe System


System that provides 65 mm (2 ½ in.) hose connections to supply water for use by
fire departments.
6.3 Class II Standpipe System
System that provides 40 mm (1 ½ in.) hose stations (cabinets) to supply water for use
primarily by trained personnel or by the fire department during initial response.
6.4 Class III Standpipe System
System that provides 40 mm (1 ½ in.) hose stations (cabinets) to supply water for use
by trained personnel and 65 mm (2 ½ in.) hose connections to supply a larger volume
of water for use by fire departments.

7.0 DESIGN CRITERIA

Design of the fire hose standpipe system shall be in accordance with NFPA 14, this
specification and Project Specification.

The design of the system shall be complete with all necessary accessories for proper
operation.

System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.

Components within the protected spaces shall be designed to withstand the elevated
temperatures which could occur during a fire.

The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.

This specification includes piping, fire hose cabinets (and related equipment), fire department
connections, and all other related appurtenances for a fire hose standpipe systems.

The fire hose standpipe system shall not prevent access to equipment for routine
maintenance.

Isolation valves shall be readily accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.

Provisions should be made in the design of the system to perform testing and maintenance.

In all cases, a detailed layout shall be made of the fire hose standpipe system and equipment.

Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA and Project
Specification.

7.1 Backflow Preventer


If the fire hose standpipe system is connected to the public water supply, a backflow
preventer shall be provided to prevent contamination of the public water supply.

All backflow preventers shall be UL listed and / or FM approved, and listed for use in
fire protection service.

8.0 PRODUCTS

All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 14 and Project Specifications. Only listed materials and
devices shall be used in the installation of the fire hose standpipe system. Components that
do not affect system operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be
listed.

System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which they are
exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.

The equipment, materials, valves and other devices installed shall be UL listed and/or FM
approved.

All fire department connections and fire hose valves shall be fully coordinated and matched
with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or coupling shall be
purchased before confirming and fulfilling Local Fire Department conditions.

8.1 Fire Hose Cabinet


All fire hose cabinets shall be UL and/or FM approved. Construction shall be of one-
piece heavy gauge cold-rolled steel construction or equivalent treatment with rolled
edges construction (no sharp edges or burns). Mounting holes for surface mounting
cabinets shall be pre-drilled at the factory.
8.2 Hose Cabinet Design
Cabinet shall be of sufficient size to accommodate the fire hose along with all
specified accessories. The hose valve shall be located such that there is at least 25
mm (1 in.) between any part of the cabinet and the handle of the valve when the
valve is in any position from fully opened to fully close.
Door shall swing open 180°.
Finish shall be electrostatic powder paint, oven baked finish. Color shall be red.
Glass shall be clear, wired glass panel.
Operating instructions shall be printed in English and shall be located inside the
cabinet doors.
8.3 Hose Rack\Hose Reel Assembly
Hose rack assembly shall be of one piece construction, swivel type and shall be of a
type that is easy to assemble and disassemble. Hose rack shall be UL and/or FM
approved.

8.4 Nozzles - 40 mm (1½ in.)


Nozzles shall be 40 mm (1½ in.), brass, combination fog-straight stream and
adjustable shut-off nozzle.
8.5 Fire Hose Angle Valve
Fire hose angle valve shall be UL Listed and/or FM approved. The fire hose angle
valve shall be sized for the Class of Standpipe it is to be used for, either 40 mm (1 ½
in.) or 65 mm (2 ½ in.)
8.6 Backflow Preventer
Backflow preventers shall be UL listed and / or FM approved, and listed for use in fire
protection service.
8.7 Check Valves
Check valve shall be manufactured with supply side and system side gauge
connections and a main drain outlet in conformance with NFPA 14.
Spring loaded type check valve, when selected shall have stainless-steel spring and
hinge pin; for vertical/horizontal mounting.
Swing type check valve, when selected shall have rubber coated clapper assembly
hinged to a removable access cover for periodic inspection as required in NFPA 25.
All check valves must have non-slamming characteristics.
Check valves shall be UL Listed and/or FM approved for fire protection service.
8.8 System or Main Drain
Drain connections shall be located and sized in accordance to NFPA 14.
8.9 Isolation Valves
All isolation valves shall be specifically designed for fire protection service. All valves
shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14 and Project Specifications. All fire-protection
service valves shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
8.10 Water Flow Alarms
Waterflow alarm apparatus shall be UL listed for the service and shall be interlocked
with fire alarm system. An alarm unit shall include a listed mechanical alarm or horn
or a listed electric device, bell, speaker, horn, or siren. Piping to the water-motor-
operated devices shall have corrosion resistance equal to or better than galvanized
ferrous pipe and fittings and shall be of a size not less than 20 mm (¾ in.).
Electrical alarm devices used outdoors shall be listed for this purpose. Electrical
fittings and devices listed for use in hazardous locations shall be used where required
by NFPA 70. Outdoor water-motor-operated or electrically operated bells shall be
protected from the weather and shall be provided with guards.
8.11 Pressure Switches
Pressure switches shall be electrical-supervision-type, water-flow switch with
adjustable retarding feature. They shall include SPDT, normally closed contacts and
design that operate on rising pressure and signals water flow. The alarm pressure
switch shall be compatible with system devices.

8.12 Valve Supervisory Switches


Valve supervisory switches shall be electrical; SPDT; with normally closed contacts.
They shall include design that signals controlled valve is in other than fully open
position. OS&Y switches shall monitor stem movement and shall be complete with
mounting J-bolts. Switch housing shall be finished in red baked enamel. Switches
shall be UL 753 and/or FM approved for the application in which they are used.
8.13 Alarms Attachments
Alarms attachments shall be as per NFPA 14. An alarm unit shall include a listed
mechanical alarm, horn, or siren or a listed electric gong, bell, speaker, horn, or siren.
Outdoor water motor-operated or electrically operated bells shall be weatherproofed
and guarded.
8.14 Water Motor Alarm
Water motor alarm shall be a rugged, hydraulically operated outdoor alarm designed
for use with fire protection system waterflow detection valves. It shall be lightweight
impeller type alarm gong, capable of producing very high sound pressure level.
The gong, gong mount, and water motor housing shall be fabricated from corrosion
resistant alloys or equivalent and shall be chrome plated or red enameled gong with
non-lubrication bearings for long life.
Water motor alarm shall be furnished with approved Y-strainer. All piping to water
motor-operated devices shall be provided with galvanized or brass or other corrosion-
resistant material acceptable by NFPA 13 and of a size not less than 20 mm (¾ in).
The water motor alarm shall be UL Listed and/or FM Approved for the application in
which it is used.
8.15 Pipes, Joints and Fittings
Piping and fittings used on the wet standpipe and hose system shall meet the
requirements of NFPA 14 and the requirements of MQ-SP-P-5002 – PIPING –
MATERIAL SPECIFICATION LINE CLASS – PROCESS AND UTILITY PIPING
Copper pipe and fittings shall not be used.
8.16 Pipe Hangers and Supports
Pipe hangers and supports shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14 and MQ-SP-P-
5024 – PIPING SUPPORT ELEMENTS.
8.17 Pressure Gauges
The required pressure gauges shall have a maximum limit not less than twice the
normal system working pressure at the point where installed. Pressure gauges shall
be moisture proof and weather resistant type. They shall be UL listed and/or FM
approved for fire service.
8.18 Strainers
Strainers shall be provided for all systems where the water is likely to contain
obstructive material.
The strainer shall be located immediately upstream of any fire hose valve or fire hose
connection. The strainer shall be of a type that can be cleaned while in service and
shall be listed for fire service.

Pipeline strainers shall be specifically listed for use in firewater supply connections.
Strainers shall be capable of removing from the water all solids of sufficient size to
obstruct the fire hose spray nozzles. Strainers shall be installed so as to be
accessible for flushing or cleaning.
The filter housing shall be carbon steel; for use in salt/brackish water it shall be
internally epoxy coated. Filter element material to be stainless steel (316L).
8.19 Identification Signs
Provide identification signs for all system and water supply control valves, sectional
valves, riser control valves, drain valves, test and drain connections and alarm
devices with securely attached identification signs in accordance with NFPA 14.
Provide identification signs at each valve to indicate its function and what it controls.
Provide hydraulic design information signage as required by NFPA 14.
Identification signs shall be permanently marked weatherproof metal sign secured
with corrosion-resistant wire, chain, or other approved means.
The installation of signs required by NFPA 14 shall be verified.

9.0 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE

All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for compliance with
specifications.

All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer.

Materials shall be delivered in their original packages, containers, or bundles bearing the
brand name and the name of the material.

Pipe, fittings, valves, hoses, and fire fighting equipment shall be stored with open ends sealed
until removed for installation.

Materials shall be protected from weather, soil, and damage during delivery, storage, and
construction.

Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall
be immediately replaced.

Cabinets shall be shipped without door glass. Glass shall be shipped separately, properly
packaged to prevent breakage.

Store cabinets, glass and accessories as recommended by the manufacturer above ground
and in a dry place.

10.0 INSTALLATION

All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with this specification, Project
Specification, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and applicable codes and
standards.

Provide access doors or panels where control or drain valves are located behind plaster or
gypsum walls or ceilings.

Install the fire hose standpipe system in accordance to NFPA 14.

The fire hose standpipe system shall be installed by fully experienced and specialized parties.

Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and maintenance as


described in NFPA 25

10.1 Hose Cabinet


Hose cabinet shall be installed plumb and square to allow door to swing freely.
Locate cabinet so that open door shall not obstruct any other door opening. Glass
shall not be installed until cabinet installation is complete and system has been
tested. Each cabinet shall be conspicuously located and identified. Mounting height
shall be 1500 mm from the top of the cabinet to finished floor.
10.2 Isolation Valves
At least one listed indicating valve shall be installed at each source of water supply.
Locate valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of obstructions.
Install a valve at the base of each standpipe.
A supervisory switch shall be provided with each valve. The supervisory switch shall
be mounted so as not to interfere with normal operation of the valve.
Provide access doors or panels where control valves are located behind plaster or
gypsum walls or ceilings as necessary.
Access and signage shall be obvious.
10.3 Piping
Installed piping, valves, fittings and devices shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14,
this specification, and Project specification. All system valves shall be accessible
from grade and shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14.
10.4 Pipe Sleeves
Sleeves shall be provided where piping passes through walls, floors, roofs, beams
and partitions.
Sleeves shall be secured in proper position and location.
Sleeves shall be of sufficient length to pass through the entire thickness of the walls,
floors, roofs and partitions.
Sleeves shall be installed prior to construction of walls or pouring of concrete.
10.5 Escutcheon Plates
One piece or split hinge type metal plates shall be provided for piping passing
through floors, walls and ceilings in exposed areas.
Plates shall be securely anchored in place with setscrews or other approved positive
means.

10.6 Backflow Preventer


A backflow preventer shall be provided at the connection to the public water supply or
potable water supply. A backflow preventer is to prevent contamination of the
public/potable water supply.
10.7 Check Valves
Install a check valve where there shall be more than one source of water supply, in
each connection.
10.8 Drainage
Install all sprinkler pipe and fittings so that the system can self drain.
Main drain valves and auxiliary valves shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 14.
Locate all drain valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of
obstructions.
Provide access doors or panels where drain valves are located behind plaster or
gypsum walls or ceilings as necessary.
Access and signage shall be obvious.
10.9 Inspector Test Connection
Install test connections sized and located in accordance with NFPA 14.
10.10 Pressure Gauge
Provide a pressure gauge at each flow alarm switch location, and at location required
by NFPA 14.
10.11 Alarms
Where required a listed waterflow and/or supervisory alarms shall be provided.
Circuits for remote control devices on semi-automatic standpipe systems shall be
supervised in accordance with NFPA 72. Standpipe and hose systems waterflow
switch and/or supervisory alarm shall be interlocked with the fire alarm systems.
Mount switch so as not to interfere with normal operation of any equipment.

11.0 AFTER INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

Protect piping and equipment against damage

Protect piping as per NFPA 14. Protect all equipment and materials at all times.

Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation. Cover and protect equipment
materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.

12.0 START-UP AND INITIAL OPERATION

12.1 Pipe Cleaning and Flushing


Underground mains and lead-in connections to system risers shall be flushed
thoroughly before connection is made to system piping. The minimum flow rate shall
be at least that necessary to provide a velocity of 3 m/s (10 ft/s). Provide all

necessary connections, valves, oversized flushing connections, pumps, water,


chemicals etc. as required to properly clean and test the system.
Prior to testing entire system shall be flushed of foreign matter.
Start flushing at the highest point in the system to lowest drain point.
All portions of the system shall be back-flushed. Flushing of piping shall be as per
NFPA 14 and 24.
Clean exterior of pipe prior to painting.
12.2 Corrosive Chemicals
Additives and corrosive chemicals, sodium silicate or derivatives of sodium silicate,
brine or other corrosive chemicals shall not be used for testing systems or stopping
leaks.

13.0 TESTING

The fire hose standpipe system shall be tested in accordance with NFPA 14 and Project
Specifications.

13.1 Retest
If any or all of the system components fail, the specified tests shall be retested after
corrective measures have been taken.

14.0 CERTIFICATION

The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
