Idea of abstraction- everything can get you idea of many other things related to it.

Duchamp said that words are colors that aren’t in the rainbow.

Duchamp is an art movement himself

--
--He meant that his work should be seen as a howl.
“I am not a role model” - He never wanted to create schools or movements.
-We can see him as an example of artist.
-His meaning is not to follow him but to understand what is behind, to understand what we
want to do, feel free to think.
- In Marcel Duchamp we see a manifestation of art related to realty , the world and the
objects around us..

He usually says in his interviews simple things apparently, but there is a great meaning
behind them.

“I exercised the possibility of being an artist” what you do as an artist makes you understand
what are you as an individual.

Boîte-en-valise (or of Marcel Duchamp or Rrose Selavy)

A friend helped to built the valise, after this he put there

pictures and objects. Some of objects were put in certain
way, related between them.
He tried to put all together in the same place.
He made 69 copies of this suitcase.
“June hommen et june femm em printemp”
He wanted his works to be seen as a whole- and the
relation between them.
They are reproductions but they are also originals because
they are his work, as well.
At once a work in and of itself, and a reproduction in the Duchampian spirit, this miniature
museum contains 69 reproductions of Duchamp's most celebrated creations, including the
famous "Fountain," "Nude Descending a Staircase" and the "Large Glass." Mercier has
reproduced the bulk of the contents of Duchamp's original box in paper form, designing
everything to scale. Playful and accessible, the "Boîte" reflects Duchamp's desire to display his
works outside the museum and gallery system.

Dulcinee, 1911
From don Quiqote, it is an imaginary character. It is a woman how
doesn’t exist.
It’s not a beautiful woman but on the other hand has sex
appeal- it is selated with cubism

Yvonne and Madeleine torn in tartars

because of cubists he uses to cut things in the picture- it is kind of joke .
He plays with the idea that image has a live.
Technique very similar to Cezan.

Chess players
For Duchamp, who would soon devote himself to playing chess exclusively and only
intermittently producing conceptual work involving readymades, linguistic strategies, and
mechanistic imagery, chess was the perfect art form in that it engaged one’s “gray matter” rather
than one’s retina.
-cubist painting
-cubism I used in a way like cubism is looking aa a chess.
Cubims si chess- chess is cubism!
Chesse gives you many possibility of movements as the art does.
He says “ the beauty of a chess in the possibility it has in game”.
It has to do not with what you see but in meaning of objects.
He disliked that art is about what you see, it also implicated rationalism.

Photo of Duchamp playing chess on a glass table

He doesn’t like retinal aproach to art but he makes visual arts.

Art beyond retinal.
Art is an mental thing.
An artist is not only an artist but also a viewer.
An artist is a representation of a person.
The viewer makes the work of art.

Portrait of Dr. Dumouchel, 1910

He regreted thing that was lost in modernism- they lost the narrative aspect.
He makes works of art for retinal visualization.
The modernism deals with art as a whole.

Japanese apple tree, 1911

He expreams an air draft in a room , not outside.
The figure under the tree is like a Budha, expressing the orient.
Art- an experience that goes beyond our limits.
He said “ maybe I wasn’t an artist, but of one thing I’m sure, I enjoyed to be individual”.

Coffee mill, 1911

What he paints is the idea of object not the look of it.
Gives the idea of technical drawing
It shows us what it is but not how it looks.
Chocolate grinder
The same object different perception of reality.
There is also a shadow we don’t see- some mistery presence in the image.

King and queen surrounding by swift nudes, 1912

May look like a cubism but is not, neither futurism even it has someting common with.
King and Queen like in chess game, not some particular but any king and queen.
They care symbol crown.
The nudes don’t care symbol.
The stability o king and queen.
All figures melt together.
The idea of revolution - king and queen put down by people (nudes).
Also we tend to think that is an abstract idea of chess.
It has another picture behind “Adam and Eva in paradise” which is not a coincidence. The
face of Adam is similar to another picture of Dr. M.
They share the same canvas.
What do they have in common? Adam and Eva are nudes.
Paradox to be unique and at the same time to be as everybody.
He plays with elements and then puts them together.

Duchan, His friend and shake.
He has a faked beard and hair body.
They play a role and at the same time they are themselves.

Ready mades

The fountain

Duchamp was refused in the place where nothing could be refused salon of Paris, with the
staircase and the nude. This is why Duchamp stopped making art for a long time. It really
affected him. Also this is the reason he became famous in USA and in NY.
It is an important point in his life . he was a very respectable person in art world in NY.
R. Mutt, 1917 –they refused it too.
He made it on purpose to be refused.
In this way he wanted beyond the limits of people’s expectation about the work of art.
He introduced the situation where the concept of art was challenged.
It’s about what a work of art is.
He didn’t make the object, he challenged it- a urinal turned upside down.
In this way he turns the concept upside down- urinal become fountain- urine become water-
ugly is beautyfull.
The fluid you body makes becomes the fluid you drink.
The inversion of objects goes hand in hand with the inversion of the concept

Pictural nominalism
A thing becomes that thing because you call it like this. When idea is attached to a thing you
see it changes the image of that object. Making art by adding a name to it.
Art was always a mind thing.
Art is made with ideas.

Wheel
The original was lost.
He made more changes an act of sculpture we shouldn’t ignoreu putting the wheele on a
stole.
Hi liked the moving wheel he associated it with the fire place that calms you.
There an idea of travel without going anywhere, like our thoughts.

Shavel for snow

He just wrote the title on it
“in advance of Broke arm”
A manifestation of pictural nominalism.
It is a matter of confort to find some sens.
The shavel can be an appendix of the arm. An arm become an object to use.
People are objects-they can be broken.
The reatlion ship with people are also relations between their bodies.

Mona Lisa LHOOQ

He choosed the most famous painitng
He is playing with the rumors around the painting.
He makes o porno idea of painitng.

FArmacia
How the name of the objects affects what we see. One of examples where we see how
words and concepts influence art. Duchamp ty to find some sens in some things. In process
of searching this sens we experience work of art.

Unhappy ready made

We have the right to relate a book with unhappiness. Why is the book unhappy? –because
geometry, because eof time? Because eof weather.
If people want a clear explanation they are not looking for experesening art.

A door opneed and closed at the same time

He solve the duality of the objects. He questions the state of wrong and right at the same
time.

Rose se la vie
A character he created
An expestion less rational
She enjoys the luxury of live
The bride stripped bare by her Bachelors
one of the most famous work.
An attachement to get closed to an world of ideas he couldn’t materialized
He had write a book about it.
Is a reality we take from image.
What we don’t precede it doesn’t exist.
There are 2 domains, one of the bride the top one, and other to the bachelors.
They are not connected.
The figures in the glass are the dress of bide. They can’t touc it but they desire it.
The bachelors belong to her, but can’t touch.
A methafore of two worlds that aren’t connected. We can see also the chocolate grind.

1915-1923 made many studies, decalred in 1923 officialy unfinished. After an exibiton bouth
glass were broken, he declared it complete than. Later he reassembled the glass an instaled
it in musem.
He used lead wire, lead foil and dust which he said it was collected in his apartment in NY
that he used as a pictorial material.
The trace of glass is interesting because in western painting it is an idea of painting as a
window from which we look into a world that is as real as a world we standing in.
An abstartin of ideas.
The green books is tha book that contains the notes an description of each elemnt putthis
work..but what is interesting is that the green box contains loose pieces of paper that can be
read in any order, so the meaning is always in flux. Nevertheless he does name specific
elements. We shouldant looking for specific things here, becasuse we may foaling into a
trape by trying to be definitive
