Project Name:

The Needs for Proper Waste Management in Barangay Santo Rosario

Description of the BH Service Learning Project:

This Service Learning Project will provide brief description on the various
significances of the study given the problems of Barangay Santo Rosario, regarding
Solid Waste. It aims to determine what solutions we need to accomplish in order to
solve the problems in our barangay. The objectives of this project to know the social
issues of the barangay and to know what solutions we need to accomplish, and to
develop barangay awareness campaigns on the social importance of waste
management.

Through this project, I was able to gain knowledge about the happenings and
issues in our barangay. In that way, I became aware about the problems in barangay
Santo Rosario especially in terms of solid waste management. The service learning
project serves the barangay officials and personnels as their reference or guide in
creating their program concerned with Solid Waste Management. This will help the
constituents of the barangay to have a deeper understanding to the programs that
their barangay officials are making. By this study they will come up with easier and
powerful programs that could enhance the programs that the local barangay would
conduct.

Objectives of the BH Service Learning Project

1. To know the social issues of the barangay and to know what solutions we need to
accomplish
2. To learn their future ordinance and programs to solve the various issues and
problems of the community
3. To develop barangay awareness campaigns on the social importance of waste
management

B. Presentation and Discussion

I. History

It was early year of 1960 under the administration of President Diosdado

Macapagal. During that time there was a program of the government regarding
certain requirement to a place to be considered as a community. One factor that has
to be considered were the population of the said place, the majority of the
inhabitants to become independent and the capability of a certain group of people to
be able to extend responsible governance on the establishment of a community. All
obligation on the organization of a Barangay were convene, that started the
composition of Barangay Santo Rosario which was cited as one of the Sitio of
Barangay San Francisco by that time. It was the aspiration of the people of
Barangay Santo Rosario that relent an opportunity to build their own society to
measure the competency on their gallantry.

The naming of Barangay Santo Rosario was started when there was a certain
religious person named Mr. Pedro Dizon who donated a Patron Saint name Santo
Rosario by the people of Mawaque were terrified by the war, the rationalization why
they migrated in Barangay Santo Rosario. When Mr. Pedro Dizon passed away all
his belongings were left to her daughter who lived in Barangay Santo Rosario name
Mrs. Juanita Dizon who decided later on about the naming of the said barangay
under the name of the Patron Saint Santo Rosario.

In the last Barangay Elections, Mr. Jomer G. Ong was elected again as
Barangay Captain together with the seven Kagawad. While in SK Officials, Joshua
Paolo Dizon was elected as SK Chairman. With the help of our barangay and SK
officials and also with our participation as constituents we will be able to improve our
community and we’ll be able to resolve the problems in our barangay in the near
future.

II. Problems

Barangay Santo Rosario are facing some problems which are solid waste
management, health or undernourished and over nourished children, peace and
order, violence against women and children, uelderly and differently able service
assistance. According to our barangay secretary among those problems, solid waste
management requires the most attention. This concerns about the everyday waste
of household within the barangay. If problem about solid waste management is not
resolved immediately it may lead to other existence of major health problems.

III. Results and Discussion

Some problems in Barangay Santo Rosario has not been completely resolved
as of now. Barangay officials are currently taking steps to solve those problems
especially the concern about the solid waste management. The barangay officials
were able to contain this major problem through proper planning and management
on this aspect. There are still some lapses once in a while, though constituent were
aware and given information on what to do on their day to day waste to avoid other
existence of major health problems. As of now, they are planning to provide three
trash bin in each street in our barangay which consist of biodegradable, non-
biodegradable and recyclable.

IV. Recommendation

As a student and as a part of our community, I thought of a possible actions

or solution to resolve the problems in our barangay. I recommend to the constituents
or residents in the barangay that they need to strictly comply on the ordinances
issued by the barangay council such as anti-littering law, segregation scheme and
also they need to decompose instead of burning their waste which is also illegal
under the law. To the barangay officials, I recommend that they need to properly
monitor the implementation on rules regarding solid waste management.

The following are the methods that will use to present the results:

 PowerPoint Presentation
– to effectively present and share our research in an organized and well-
mannered presentation by adding such pictures to catch the attention of the
viewers.

 Video Presentation
– we are advised by our professor to do a video presentation about our service
learning project to better understanding about the problem in the barangay.

 Social Media
– this project can also be seen by the residents of our barangay by posting it in
our Barangay’s Facebook Page.\

Integration of Big History Concepts in the Service Learning:

There is always a beginning in helping the barangay, it is how the Big Bang
Theory is connected in this kind of Service Learning Plan. This project is also
expandable because we are giving ideas concerning with the problem of the
barangay. Just like the Big Bang, if we will move and do an action, we can make an
impact from nothing to something in our barangays. The Big Bang was created
because there’s a driving force behind that pushed it to happen and something begins
to appear. We, as a student we should take steps, be a role model, and motivate the
residents to love our community by being responsible enough about our doings. Allow
this compassion to overtake us and be the driving force for us to do the “big bang” or
should I say do something in our barangay. Through this Service Learning Project, I
was able to know some issues in our barangay and also the history of it.

Reflection:

The BH Service Learning Project serves as our way to be able to know the
happenings and problems that out barangay is facing. We, as a students were given
an opportunity to speak out our concerns about this matter and through this project
we will able to find solutions that we need to accomplish in order for us to solve the
problems in our barangay. Through the help of service learning project, I, as a student
and also as a part of our community my eyes wide-opened and also I became aware
about the things that I do because I realized that through our simple wrong doings it
can cause a major problem in our society. As a citizen, we should follow the
implemented laws in our barangays. Let us help our own barangay in our little ways.

Through BH Service Learning Project, I was able to interview our barangay

secretary and asked some questions that concerns our community. I was able to know
the problems in our barangay and aside from that I also gathered some information
about the programs and ordinances that our barangay officials will implement.
According to our barangay secretary, barangay officials are currently taking steps to
solve the said problems, they are implementing strict compliance on the ordinance
and resolution issued by the barangay council, proper monitoring and maintenance
on the environmental projects, programs and activities, information dissemination on
the advantage and disadvantage on negligence of environmental issues and also they
have budgetary allotment on barangay’s environmental needs. After experiencing this
service learning, I just want to remind everyone that we should be responsible enough
in our actions and we should know our responsibilities as a citizen. As a resident of
barangay Santo Rosario, we should contribute in our community by simply abiding the
laws that were and will implement by our barangay officials. And to our barangay
officials, they should properly monitor the implementation on rules. Lastly, all of us, as
part of our barangay we should have unity so that we will be able to conquer the
problems in our barangay. The beginning starts with us and we should take an action
before it’s too late.

BH Service Learning Project
This interview is made to you to undertake a research for the partial fulfilment of the
Service Learning Plan. The interview will take a few minutes and the answers will be
completely confidential and strictly for academic purpose. Thus, please answer the
questions honestly and as truthfully as you can.

1. Cite some problems in our barangay.

2. Among those problems, which require the most attention?

Solid Waste Management – this concerns about the everyday waste of household
within the barangay. However, the brgy official was able to contain this major
problem thru proper planning and management on this project. There are still some
lapses once in a while though constituents are aware and given information on what
to do on their day to day waste to avoid other existence of major health problems.

3. What are possible solutions or what can we do to resolve it?

 Constituents need to strictly comply on the ordinances issued by the barangay
council such as anti-littering law, segregation scheme and also they need to
decompose instead of burning their waste which is also illegal under RA 9003.
 Brgy council needs to properly monitor the implementation on rules regarding
solid waste management.
