PROVIDENCIA

The Island of Providencia, also known as Old Providence, is a 22 km² Caribbean Sea island that
belongs to the Colombian department of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina. Next to the
island of Santa Catalina and some surrounding island territories make up the municipality of
Providencia and Santa Catalina Islands.

FESTIVIDADES:

The Green Moon Festival: is a celebration that makes visible a way of being and celebrating that is
typical of Afro-Caribbean people. Despite its recent origins, the festival has characteristics that tell
the story of these islands. The complete disappearance of the indigenous presence, as well as the
colonization by the English who introduced Africans to work in large plantations, are manifested
today in the Sanandresan culture.

Crab Festival: The Crab Festival is held every year on the first of January. On that day, residents of
the island of San Andrés and visitors can taste different dishes prepared from this crustacean. Also,
during the event you can enjoy music and dances from the region.

20 de Julio, celebration of the independence of Colombia: On this day the youth take over the
streets through the schools and educational institutions of the region to celebrate with dances,
music and much color the independence of their nation.

El Reinado del Coco The 30th of November of each year commemorates the day of San Andrés,
who is the patron saint of the region that makes up the island of San Andrés y Providencia. The
celebration usually lasts three days, during which the regional government organizes activities to
enjoy the cuisine of the region, based all on recipes that have to do with coconut.

COMIDAS TIPICAS

1- Rondon or Run down:


It is the typical dish of the region par excellence. It is a kind of stew or soup that is cooked
in a base of coconut milk. To this base are added fish, snails, yams, cassava, green banana,
pork tail and flour tortillas, and seasoned with different spices.

2- Crab soup It is a delicacy for the exotic of its ingredients. It is also considered a powerful
aphrodisiac. It is prepared with black and red crabs, which are cooked with pork tail,
potato, yams, flour tortillas and spices.

3- Balls or dumplings of crab or fish It is a highly prized dish in the region. It is prepared with
fish meat, crab or lobster. It is seasoned with eggs, breadcrumbs, different vegetables and
spices. Then the small balls are made and fried in very hot oil.

4- Pumpkin cake or auyama, corn and banana Pumpkin, corn and banana are very popular in
the region; they are consumed in all kinds of sweet or salty meals. They’re widely used in
desserts, especially in cakes. To make the pumpkin, corn and banana cake is made a puree
to which sugar, butter, flour, eggs, white cheese, among other ingredients, is added and
baked. It is very common to sell these products in the streets and beaches of the region.
TRAJES TIPICOS
Women:The Insular Region’s most popular dress for women consists of a white blouse
with long sleeves and a high collar, paired with a long skirt that usually reaches the height
of the ankles. In addition, accessories such as a headscarf of some vivid colour are often
added to this suit.
Man: As for the men’s suit, this one is also mainly composed of an almost always white
shirt. The trousers are usually grey, although they can also be seen in cream, or even
black, always combined with black shoes.
