Until the time of Ashoka, Buddhism was no better than a local sect confined to
Magadha and the neighbouring regions. The reasons for the rapid spread of Buddhism
were manifold; firstly, the royal patronage, which it thus received was continued by
some of the greatest kings of ancient India and this largely accounts for its success.
Secondly, Buddhism adopted itself to the needs of the foreigners and so it spread to
foreign lands like Central Asia, West Asia and Sri Lanka. Thirdly, Buddha organised the
Sangha or the religious order whose doors were kept open to everybody irrespective of
caste and gender. Fourthly, the use of Pali, the language of the people, also contributed
to the spread of Buddhism.

Myanmar, previously known as Burma, gained freedom from colonial rule in 1948 and
became a democracy. But the democratic rule ended in 1962 with a military coup. In
1990, elections were held for the first time after almost 30 years. The National League
for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi (pronounced Soo-chi), won the election. But
the military leaders of Myanmar refused to step down and did not recognize the
election results. Instead, the military put the elected pro-democracy leaders, including
Suu Kyi, under house-arrest. Political activists accused of even the most trivial offences
had been jailed. Anyone caught publicly airing views or issuing statements critical of
the regime was sentenced up to twenty years in prison. Due to the coercive policies of
the military-ruled government in Myanmar, about 6 to 10 lakh people were uprooted
from their homes and had to take shelter elsewhere. Despite being under house arrest,
Suu Kyi continued to campaign for democracy. Her struggle has won international
recognition. She has also been awarded the Nobel peace Prize. Yet the people in
Myanmar are still struggling to establish a democratic government in their country.

Journalism means several things. First of all, it means the ability to write and convey
thoughts in a way that people understand quickly. It means being able to turn long
articles into shape. It means knowing your grammar and composition rules inside out
and upside down. It also means a nose for news and feel for words, respect for truth
and a sense of mission. A journalist should be able to size up a situation on the spot. He
should also develop a deep insight into human conditions. Nobody can teach you the
finer aspects of journalism. No plastic surgeon can give you a nose for news. No teacher
can give you a feel for words.
(a) All the rules of writing (d) The insight into human
(b) The news conditions
(c) Grammar and composition
