the all Site works.

 Site Supervisor: To co-ordinate with Site Engineer, supervise the site works and

ensure quality and safety procedures are implemented as required.

 Pipe Fitter: To lay the pipes and fittings properly as per specification.

 Skilled labour: For pipe wrapping, sleeving, wrapping the joints with molding

compound as per specification.

 Labour: to perform manual excavation when necessary assist while machine

excavation and follow safety procedures required.

3. Preparation of work
3.1 Preliminary study and work
• Understand the work area by using the key plan
• Study the longitudinal section flat plan according to the hydraulic profile.
• Joint inspection along the pipe line traces which will be laid with officers of NWS&DB
and the relevant road authority (RDA, PRDA, Pradeshiya Saba etc) and getting
permission from the relevant authority.
• Inspection of existing Telephone, Electricity, Water and any other line under the
proposed pipe trace.
• A survey will be carried out along the proposed pipe trace including the culvert inverts
and TBM transferring and compared with the given LS drawings.
• The change of the pipe line will be marked along the road and identify obstacles
and permanent features to the proposed trace.

4
3.2 Sign Boards and Safety Action

• Safety cones, Information board, barricades, warning signals will be placed along
the excavation area provide two flagmen beside the construction area to control the
traffic whenever necessary.
• If the excavation trench crosses the footpath, which made of strong plate will be
placed crossing over the trench.
• In the event of road closure, prior understanding will be taken from relevant authority such
as local police station and road maintenance authority.
• Appropriate lights are provided for open excavations at night time.

4. Project Execution

4.1 Excavation
The excavation would be carried out using backhoe machines, mini-excavator or by manually depending
on the condition of the road. If the soil condition is weak (ground is not so solid) in side of the trench
should be protected using shoring plates and jacks until the pipe laying. If the water table is high, dewater
the trench area until the pipe laying by using the pumps. The excavated soil would be unloaded inside the
road as a bund & it may use later for back fi1ling. After the trench excavation is finished to the required
depth, the bed of the trench would be leveled and prepared for laying of the pipes, considering the ground
condition.

Therefore a maximum depth of excavation of 3.5 m is proposed as per the guide lines of UNDP.

Trial Pits shall be excavated to such depths as necessary to determine and confirm the alignment of the
trench. The excavation shall be carried out using backhoe machines excavator/by manually but depending
on the type of the pipe, ground condition and depth of the excavation. The excavation in vehicle movable
road shall be done using backhoe and excavator. Usually open excavation shall be done with braced cut.
The excavated soil suitable for back-filling shall be stock piled in the site/separate locations as required.
Any unsuitable excavated shall be legally disposed.

Given the instability of the sand/soil conditions, trench shoring will be used to maintain the vertical
integrity of the sidewalls. The excavation shall be kept free from water during the time of the
construction and pipe installation by installing and operating all necessary machinery, appliances and
equipment. All water removed during excavation for trenching and construction will be disposed of
inland from the excavation for re-percolation back into the water table as outlined in the UNDP
guidelines. Surface run off shall be controlled so as to prevent entry/collection of water on excavation.

5
4.2 Rock Excavation
Weathered rocks shall be removed by mechanical means as far as possible. Hard rock shall be removed
by other means as agreed with the Engineer/reroute the pipeline trace. Only controlled blasting shall be
permitted with adequate controlling/protection measures on excessive firing blast, fume, blowing muck
and propagating vibratory waves to minimize end hazards.

4.3 Trench Dimensions

Minimum depth of trench shall be decided in accordance with the construction drawing efficient working
requirement, ground stability and number and size of pipe to be laid in the trench. 100mm clearance to
the sides of the trench from the outer surface of the pipe shall be maintained at every trenching work.
Minimum width of the trench shall be maintained as 300mm unless otherwise authorized by the
Engineer. The clear cover to the crown of the pipe shall be 600 mm as required. The trench depth shall be
decided considering pipe diameter and ground condition.

4.4 Dewatering
All the time pumping equipment and machinery to be kept in good working conditions for all
emergencies. The static water level can be drawn down by using pumps. Prior commencing pipe laying, it
is essential to dewater the trench formation. Pumping well points (0.5x0.5x0.5 m) at every 20m intervals
will be provided as below (Figure 02).Surface runoff will be controlled so as to prevent entry or
collection of water on excavation. In waterlogged ground, steel or timber sheet support system should be
used. Backfilling should proceed while the support system is removed. If the area is marshy, the sludge
pumps can be use.

6
4.5 Pipe Laying
Pipe laying between two adjacent manholes/chainages shall be started from the lower elevation to higher
elevation for easy draining of ground water in the trench. However there can be case where need to lay
pipes in opposite direction also.

 All pipes shall be checked for defects and cleaned before joining
 All pipes shall be laid to lines and grades shown on the drawings
 Pipes shall be lowered by using a proper lifting mechanism which is approved by the Engineer
 Pipes shall be bonded to even gradient
 Open ends of the installed pipes shall be plugged with a watertight plug/other approved way when
there is no pipe laying in progress
 When the pipes are to be ready for joining the plug shall be taken off
 Pipe ends shall be well cleaned
 Material used for plugging shall be approved type that shall adequately protect the pipe from
damage, prevent dirt, debris and water from entering the pipe
 Proper machineries shall be used for the cutting pipes and the edge of the cut shall be clean, true and
square.

4.6 Pipe Bedding

Before placing the bedding material the excavated surface shall be properly leveled and trimmed.
Boulders, loose particles and other impurities shall be removed. Pipe bedding shall be placed as per
construction drawing with materials complying with the requirements. Water level in the trench shall be
kept to a minimum while placing the bedding material. Bedding shall be levelled and compacted to
achieve the required level of compaction. Required bedding angle shall be provided by using hand tools.

4.7 Protection of Pipes

Pre-cast concrete marker posts shall be placed along the pipe traces especially at turning points, special
nodal points, branch off, etc. Similar arrangement shall be made for each valve chamber and where it is
not possible having marker posts, marker plate shall be introduced. Marker Tape shall be installed in the
trench, 300mm above the crest of the pipe.

7
4.8 Pressure Testing and Disinfection
All pipes will be hydrostatically tested according to the approved method. All tests will be conducted on
the pipe lines in sections after the trench is backfilled, buy before pavement construction. All pipe lines
will be thoroughly checked for foreign matters before testing all wash out valves hydrants will be closed
when the pipe line is ready for testing. The pipe line will be slowly filled by water, allowing all air
pockets to be released, until the pipe is completely filled and under working pressure at which condition
it should be allowed to stand for 24 hours, any apparent defects in the pipeline will be noted and rectified.
For this purpose pressure pump and standard equipment will be used with the coordination of the
engineer.

After successful completion of pressure testing of raw water distribution pipes, sterilizing process will be
commenced. The water used for pipeline testing and disinfecting operations will be disposed without
causing any damage to adjacent property.

Pressure testing method statement for Upvc Pipes.

1. The length of the pressure testing will be selected according to the laying schedule but
maximum length for the pressure testing would be not exceeding 1km.
2. Water from the external water scheme will be used for the pressure testing.
3. The pipeline shall be prepared for testing by closing all valves and hydrants: placing
substantial stops and bulkheads at openings.
4. The pipeline shall be slowly filled with water, allowing all air pockets to be released,
until the pipe is completely filled and under working pressure at (4bar) which condition it
should be allowed to stand for 24 hours and tested.
5. Pressure gauge placed at lowest point of the pie lines.
6. Then pipeline shall be pressurized for test pressure not less than 1.5 x the maximum
working pressure (6bars). The duration of the pressure test shall be for two hours.
7. Any defective will be repaired and test repeated to ensure the pressure capacity.

LEAKAGE TEST
 After completion of hydrostatic pressure test, leakage test will be carried out.
 The duration of the test would be 2hour and the line should be pressurized to 1.5 x
working pressure. (6bar)
 The pipe leakage shall be taken as the amount of water, as measured by the measuring
device, needed to be injected into the maintain the test pressure for the 2hour leakage.

8
 Maximum allowable leakage will be calculated using following formula.

X 24 ≤ 2.3

Q: Amount of leakage in litters.

D: Diameter of pipeline in millimeters.
L: Length of pipeline in kilometers.
H: Duration of leakage test in hours.
T: Test pressure in bars.

 If the leakage satisfies this equation the pipe segment is pass for the pressure test.
 If fails, test should be repeated.

4.9 Back-filling and Compaction

Back-filling and compaction shall be done layer by layer. The thickness of the back filling layers shall be
as per the specification. Compaction shall be done using a suitable capacity Roller Compactor/Vibrator
and excessive/unsuitable material shall be removed from the site. Under the wet conditions, approved
material shall be used to obtain require compaction. Back-fill shall be done up to level of required dry
density according to the site conditions and specifications.
