Early days:
1. Born in 1942 in Ootacamund, in the Nilagiri Hills of South India.
2. Educated in the Lawrence School, Lovedale, one of the best schools in India, which was
run on military and British Public School lines (like Eton & Harrow).
Achievements include:
1. Extra Masters Certificate granted by the UK in 1970.
2. About 10 years at sea including Command of merchant ships,
3. Over 45 years in full time maritime training including 12 years as head of very large
training institutions of the Govt of India – TS Rajendra, TS Chanakya & LBS College.
4. Leader of the Indian delegation to United Nations (IMO) on two occasions.
5. External Examiner of Masters & Mates for over 30 years and still continues as such
6. Chief Examiner of Extra Masters of India.
7. Nautical Assessor in an international ship collision case.
8. Author of eight textbooks on a variety of subjects, on the operation of merchant ships.
9. Master (Chairman) of the Company of Master Mariners of India.
10. Chairman of the Nautical Institute India (West) Branch.
11. ‘Principal Emeritus’ of LBS College of Advanced maritime Studies & Research.
12. Sailed in Command of a general cargo ship to UK continent & back after retirement from
Govt Service to prove to himself that is a practising Master not merely a teaching Master!
13. Retired as General Manager, Training, Eurasia Group (now called the Bernard Schulte
Shipmanagement Group) Mumbai after 3½ years.
14. Now ‘Marine Examinations Consultant’ with Marshall Islands Ship Registry.

Prominent awards received by him


1. ‘Man of the year Award’ in 2001 by Sailor Today magazine for ‘His conception and
implementation of the Indian National Database of Seafarers (INDos)’.
2. ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2002 by Marine World magazine.
3. ‘Literary Distinction Award’ by Marex Bulletin in 2006.
4. ‘Lifetime Contribution to Maritime Training Award’ by Global Met in 2007.
5. ‘Individual Innovation Award 2007’ by Sailor Today Magazine for the manner in which
he conducted India’s first Maritime Quiz for Seafarers.
6. ‘Outstanding Contribution to Maritime Education & Training Award’ by the Govt. of
India on National Maritime Day, 5th April 2013.
7. ‘Outstanding contribution & Yeoman Service to the Maritime Industry Award’ by
FOSMA (Foreign Owners Representatives & Ship Managers Association) in 2014.
