Synopsis: The Aegean we knew and loved, with its pristine beaches, barren landscapes and
traditional villages perched on hilltops, is fast disappearing. The rapid, anarchic building of
recent years has trampled on the natural environment and is changing its distinctive character.
Through the use of archival material, this film traces the historical and social roots of today's
developments in the Aegean, including recent wars, emigration and the rise of the shipping
industry. The views of archaeologists and planners are interwoven with the debate among the
islanders themselves. Emphasizing the importance of nature in our lives and the value of the
Aegean's primeval beauty, the film also suggests creative ideas to achieve a more sustainable
prosperity.

Synopsis: There is a strange kind of silence in the forests of Guam. Of the twelve native species of
bird which once populated the forests of the southernmost Mariana Island, only three remain. As
for most of the endemic reptiles, they are now rarely to be found. The Brown Tree Snake "boiga
irregularis" is responsible. This pretty, moderately poisonous snake was inadvertently transported
onto this Pacific island fifty years ago by American troops, hidden between military material, from
its homeland Papua New Guinea. From a snake’s point of view Guam was at that time a paradise:
flightless birds, free from other food competitors, no natural enemies and animals for the taking in
abundance that didn’t even recognise a snake as a mortal enemy.Although the Brown Tree Snake
spread unhindered and quite quickly over the entire island and American military personnel by the
mid-fifties had became aware of its presence, the real extent of the problem was only recognised
forty years later. By then it was too late to prevent an ecological disaster...

Synopsis: The Llanrhidian Marsh is one of the largest areas of saltmarsh in the world.
It is a natural habitat, both sea and land at the same time, shaped by the constant change of
tides, and is protected as a world natural heritage site by UNESCO as well as being a
designated site of special scientific interest. Only a few animals selected by man and nature
have been able to adapt to these rough conditions. Over the centuries they have taken on
special characteristics necessary for survival and have passed them on to their descendants.
More than 250 horses and several thousand sheep still live freely here, on the Gower
peninsular, in west Wales. In the autumn the "cocklers" of Pen Clawdd arrive to collect the
desired shells of the area. This work has helped to support them since the collapse of the coal
industry.

Synopsis: Finnish cameraman Kari Kemppainen has been filming large predators in Eastern Finland
for some fifteen years. Bears, wolves, wolverine and lynx have long been persecuted here, but all
have made a major comeback in recent years as Kari has tirelessly documented. His remarkable wild
footage of bears fighting and mating, of wolverine family life and of the return of wolves to Finland
from Russia has shed much new light on these powerful but shy creatures. Predators' Paradise follows
Kari at work as he spends up to 200 days a year in the Kuhmo wilderness, sleeping overnight in his
filming hides to capture twilight activities of predators and the reindeer and elk they hunt. The
resurgence of large carnivores in Finland, especially wolves, has created tensions with hunters and
with people living in remote forests, but there are signs that predators are increasingly being accepted
today after centuries of distrust.

help of experts across Finland and Estonia. These enthusiastic, but sometimes eccentric "bat-hunters"
allow Benjam to see Europe's these shadowy night fliers in a new, more positive light.

houses. Filming bats proves challenging, uncomfortable, but ultimately truly revelatory.
Benjam discovers that bats still use tree-holes in summer, but since many of Europe's old forests have
been felled, they've also learnt to share people's homes. Many are unaware that bats live so close to
them!. Those who get to know bats better, soon realise they are nothing like the scary creatures of
legend and should be cherished, not cringed at!

charmer, who magnetizes the look, a tool of introspection, which reveals countless emotions,
ancient thoughts…Thus, here, the involuntary escape is realized and the traveler finds a land

Synopsis: The documentary movie PANTA REI (old Greek proverb from Heraclitus
"Everything flows") is about “birth and death” of seasons in the eyes of the children.
Ibrahim and Amra Hrustic are playing carelessly in their settlement in different seasons.
They are picking the flowers, looking their dearest trees, going on the same path.
While they are looking at coming of the spring, summer, autumn and winter, they are
admiring to them. But, when the season underwent, they feel sadness. The honeybees and
butterflies are flying in front of their eyes, the grass is being mowed, the jam is being made,
and last leaflet is falling from the bough. When the winter comes they are playing on the snow
and making the snowman. But suddenly they realize that their favourite tree is being cut, the
snowman is being dissolved; that imagination is far away from the reality and new spring is
being hinted. There is no speech in film so greater illusion would be created utilising picture
and sounds.

(Blenio Valley in the Southern part of Switzerland) , leads his cattle on to the mountain
pasture. We are in the Greina Alps, a vast plateau (7 200 feet) which unites Tichino and

wood-fired cauldron, in the traditional way. These mountain heartlands have been forced to
“modernize to European standards”. During the winter months, we return to the Motterascio
pasture via helicopter to find it cloaked in white, glacier-like. Later we accompany Giovanni
Boggini in to the white interior of the new laboratory. Resplendent with shiny tiles and
glittering instruments, it resembles a high-tech pharmaceutical plant. The incredulous dairy
man reluctantly accepts the sterilised car and other similar constrictions…

Following the exciting journey of the butterflies all the way from northern Europe all the way

again underline the vulnerability, power and humour of the images.

and crying faces fill the front pages. The worst ecological disaster happened what ever stroked
European soils, killing Hungary’s beautiful river Tisza. But what became of the river that the

‘Cyanide Blues’ follows the lives of the people and the plight of nature after the disaster.
Finally it’s a positive story about a river that refused to die and people who refused to accept
defeat: The ecosystem fights back and so do people.

Synopsis: There has been a long term misunderstanding between mankind and sharks. This
misunderstanding has lead to unscrupulous hostility and unbridled fear. For most people it is
unthinkable that this insensitive killing machine can have a different facet and that under
certain circumstances it is really possible to swim in harmony with this apex predator, if you
understand its body language. “Beyond Fear” wants to lobby for a better image for sharks to
show that, especially the great white sharks, are top predators which have a very important
role in the ecological balance of our oceans and that are unfortunately endangered.

Synopsis: People visiting the Islands of the Baltic Sea drop normally only into the most important
tourist resorts. The originality of the culture, the edges of the everyday life and the beauty of the nature
don’t open up to the short-time visitors. The islands of our home sea have stayed pretty much
unknown, even for most of us who live in the countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. The Pearls of the
Baltic Sea is a documentary in six parts, a story about a sailing trip, during which the islands Kotlin,
Åland, Saaremaa, Gotland, Bornholm and Hailuoto - the Pearls of the Baltic Sea are rediscovered.
At the same time it is a strong expression of opinion for the survival of the nature of our home sea and
also the people’s habits, the culture of the archipelago.
In the first film of the series we are in Åland and we are eye to eye with a white tailed eagle and a grey
seal, we are enraptured by orchids, and delve in to the world of perch, flounder the great crested newt
and stickleback. A naturalist who tags eagles and a family living on the island are also featured.

Synopsis: Nothing has had a stronger and more lasting influence on European ideology than
ancient Greek mythology. The aura surrounding magnificent temples and other sites of
worship is charged with tales blending epic poetry with religion, literature and historical
events. Without a doubt, the writers of these tales drew their inspiration from the abundant
nature of Greece; for the flora and fauna of Greece ranks among the most diverse in Europe.
This unconventional documentary moves to and fro between the world of ideas and natural
facts. Schlamberger combines the magnificent visual imagery of the nature film with a
journey into the world of ancient Greek ideology, inviting us on an entertaining stroll through
the “Garden of the Gods”.

Synopsis: Some of the richest forests in the world cover the ridges and valleys of the southern
Appalachians. This film explores the hidden worlds of these remote valleys, and uncovers a
wealth of nature, from bears and salamanders to vultures and flying squirrels. But human
culture here is as rich as the natural history. These mountains were the heartland of the
Cherokee Nation, and the film producers worked with Cherokee living there today to re-create
their view of the forest world. Later, settlers from Germany, Scotland and Ireland in particular
helped create the distinctive culture of modern Appalachia, and to evoke all these elements
the film is set to a unique score, especially composed, which combines traditional music from
all these cultures.

Synopsis: The Gesäuse – the “Roaring Mountains” – a wild, mountainous region of the Alps,
a dramatic landscape of sheer, vertical rock faces, raging torrents of water and dark, secretive
forest. Nowhere else in the Alps are rock, forest and river arranged in such a steep vertical
alignment. The sound of the thundering water against the naked rock gives the area its name,
the roar of the mountains echoing around the imposing peaks. Generations of mountaineers
have tried to conquer these mountains, often paying with their lives, but they weren’t the first.
One hundred and fifty years ago, the monks of the Benedictine monastery of Admont reached
the summits. They were exploring, studying and cataloguing the flora and fauna of the region,
and fearless as they set out on their expeditions – “scientists in habits and hobnailed boots”.

Language: English
Length: 7 min
Completion date: June 2006
Synopsis: Mountain Wall is the record of an accidental confrontation with the natural world
around us - a film made for both children and adults. Using a deliberate lo-fi method of
filming. Mountain Wall seeks a rough intimacy between the subject and the viewer. Inspired
by the Chinese poet Cold Mountain, who wrote his poems on rocks and leaves for others to
discover, this film reads the wall of the mountain, trying simply to see what is there and
attempting to tell others what it saw.

150 years after his discovery, many skeletal remains have been found at over 300 sites, but
never an entire skeleton. In the last decade new finds and research methods have drastically
changed our concept of the “ice age man” who dominated Europe around 300,000 years ago.
The image of a dumb, club swinging savage is not actually representative. Quarks & Co
embarks on a search for traces: When, where and how did Neanderthals live? Were they

Synopsis: By taking one of aquatic life’s most maligned and demonised creatures, the longfin
eel, they weave a modern day allegory of man’s relationship with his environment, in the
context of one eel’s 84-year life cycle. From its beginnings in the dark corners of the ocean to
its transition into the river, Longfin follows the eel’s journey, the dangers it faces and its
eventual migration back into the ocean.Viewed as an ancestral figure by the native people of
New Zealand, the eel has evolved from a sustainable food source for this native community,
to a pest, and in recent times, to a valuable commodity in a million-dollar exporting industry.
Now, the future of the longfin eel is uncertain as the rivers are blocked by dams, commercial
fishing pressures rise and progress takes precedence over conservation.

Synopsis: This one hour HD-special is a little wildlife filmmaking sensation: Meet one
of the shyest predators of the Northern hemisphere: the wolverine. It is so elusive that
even hunters rarely come across it. A mission impossible for a wildlife photographer?
Not with a little help from a friend: photographer Antti Leinonen has followed for more
than 18 years wolverines in Finland and has contrived a lot of tricks how to overcome
the cleverness of the big marten. That way the director Oliver Goetzl and the
cameraman Ivo Nörenberg were able to film wild wolverines for the first time and to
create an intimate portrait of the „Hyenas of the North“.

Synopsis: The World Behind is an impressive journey through a diverse country that indeed
has a lot more to offer than hot springs. Every single part of this island is filled with
phenomenal myths. In spite of the hard circumstances that everyday life on the edge of the
habitable world puts on its people, they still have along their down-to-earth mentality a strong
affinity to believe in things that are inexplicable. For these people the existence of elfs is more
than just an old wife’s tale. They believe in a dimension behind the visible world. The film
interweaves integral elements like literature, believe, and landscape, and tries to lift the secret
of the fabulous creatures that call Iceland their homeland.
