Celebration of Life
13 December 2003 / 1 p.m.
Titus Brandsma Center / 24 Acacia Street, Bgy. Mariana, New Manila, Quezon City
NIGHTS OF CABIRIA opens with a woman enjoying the company of her man by the riverside, which is
followed by her being thrown into the river by her beloved. The guy runs off with her handbag and she
nearly drowns but the experience didn't diminish her faith that a "knight in shining armor" would rescue
her from the lonely and pointless life in prostitution. The movie may be melancholic and tragic at times
but it didn't lose its optimism, mainly due to Guiletta Massina (Fellini’s real-life wife) who is described by
some as the female Charlie Chaplin. Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film.

TAMPOPO
1986 - JAP - 110 mins.
TAMPOPO has a premise frequently used in old Hollywood Western flicks: a cargo truck driver and
company decides to help a housewife in opening a noodle shop. They stand by her in every struggle.
It's the vignettes in between scenes that make this Japanese film a gem though, as it touches on
various aspects of life and how food plays a vital role in all of them. The movie both celebrates life and
food, which is a favorite subject of not a few.
