CARE TO THE SENIOR CITIZEN
MAINTENANCE OF SENIOR CITIZEN HOMES: In the morning as the dawn
breaks we offer prayers to the rising sun. The rising sun signifies new hope and
new energy. But has anyone realized that the setting sun has completed its
day's work and it is now on its way below the horizon for a well-earned rest.
Our elderly people are this golden glow of the setting sun. Nearing the end of
their life, they have completed all their duties and now they are looking
forward to their well-deserved rest. Many aged people are living uncared and
unhonoured. Their own family members have neglected them. That is why
GRAM VIKAS PARISHAD has taken this noble initiative to take care of the older
persons. Gram Vikas Parishad is running 4 (Four) numbers of Senior Citizen
Homes at Moirabari (Morigaon District), Kamalabari (Majuli District),
Jamunapar (Sivasagar District) & Rangaloo (Nagaon District) of Assam. At
present more than 100 beneficiaries are staying in 4 Homes. Their own family
members have neglected them. And they do not have any legal guardian to
look after them. So they have come out of their home. We provide them
shelter, nutritious food, cloths, medical care, recreation and other facilities. At
present 3 (three) homes excluding Rangaloo (Nagaon District) has received
financial support from Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of
India.
Major learning of the interns

As an intern, it was our first time in an orphanage and the past few days were
filled with many experiences. Some of them are-

• We got a first hand teaching experience. Teaching them various subjects, it

boosted our vocabulary and self confidence.
• We got to know about the working process of the organizations that works
for the betterment of the homeless kids.
• Through interaction with the kids, we understood their Mental construct,
their nature and their needs.
• A child may have undergone some trauma or abuse during their upbringing,
and thus we learnt to cooperate and socialize and interacting with them with
patience and perseverance.
• Our interaction and communication skills have improved drastically.
Self-evaluation

• Our patience and perseverance was tested as it was the key to our
communication with most of the children.
• Our creativity was also tested during this internship as we had to be
creative and invent new ways to convey our means to the children and also to
random people during our field activities.
• Our cooperation skills as a team was also evaluated as we had to divide
various activities amongst ourselves according to our best individual skills and
capacities but yet work as a team.
• After this internship we realized that we could give back a lot to the
society and specially to the individuals who are deprived of facilities that we
take for granted.
• Learning about such a big institution made us realize that we had a lot to
learn and develop before we ourselves were a part of such a organization.
Skill developed

• Coordination and team work.

• Division of labor amongst ourselves more effectively.
• Taking lead in areas of individual expertise and also following under someone
else's leadership.
• Patience and perseverance.
• Communication and presentation skills.
• Adapting ourselves according to the nature of situations.

Suggestions

1) Organizing different classes specially for children who are lagging behind
specific subjects such as mathematics.
2) Besides formal education organizing special programs for children with
other special interests such as dancing , handicrafts, acting, singing, etc would
help the children in developing at a cultural level and also finding creativity
within themselves.
Observations
• Gramin vikas Parishad is an organizations with many sub institution
focusing on specific problems which are very well-organized which definitely
increases the efficiency at which they carryout various programs. This was
particularly visible to us during the old-aged home awareness camp.
• They are particularly accurate in localizing their programs as during our
participation in the child marriage awareness camp we actually came across
cases involving people who reported child marriage in the very same locality.
• They are very efficient in providing all the necessary provisions for the
children within their care as all the children seemed content and happy under
their supervision.
• The numerous non-residential programs which we were a part of are a
very wide rooted program and we were very surprised at the efficiency of it
functioning.
• Having specialized branches and sub institutions such as under them
definitely intensifies the effectiveness o
