AIM: How is Keq found using initial concentrations?

What
are “RICE” charts? (3/11)
DO NOW:
Write the equilibrium expression (Keq) for the following
reactions:
1) CO(g) + 3H2(g) ↔ CH4(g) + H2O(g)
2) C(s) + H2O(g) ↔ CO(g) + H2(g)
3) NH4NO3(s) ↔ N2O(g) + 2H2O(g)

4) If CO(g) + 3H2(g) ↔ CH4(g) + H2O(g) has a Keq = 12, and

a Q=15, which direction will it shift and why?

RICE chart
• Used to find Keq using initial concentration data
R = reaction.
I = initial amounts.
C = change in amounts due to reaction.
E = equilibrium (amounts of reactants and products
at equilibrium).
• Ex 1) H2(g) + I2(g) ↔ 2HI(g), Keq = 64.0. The initial
concentrations of H2 and I2 are 0.200 M. Find the
equilibrium concentrations of all species.
*Set up RICE chart (see board)*
• Ex 1) H2(g) + I2(g) ↔ 2HI(g), Keq = 64.0. The initial
concentrations of H2 and I2 are 0.200 M. Find the
equilibrium concentrations of all species.
*Set up RICE chart (see board)*
• Ex 2) H2(g) + F2(g) ↔ 2HF(g)
Keq = 1.15 x 102. The initial concentration of
hydrogen gas is 1.000 M and the initial
concentration of fluorine gas is 2.000 M. No HF is
present initially. Find the equilibrium
concentrations of all species.
